MechAssault 2 - review summaries

I can't believe I'm going to pass this game up. I was big fan of the original and the game is getting great reviews, but there are so many games coming out in Januarythat I want (Oddworld, Tork, and Mercanaries) plus I still have KotOR II coming for Xmas. Simply bad timing for MS. I'm still not quite sure why they couldn't have pushed this game out a week prior to Christmas. Hopefully, I can grab it in the next few months.

Who's getting it and who is passing it up?

TeamXbox - 9.1/10

If you borrowed, rented or bought MechAssault you will want to make sure you get your hands on a copy of its much bigger brother. The single-player story mode is beefed up and gives players a better representation of life as a soldier in the Mech world and how their role impacts the ever evolving combat tearing the galaxy in pieces. The multiplayer modes are where the game’s success is ultimately going to be measured by the audience. From what we’ve seen to this point, they certainly have plenty of reasons to chalk this one up as a winner. Day 1 Studios has pulled off a great sequel that has all but strengthened their series in what is most likely to become one of the Xbox’s strongest first party franchises on this console as well as the next version of Xbox…at least we hope so anyways.

Gamespy - 4.5/5

It would have been easy for Day 1 to simply crank out a few new online gameplay modes, mechs, and a new single-player campaign to release as the sequel to MechAssault. Thankfully, in addition to all of those necessary components, the team also drastically redeveloped the game's core mechanics. MechAssault 2 leaves its predecessor looking rather simple and boring in comparison. And the online opportunities offered in the new package are some of the most compelling available on any console … at the moment. My biggest fear is that MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf will be lost in the holiday shuffle, even given its post-Christmas release. But if you have a Live account and either grow tired of Halo 2 or you require a fresh and equally compelling experience, grab a copy of MechAssault 2. You won't likely be disappointed.

IGN - 8.9/10

For online players, the world of MechAssault 2 is your oyster. The online aspect has exploded into a deep, diverse, and potentially awesome experience. We've played most of the online matches, so we know they're excellent, as they favor team play, the smart use of a variety of mechs, and the all-important BattleArmor and VTOLs. We were unable to play a significant amount of the Conquest mode, so that remains to be seen. In all, MechAssault 2 is a bigger, better, badder sequel that rewards Xbox Live players and doesn't do much for offline players.

I'll also add this blurb from IGN as it pertains to all 3 scores.

Don't compare the score directly to the first game. Technology moves quickly in the videogame world, and so do expectations. In every way MechAssault 2 is a far better effort than the first.

Oh yes and this thread definitely needs screens...

If your not planning on lifting your Online gaming ban i suggest you get the game at a cheaper price or something

I think I'm going to get this even though the first dissapointed a bit. I watched a special/commercial for it last night and I was a bit amazed at the possibilities when you see all the new gameplay abilities....transports, leaving your mech, etc. It was really impressive. Should be a really good LIVE game.

Definitely picking this one up; looks like a big improvement over the original and a great alternative to Halo 2.

When you leave a mech/vehicle, are you able to use weapons, or are you a "helpless little man?" :) Just wondering if there could potentially be matches without any mechs being used at all.

You wear this personal armor that allows you to call in mortar strikes and the like. Or hop in tanks, jets etc. The mech hijacking is a mini code game between you and the enemy pilot. Pretty neat.

Looks fun but it's dissapointing that the single player is poor. I don't understand why it's so difficult to make a good single player campaign for this series.

I'll get it, but I'm going to wait for a sale first. Seems like every game coming out nowadays is going on sale for 37-39 bucks a week or two after release.

Definate rental. Much like the first, in that regard. Probably buy it when/if it gets to platinum hits status...again, much like the first :D

Damn those screens make me want to play it, though. Love the Uziel.

i went to ebgames.com to check the release date on this, and apparently there is a collectors edition for $49.99 and lists exclusive features for the collectors edition

then i go and look @ my gamerush pre-order slip, and it says collectors edition but i only paid $49.99. is there even a non-collectors edition? kind of odd, but cool
