MCV: PlayStation on Xbox backwards compatibility

Let's be honest, it's not uncommon that we see stuff like this from execs post-competitor doing something they're not, like Phil's VR statement, etc.

If PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility comes to PS4, we'll see a different tune from Sony.

The reality of "suits saying that they don't need to do what the competition does" is mostly toe-ing the company line, by and large. This definitely feels like one of those times.

It's a shame because I really would take advantage of it to play through countless PS3 games I've got from PS+.

I have a PS3 still, but I don't have room on my entertainment center to plug it in, the library management (download and install times) is and always has been atrocious, and I won't be paying to play on psnow for something I already have a license for.

On the flip side, I've already started up viva pinata trouble in paradise and battleblock theater on my xbone and they both seems awesome. Looking forward to playing through other GwG games I have that I never played last generation once they get compatibility.

Hell, I'm sure end up buying BC titles during Xbox 360 sales I never would have otherwise because of this.

I couldn't care less for B/C, I bought a new console to play new games. I still have my PS3 which I haven't touched in over a year.

He also adds that - based on their experience - few gamers actually make use of such functionality.

Agreed, bought the fat PS3 with BC day one, but never played a single PS2 game on it. When I buy a new console I´m ready to move on....

I don't know the PS3 to PS4 tech differences enough to really know but it seems hard to replicate Cell and all the SPEs?

Maybe what they can do with PSNow, they can offer you to play the games you already purchased for free?

They said a lot, but in the end it meant nothing.
It seems they basically don't want it on PS4, and thats legitimate to their interests (PS Now).

Good lord if Xbox would of made a statement like this after Sony announced BC this place would of had a field day

I bet doing the same thing for PS4 would be agonizing due to PS3's architecture.

Microsoft doing this is awesome no doubt.

Definitely.

Also, I'm very hopeful about future backwards compatibility now that they are using more straightforward architecture.

If it's a underused feature why have they wasted money making PS Now?
You really don't see the difference? Ps now is really cool and will be improved plus it's a smart thing for Sony to have but it's great of Microsoft to handle BC the way they are. I hope it ends up way more games eventually.

At least Microsoft doesn't charge us for the games we already own :o

For select titles. and ps now is not really about backwards compatibilty, that was a silly dig at the conference, makes no sense. PS now is a future platform, streaming to other devices.

he is right about barely anyone using it, grossly overrated feature, especially limited titles like MS has.

You are in the majority.

I highly doubt that. Id say people who care about this are in the minority.

I would be happy if Sony would just add native support for PS1 and PS2 games. I'm not sure if they're even going to bother with that at this point :/

It's been known since the PS4 launched, the PS3 is just too complex to emulate, you need the actual hardware.

PS1 and PS2 on the other hand would be comparatively easy.
Thats actually what I want
The best games of last gen will likely get Remastered and I still have my PS3 for the ones that don't and the games look great still, PSX/PS2 on the other handare getting old and even on original hardware look horrible on HDTV's.
And eventually they'll be forgotten as original hardware gets harder to get.
Give me PSX/PS2 BC and be happy.

This isn't like the last gen. I have a ton of xbla and PSN titles that are orphaned without BC. Yes I do still play a lot of my arcade titles.
Without BC I will be a LOT more picky choosing which platform I buy digital titles for. Don't support my older purchases? Then they will be the last purchases I make there.... Very simple

“It was quite a complicated announcement and I’m not sure I fully understand it yet. And I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see"

What is so complicated and hard to understand!?

I bet doing the same thing for PS4 would be agonizing due to PS3's architecture.

Microsoft doing this is awesome no doubt.

Right on both.

I have a huge backlog of PS3 games and it's one of the reasons why I haven't made the jump to PS4. If Sony had something like this I would be singing a completely different tune.

Hell, I'm considering getting an XBO just to get to play some of the games I missed last gen after I gave my 360 away.

People that don't see the difference between Psnow and local console emulation need to read a little more.

Anyway, this feature is great for the X1 owners. I got a urge to play red dead redemption again some time ago but don't have any last gen console anymore.

What's so bad with giving your console more options? I don't like this dismissal of bc and I hope they change their mind.

If bc isn't a big deal then why spend all of that money on Gakai to have people stream PS3 games then?

Is he wrong though? People act like Sony isn't speaking from experience or something. 360 had BC last generation (the same approach they're using for Xbox One to be accurate) and MS soon stopped delivering with it because most gamers didn't really give a damn. Sony dropped BC from PS3 because ultimately players didn't give a damn.

I would be happy if Sony would just add native support for PS1 and PS2 games. I'm not sure if they're even going to bother with that at this point :/

I expect that at some point since it's a lot easier to emulate then anything with the PS3 and cell.

The Xbox solution is really messy, uneven, and less than ideal, tbh. If you can't have actual native BC I would much prefer a streaming solution, if it meant the games worked/looked exactly as they once did, and I wasn't barred by what's supported and what isn't.

Conceptually what's he saying doesn't really make sense, couching it as if it's a binary choice. Xbox is also pouring a lot into features for the Xbox One OS as well as the backwards compatibility.

Like, Play While Downloading has been on my Bone Zone (great avatar, by the way) since I bought it.

It sucks but the ship has sailed on trying to convince sony to do something. For this gen at least, PS NOW and Remasters are their strategy. Very good on Microsoft for offering the alternative and differentiating themselves though. Even if I personally wouldn't get much use out of BC, its nice that the feature is included for those who want it

“It was quite a complicated announcement and I’m not sure I fully understand it yet. And I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see"

What is so complicated and hard to understand!?

MS made it sound like it was full BC, it was not, instead it is select titles devs have to update to work like 360. They made it sound way better then it is.

It's fine if I can't play my original disc and we all know PS3 is a dozy to emulate, but for the love of god, Sony, you sell PS1 and PS2 classics, let me buy them and play them on the PS4!

I want to give you money!

Lets get this out of the way now.

PS4 does not have a backwards compatibility solution

PSNow is a rental service. It is not meant to be a solution to backwards compatibility.

Also backwards compatibility is nigh impossible due to the Cell

I actually would buy a PlayStation 4 if it were able to play PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2 (and maybe even PlayStation 3) games. I'd even buy an add-on if it were only possible through an add-on.

But he says that Sony will not be following the same tactic, as the firm is investing in other software updates to PS4.
Considering that there's also a new Dashboard UI coming for the xbox those two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Good thing its primarily goal isn't BC then.
So what is the primary goal of PS now?

Million of gamers are playing 360 games, they like them, why can't that carry over to xbox one?

Sony excuses are lame. Why bother with PS now then?
