As somebody that lives in a rural town made up largely of second homes, with very few job opportunities and a child on the way, this is not good news.

I think you're being slightly too pessimistic. I definitely don't think that's an impossible description. But yes, the UK left has taken a massive blow tonight, absolutely massive.

i see paying for GP visits by 2020, NHS dismantled/privatised by 2030

causing the biggest economic recession since 1929 didn't stop this toxic economic dogma; i don't see what else can now

Accept that the current democratic consensus is against you, and be willing to moderate your views in return for getting a relatively better government and/or the chance of electoral reform? Best you can do for the time being.

I'm closing my eyes to the trainwreck and getting some sleep while Labour are still technically leading. I hope it'll remain the same when I wake up, but I'm not hopeful. Not hopeful at all.

The morning brings a new Britain, ladies and gentlemen. Here's hoping it's a better one.

Clegg has arrived at his count. Here we go!

Wanting to keep the NHS is an extremist position now?

the left has accepted moderated views and relatively better governments since 1997 and it's just handed them the most disastrous loss in a generation. 'vote for centre left and hope it gets better!' has failed as a plan and the result is that the country is now beyond the point of recovery.

Almost feel sorry for Nick Clegg having to make a public appearance under these circumstances...almost.

Will be some nice salt in the wound if he loses his seat

Lynne Featherstone is a genuine loss. Thanks to her we got gay marriage, and having met her personally she comes across as an incredibly passionate and dedicated MP.

No, it got landslide victories in three successive elections. 2010 did not represent a particularly centrist Labour.

Bloody hell, Conservatives kept Hastings (its the constituency next to me). Everyone there was expecting it to turn red, as it is a very poor area for the south coast. Even seeing the results thus far I was still waiting it to go Labour.

Can any one see anything else then a yes to exiting Europe happening? The UKIP votes are crazy high in a lot of places.

Lib Dems are gone. Absolutely gone. If they can't defend Bermondsey, they have essentially nothing. This is absolute destruction on an unbelievable scale, we're watching the death of a political party in real time.

As a student of history.. what a time to be alive.

But really, wow. An absolute Lib Dem massacre.

In hindsight, the surprising thing is that we're surprised. They didn't differentiate themselves for 4 and half years so Lib Dem voters who were happy just seem to have moved to the Tories.
