I've always liked MM7. Not as much as 9, 3 or 2 but I've never thought it was a bad game, or the black sheep of the classic series. The last boss is brutal but not impossible. Now 8 on the other hand I've never really liked much. It looks pretty but to me it feels off in almost every other way. I still enjoy playing it from time to time though.

Btw I used the boss order I was used to in MM7 instead of the one in the OP and the weapons do enough damage to convince me that it's either the correct one or a possible order anyway. The order:
Burstman/Cloudman/Junkman/Freezeman/Slashman/Springman/Shademan/Turboman
. I'll try the variation in the OP once I get to the boss gauntlet part.

What's the story with Mega Man VII?

Why does it feel so off in comparison to Mega Man X?

I always thought that the bigger sprites and characters was because Capcom was trying to promote the animated series. MM was really big in there, too. Plus, almost all adverting for 7, including the manual, pimped out the cartoon like crazy

I'm astonished that anyone would fight Freeze Man first. He's, like, the hardest one!

Sorry. It's the way I have been doing it since SNES back in 95.

The trick is to try to stay in the middle as he runs back and forth. Be ready for his freeze shots and by being in the middle, you kinda control where the icicles end up spawning.

So, a quick question for you all. Have anyone finished Megaman 8'yet? I ask because I had a shit-ton of audio glitches, and I can't tell if it's my surround sound of not.

A lot of times, the triggered voice over didn't work in cue or did randomly. For example:

-the title screen being announced ("Megaman 8!")
-the robot masters introducing themselves as their stage is selected.
-Roll speaking during the shop screens.

And I noticed the wrong theme playing as you meet Dr. wily for the final battle. The Wily Stage map music plays out instead of his theme.
As well as the credits theme cuts off the second the "Thank you for playing" screen appears (when the trophy is awarded)

Also, Protodude brought this up on Twitter:

Started with Mega Man 8 on the PS4 retail copy. Nothing above has happened. Game played with no problems. Finished all challenges and am moving on to Mega Man 7. I do Freezeman first as we'll. He's easy and fun to fight once you realize he jumps when you shoot.

Mega Man 9 was my first Mega Man game that I've enjoyed back when it came out, so I was extremely excited to revisit it.

But just like before, I have to face the bitter reality that I'm terrible at Mega Man games. I /barely/ beat Galaxy Man and I've burned through about a dozen game overs on Splash Woman's stage. The second mine bit REALLY stumped me, until my girlfriend suggested I go left instead of right and that helped a LOT.

Now I'm stuck on Splash Woman heheheh

Also forgot to mention that I'm trying to beat it without save states and without using the boss powers!

Good luck with that :) It'll take a little while to nail down at first but once you get the boss patterns down it feels so damn satisfying to beat the bosses that way. Its how I always play the Mega Man games as I love the boss fights and felt the weapons made things far too easy!

Speaking of doing buster only runs against bosses - anyone have any tips for the Guts Man fortress boss fight in Mega Man 7? The blocks from the ceiling seem to have a somewhat random nature at times and his rushing claw attack seems almost impossible to prevent (I've managed it a couple of times, but I'm not to a point where I can consistently do it), Definitely seems so much easier to just use Slash Claw that's for sure!

I just got started with Mega Man 8. It plays so well, I can't believe I'm actually enjoying it so far. I never gave the game a chance, but it's impressive and the level design is great. Even the jump/slide part wasn't that bad.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
This is my first time playing MM7, was not ready for Shade Man's bootleg-ass Castlevania stage lol.

Burst Man is easy, though. I've always startet with him and so almost always use Buster only.

Burst Man is also the only one to flinch when you shoot him with Mega Buster, so the game designers actually intended him to be done first. As far as I know, no other boss in the game flinches when you shoot him with charged Mega Buster.

It also reminded me of Ghouls 'n Ghosts. With the coffins rising from the ground and all.

Play the stage again, but this time hold B while you select Shade Man and keep holding it til his stage appears. ;)

Edit: Or whatever SNES's "B" is on the version you are playing now.

The first four bosses form a circle of weaknesses as do the second set. You can jump in at any point with any robot master your comfortable beating with the buster.

Tried Freeze Man buster-only last night and after three deaths managed to figure out his (frankly, embarrassingly obvious in retrospect) pattern. Think I'll start with him from now on!

MM8 is just as good as I remembered.

