In the first game they made all those lore about not using normal ammo so instead of just screwing that up they took the first games overheating idea and applied it so it could act like ammo.

Why don't they just have reuseable heatsinks? The point is that the first game had infinite ammo anyway, just have two to switch back and forth, people are used to running out of ammo, but running out of heatsinks and having to pick up heatsinks on the ground just felt weird.

I seem to be missing something... can I not change my class (or gender) in NG+?

I was going to use a male shepard with a different class, but I couldn't seem to find a place to make the modification.

Well that fucking sucks.

(and thanks for answering)

Yeah, at least you get some nice bonuses for starting a brand new character if you already beat the game.

Also for infiltrator, upgrade the sniper or get ability to use assault rifle?

You get credits and resources. I think like 200 or 300 thousand credits and 50 thousand of each resources.

I've already got 100,000+ of every resource but Element Zero, and I have nothing left to upgrade.

THANKS FOR THE BONUS NEW GAME

I tried to use Warp with another Biotic power, but it didn't work. Every time you combine powers, it should bring up the achievement counter. It only worked when I finally started using Throw and Slam. I assume it would work with Throw and Pull too, just not with Warp.

Pull and Warp is a deadly combo once you get both of them up to their tier 4 ability. Group Pull with the super warp explosion can absolutely wreck shop. Husks and varren grouped up die instantly. Actually anything that doesn't have shields/armor is pretty fucked if grouped together.

I got it on normal with pull+charge.

Charge should work like more like Ridick. You can charge and get 1 shotgun blast off, but are then returned to your original spot.

I'm playing an Infiltrator on insanity.
Disruptor Ammo
Cryo Ammo
Tactical Cloak
Incinerate
AI Hacking
Operative
Reave

Tac cloak 2
Incinerate 4(Heavy Incinerate)
Reave 4 (Area Reave)
Operative 4 (I want Agent, but Assassin might be the way I go)

Is that the about right? Disruptor ammo is kind of neat, but I'm probably just going to make Samara get Group Warp ammo. I might even put another point into Tac Cloak considering how much it helps me in arena fights.

Because in reality the game has switched to a finite ammo system. All of this made up nonsense to stay within canon is just that, nonsense.

They wanted an ammo count for ME2. They wanted to build ammo upgrades for weapons. They especially wanted to limit the amount of special ammo you can use so you don't go through the game nuking everything.

Ammo. Yup.

I wouldn't mind if they had finite ammo for the heavy weapons but kept the regular weapons on the overheating system from the first game. I think that would have been the best way to go about it.

So I'm half way through the game with my second character, I feel like I have experienced everything and have my final thoughts.

:]
Game looks awesome, probably the best looking 360-exclusive.

Deep, fully realized world. All the different races and such, makes everything feel believable.

Much improved combat from the first game.

Multi-tiered optional missions. Meaning you'll scan an anomaly on one planet, check it out, find some piece of data that will lead you to another planet and possibly another after that. These have their own mini-plots to them as well.

More interesting characters than ME1. Thane and Mordin in particular.

:|
Minigames. I actually like the minigames themselves, they're just too frequent.

:[
Too much shooting/lack of mission variety. I understand they improved the combat and want to use it as much as possible, but shooter fatigue sets in after a while. 90% of the missions are going from point A to point B, gunning down enemies in the process. There are a few standout missions that don't follow this pattern [Samara loyalty quest], but they are far too infrequent.

Lack of loot. This ties in to the problem above, just not enough diversity in the weapons and armor. There's essentially 5 weapons in the game since all weapons of a certain type feel the same. There's no way to customize Shepard's armor to make him/her look the way you want or play the way you want. Instead they have a linear upgrade system that feels stripped down from what I wanted.

Player movement and cover system still feel clunky. Improved from ME1 but still seriously lacking compared to other games.

----

Overall I enjoyed the game but wanted more RPG, less shooter. 4/5

Ammo. Yup.

Nailed it.

They changed the mechanics of combat and the weaponry itself enough where unlimited ammo could cause serious imbalance issues. Ammo was the clear preventative method to balance this out.

