I am taking credit for the term Gundabump, too.
I think you underestimated it in the first place, as a Gundam and a Musou title it should have done better. But for whatever reason you didn't even believe it'd push 40k units. I think it's pretty silly that people are already starting to treat the PS3 as the next GCN.PantherLotus said:

Yeah, it's looking pretty much like a dead franchise. Mr. Ishii can find his food in the bargain bins, soon -- oh well! That's what you get when you refuse to make the game that your entire fanbase wants you to make.
Or, a more pertinent example, like Children of Mana and SD4. Series is dead.
The bigger picture is the DS software market is reaching saturation - the supply of DS's isn't good enough to support all of the games coming out. Look for people to start holding off on buying games except for a few banner titles a year, batoning down the hatches until DQ9.

Sucks about HoM. It looked like a decent game, unlike CoM or SD4. I guess it was just the wrong genre.
I think YIDS will crack a million. I don't think Artoon screwed it up so much that it would drive people away from it like Tales of the Tempest.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but I wasn't infering a direct link between Manas crap sales and the DS game market as a whole. Because of CoM and DS4 people are just sick of the series.
I wasn't saying that big titles like your examples won't sell, in fact the opposite. The AAA-titles will still be the biggest selling software titles in Japan, as people finally get DS's they'll snap up the great back catalogue titles like New Mario. However, check out any games shop in Japan - no DS hardware but literally more than 150 or more DS titles. The vast majority of these are 2nd or 3rd tier titles (e.g. HoM even if it had not had the negativity surrounding it) - and it's those kind of games that are reaching saturation point.

A question: what will the typical reaction be for Sony's major non-game Afrika in Japan? I mean, because it is a realistic type game, and I am not sure if "Africa romanticism" is as common or even known over there as it is in Europe and America. I can't really see it as a stellar success. And that's even considering the fact that a casual nongamer won't buy a $400 PS3 for a single game. GAF, prove me wrong.

Since we still know very little about the game, it's impossible to tell. From the few things we do know, it doesn't seem like it's geared towards success in the Japanese market, but we're guessing an elephant from touching its tail here.

To suggest that the current market trajectory in Japan is pointing to Nintendo leading over Sony is hardly 'Sony doomsaying' at this point. It's still very, very early, but traditionally the system wars are settled within about 8 months of all systems being on the market, and Sony's first three have been...underwhelming, to say the least.

Well, PS3 software sales in Japan are anemic (rebutting this by saying "GUNDAM DID WELL WEEK 1" is not a rebuttal at all) and from a hardware point of view Nintendo now has a 1m unit lead.
I don't think anyone is saying "Nintendo has already won", I think it's that they're saying "Nintendo is utterly dominating right now" which is pretty much true from a a next-gen perspective in Japan.

I doubt HOME or LBP is going to turn the PS3 around.
What WOULD is some good games, good PR, and a price drop. With every week, Nintendo's lead grows, so they need to get on it.

Teases of HOME and LBP, both truly spectacular advances, are not going to sell hardware between now and November. And even when HOME drops, it's going to almost inevitably catch at least some flak, because it will be in its earliest days, and the stuff that most people are drooling about, like HOME Expos replacing E3 and shit, are a long ways off. And by the time all that stuff is really cleanly and awesomely implemented, who knows how far ahead its competitors may have gotten?
Because, realistically, I don't know much software coming to the console between now and E3, and how many AAA announcements made there will be ready for deployment by the holidays?
Who knows, really. But at this point it's not even the software that's an issue. It's the cost of entry. The 20gig is Keyser Soze, and $600 is a lot to ask.
