Mash-ups

I read an article in some Scientific magazine and they were talking about these mashups or mixups or whatever you call them. It's the stuff that MTV did with Jay Z and Linkin Park. The article was saying a little bit about how you can easily get the software online and play around with this stuff and then make your own mashups. Anyone ever try this?

Any tips on what software to use, how to go about it, etc? It seems like a really cool way to kill time, and I'd like to get into it. Anything you guys know about it would be helpful to me. Thanks

I don't know of any software, but this guy has some pretty cool mash-ups.

Edit:

Q: What software do you use to make these dumb things?

A: I use a simple but effective workhorse program called Cool Edit. It has in fact recently been bought by Adobe and renamed "Audition," but from what I understand it's basically the same. If you want to make mashups, you need two things: an ability to alter music files (pitch-shift, time-stretch, or add echo and effects), and an ability to layer them in a multi-track program of some sort. There are lots of other programs out there that can do this, look around and you might be able to grab something for free. Acid Pro is supposed to be good and I just got it but I don't understand it.

Google search DJBC.

He made the 'Grey Album' mashing up Jay-z's Black album and the Beatles White Album.

He's done a bunch more - and has some pretty interesting mixes.
I enjoy Radiohead+The Roots.

look for freelance hellraiser's mashups, his are pretty much as good as i've ever heard.

stroke of genius (christina aguilera vs. the strokes)
smells like booty (destiny's child vs. nirvana)
and a bunch of others

the problem with making them though is the extraction of vocals, which is generally kind of a pain in the ass.

That was DJ Danger Mouse. I have no idea who DJBC is...
DJBC did "The Beastles", a mash-up of The Beatles and The Beastie Boys.

For a good time, check out his "Tripper Trouble" track. Good, good stuff.