I'm clearly in the extreme minority here, but I love the new ammo system. If I had unlimited ammo with the claymore shotgun, I wouldn't even be having fun anymore. At least now I kinda have to pick my shots.

I actually like how the ammo system made you have to adapt when ammo ran out. As an infiltrator, my weapon of choice was the sniper rifle, but I had to save it for when I really needed it because of how little ammo it held.

Agreed. The ammo thing is dumb. So is the fuel. There's no point to either. Its not enough of an issue to make you strategize their uses, its just enough to make it an annoyance.

fuck the naysayers, ammo is good. in ME1 i would just use the shotgun 98% of the time and the assault rifle the remaining 2%. in me2? i use basically every weapon.

That's kinda how I feel about powers in ME2. There's almost no need to use anything but your favorite power, since they all share the cooldown time.

Yeah that's another reason why it sucks. I liked being a weapon specialist in the first game and having to choose and use my skills to master my weapons. Here I feel like Rambo.

I like this too. I only used pistols in ME1. Now I can use them all(Than a vanguard can use).

I think it's weird how the powers always change spots when I load. The Squad members swap left and right all the time, and now my powers are reversed on the bar (PC version).

That's weird.

Isn't that kind of the point?

Noticed that, too. Quick save and load really does that. Weird is the perfect way to describe it. I adjust to the udpated UI within seconds, but it's still puzzling.

Did you do most of the side quests in Mass Effect 1? They were abysmally repetitive. Mako run across a landscape to the same goddamn space colony/researchfacility/undergroundmine that had the exact same design structure, but different box placement.

I wonder if there's any chance that Bioware will patch the game and make Charge more useful. If they listened to fans to fix the first game's problems maybe they'll do the same for this one (before ME3).

Charge is fine I just hate when it bugs and it does that a lot.

Is this a difficulty issue? I'm on veteran and charge is fantastic when used properly and augmented by the claymore shotgun and melee. I'd imagine it would be a bit more difficult higher up the ladder.

Combining a Charge with a party member's Warp or Overload is incredibly deadly to pretty much any enemy in the game.

Same here.

Level 4 Heavy Charge plus a few quick shots from the assault shotgun can usually take care of most enemies on Veteran. I honestly don't get much enjoyment from playing games like this on the highest difficulties, so the apparent uselessness of Vanguards on Insanity doesn't bother me. I might switch classes for that achievement, but we'll see.

Also, what's the consensus on the best bonus talent for Vanguards? I'm torn between Reave, which might be good for softening up enemies with barriers, and Fortification, for close-quarters combat.

Exactly. I always wonder when I hear people glorifying the first game whether they even bothered to play the side missions. I painstakingly went through each one and it felt like pulling teeth. I honestly look at Mass Effect 1 as 10-15 hours of AAA quality work (the story missions) paired with 10-15 hours of a C-grade title for Xbox 1. The disparity is so bad that it almost feels like two different teams worked on the game.

The main story team focused on:
- interesting environments that focused on the differing architecture of each of the galactic civilizations
- cinematic storytelling through very good cutscenes and dialogue trees

The side mission team focused on quantity over quality:
- cookie cutter planet landscapes
- laughably bad interior structures (the same rooms, with the same red rockwalls, no matter what the outside environment was or what civilization was supposed to inhabit the given planet)
- text box storytelling to conclude each mission (i.e. "Wrex gives the armor a disgusted glance and sighs" - that couldn't have been done in-engine? Get the hell out...)

Think so. I'm sure
I never put a gun to his face or was a jerk to him in ME1
like he mentioned. Somewhat amusing this got glitched since it was one of the first examples they used in interviews to show off how your ME1 choices impact ME2. :lol

Yeah, that's what makes it such a huge oversight. They specifically brought up how that would carry over and then it didn't carry over properly.:lol

Just got this today, maybe about 1,5 hours played so far. This is so awesome, such an epic feeling right from the start. Thank gods they still make great sci-fi games. :D

Started playing Sunday night, so far I've recruited Archangel and Mordin. Just doing the mission now to recruit Zero.

This game is awesome. That is all. :D
