UK voting system seems pretty archaic. All these people sitting around in tables counting written ballots by hand.

Unless we become so impatient that we need every result in minutes instead of hours, there's no real reason to change. Paper is nice and accountable, cheap, and doesn't crash. Plus I can't spoil a computer ballot.

Indeed, the concept of a democracy is lost on some.

Flawed democracy

Shit non-representative electoral system.
Food banks through the roof.
Wider gulf of inequality than ever before.
A huge part of the nation voting for anti Westminster parties and liberal leaning parties.

Of course people are going to be pissed off.

I know people who are, it isn't fun in any economic climate. Hating on the party in power is always going to be the thing to do though.

As I said the tories are far from perfect, but I trust them with the economy over the other parties - the shiniest turd if you will.

My main issue with the complaints is the lack of eloquence behind them, people need to take step back, calm down, and think about what they're saying.

You really shouldn't trust the Tories with the economy. I'd say they don't have a clue what they're doing, but that's a gigantic lie, because they know exactly what they're doing. They're making shit up and claiming austerity is the way to go because they know that the common person doesn't know fucking anything about economics and will vote because it makes sense. They said they'd cut the deficit. They've barely made a scratch after five years of decimating the civil service. My mom will be out of a job next year if they get back in and she's worked the civil service all of her life, and she's supporting me and my sister on her own because all these "Jobs" the Tories keep talking about people having are zero hours contracts that barely cover the cost of food.

They can go fuck themselves.

Cannot wait for the EU referendum now. Decision making would be incredibly facilitated without the UK.
Am I naive in wanting a referendum just because I expect the UK to want to stay in? Hopefully to put it to bed for good, so that UKIP can fuck off.

Well, I suppose the night can only get better.

If the tories do better than this then I will watch Cbeebies for the next 5 years.

I don't get this mentality. If a large proportion want Conservative government then why is that wrong. Why is it a failure just because your party of choice hasn't won?

If in a true democracy, then yes the mentality is wrong.

But this is FPTP and it is frankly absurd.

Wish I didn't have work tomorrow and could stay up and watch this. It's crazy these poll differences.

Surely this seeming obsession with rushing to count the votes is more than likely to mean more mistakes are made when making the count?

The margin is very rarely under ~2500 votes so they'd have to be really cocking up to make a difference.

Really late posting this but damn, that exit poll. Would be huge, but I can't help but think there's a huge margin of error. Seems way too unexpected and unprecedented to be true.

EDIT: Has anyone got exit poll and actual result numbers for 2010? Wondering how accurate it was.

You're a big guy.
Guy is using he same exit polls structure as before... But I think the election this year is very different and highly regionalised.

I think the difference between the opinion and the exit polls might suggest the right-wing press had some influence (plus threatening emails from letting agents and the like). If fear mongering, misinformation and awkward photos got people to vote against their own interests, that's not great democracy. If huge campaign donation and smear ads decide it.

Spending six months volunteering in a CAB and frequently dealing with the DWP on behalf of poor/vulnerable clients soured me for good on the relentless "chop benefits down" agenda to which I once subscribed. People would get wrongly sanctioned if their only income (e.g. they told the DWP in advance, but they decide not to take that into account, so they get their benefits docked for two weeks) and leave in tears, especially if responsible for children. Many (though not all) of the DWP and Jobcentre staff I had to negotiate with were insensitive and cheeky.

I found the most cynical benefit claimants are the least likely to fall foul of benefits clampdowns (they're usually literate, speak and read/write good English, are very assertive etc.) while shy dependents, often claiming only one benefit, don't stick up for themselves. They're the most likely to hold back information ahead of PIP and ESA assessments or "massage" it down while more cynical claimants will exaggerate and act like their problems are huge when they're manageable.

This isn't to say I'm for ever-increasing government subventions as a long term solution to the nation's problems, but I'm convinced that saving a few per cent off the DWP's bill by taking money off the unemployed and disabled is not going to do anything other than inflict harm on blameless and often humble, people. If the Tories go ahead with a £12bn reduction in the DWP bill, and don't touch pensions, there will be hundreds of truly desperate stories over the next government.