MM7 is also a very pleasant game but fuck that final boss, lol. I just couldn't manage to beat him so I used the half damage option and I ended up beating him with 3 energy tanks remaining. I think I lucked out since he was throwing lightning balls 70% of the time during that particular encounter. But now I'm gonna have to try it again the hard way I guess, haha.

I'll do another attempt tomorrow but in the meantime, I'm moving on to MM9, my second favorite in the series after 2. Should be fun. I also look forward to 10, the only one I've never completed.

Oh, wow. Thanks, I'm gonna try that. I'm so curious! :D

B button on the SNES was the jump button, right? So that would be X on the PS4?

We need to come up with a new universal symbol in games for health pickups. Something the old games can be easily edited to. Like a Red Diamond instead of a plus sign (I mean "Cross").

Generally a green cross is okay, but dealing with old games like this editing color might be a nightmare.

It gets better if you remap the controls: Put sub-weapons on 'triangle' and regular buster on 'square'. It makes it easy to use the buster and sub weapons at the same time, which makes sub weapons much more useful!

Really annoyed that Rockman & Bass was not included at all. Oh well, I love Mega Man so I'll get this. I haven't played through 7 or 8 in over a decade lol

Man, I used to do this when I first played the game, but I don't know how I did it. He's so annoying to fight as is, and even using one of his weaknesses isn't much better since you still have to deal with unbreakable bubbles getting in the way, constantly at risk of hitting the spikes, and the field littered with bombs.
Clearly I haven't seen how you're "supposed" to beat him, so this is just how I've struggled.

I haven't thought of doing that since the controls have felt very natural to me. Bottom button as jump and the shooting buttons on the side make it easy to jump and choose an attack.

The most important rule is to never touch his bubbles. Basically you jump over the three bubbles he shoots and hit him with a fully charged shot during the last jump. He will flinch and drop some bombs on the floor. You have to time a jump to evade their explosions and repeat the whole thing. If everything works as planned he shouldn't even move, except backwards when you hit him.

Robin, I tried to press both X and O and nothing happens? :/

It's really easy if you use the Rush jetpack suit thing

Just finished a buster-only, no death, no items run of Mega Man 10. Still loved it.

I completely don't understand why people talk of it like some lesser, second or third tier mega man game. It's right up there with the all-time greats to me. Perfect balance of difficulty, tons of content, three playable characters, great bosses and weapons, great stages, great music, great enemies and enemy variety... just a fantastic package. It feels slightly less tight and focused than Mega Man 9, but that is easily the best game in the classic series, so I forgive Mega Man 10 for not quite hitting that bar.

Correct, especially NES games, or older.

That's why I think it should be shape-based edit, that can scale well to big and small. (A 3x3 pixel cross could just take the middle dot out.)

Agreed. I thought it was an excellent sequel with some brilliant bosses. It felt great on hard mode as well when the bosses all gained some great new attacks. Definitely in my top 3-5 games in the series along with 9, 2 and 3.

True, but I'm doing a buster only run without using any powerups for the challenge, so the jetpack is a no-no! I managed it in the end though, easy just to stay to the left of the screen as the blocks will never land on you, then its just a matter of vaulting over the blocks as they are punched toward you and keep shooting Guts Man as he charges toward you. Fairly straight forward as long as you fire fast enough during the charging attack.

My copy comes Monday. It's been years since I've played 8, but am I remembering incorrectly in thinking that the game looked great?

Had to do some farming but I have finally conquered MM9. Don't know if I'm good enough to beat it as Proto Man but I'll give it a shot eventually. And is there a way to look at a list of the in-game achievements from the menu?

Anyway, I've moved on to MM10 and god, the early stage are kicking my ass. I love the Commando Man stage theme though.

Nah, it looks superb.

I game achievements were moved about I. The collection, so now you have to go to "challenges", then select either mm9 or 10 and then select "original challenges" to view them.

Ah, I see, thanks!
They were right under my nose by I kept looking for them in MM9 itself because of my foggy memories of the menus on the Wii version, haha.

.

Just beat wily on MM7 normally. One tip is to charge the coil weapon and hold 'up' when firing while on the ground(don't jump). This makes the coils bounce high enough to hit him anywhere he reveals himself, ensuring you are doing dmg every single time he appears. You never need to jump near him to land a shot ever.

At that point it's just attrition and even if you get hit each turn as well, 3 energy tanks will be enough to outlast him. Though his fire pellets do the most dmg to you, so avoid those as best you can, even taking a freeze or thunder pellet if needed as they barely do much.
