Did anyone play PW competitively? The mode seemed like it had a little bit of care put into it, but I can't imagine the lobbies ever filling up.

It was active when the HD collection came out, mainly for folks wanting to boost trophies or what not. But yeah, it's surprisingly well crafted.

The controls for it are far less confusing in MGS3.
For starters, MGS4's usage of it is barely explained, so I don't even know how to interrogate. Not only that but it uses the R1 button, which just feels really weird to me.

For the record: I still liked 4, I just thought 3 still had superior gameplay.

That's 100% on you dude xD The buttons are displayed on the screen. Can't be any more .obvious than that

I've played it quite a bit. I still try to hop on every week or two for a few rounds, if anyone else is online. If I happen to find a good group to run with, then I stick around for as long as I can!

This my car & I. Kojima retweeted it a few months ago.

You might be thinking of Ground Zeroes or Peace Walker, as MGS4 only has one prompt. Although I think Ground Zeroes has the best CQC implementation in the entire franchise.

The only button on the screen when you CQC is Triangle, which I assume kills the person you are CQC'ing (I've never tried it because normally I don't ever CQC kill that way). It doesn't tell you that the ability to snap necks are removed, or to interrogate unless you go purposely to the help section (that I assumed was only for beginners, as I had already played pretty much every MGS until that point, so I didn't expect it to be so radically changed)
But it seems like people are thinking that I prefer MGS3's actual gameplay, when I was referring to the CQC gameplay. Normal-gameplay wise I agree that MGS4 was superior in many ways (although I missed the ability to eat to gain stamina instead of that weird system in 4).

Not much I agree... But I don't recall the buttons being that different from MGS3.
GZ completely changed the controls.

So what game explains the origin of the patriots and the role Zero and stuff played. I played mgs4 and had no idea who zero was. Now I played mgs3; I learned Major Zero existed. What the fuck fills the gaps? Besides Peace Walker which wasn't released at the time.

MGS2 fills the gaps regarding the whole patriots thing.

Never understood why there was only ad-hoc multiplayer. I understand that it may have been good in Japan with greater levels of handheld gaming, but I can't imagine the PSP multiplayer had much activity in the West.

I'm referring to the HD collection verison, which I believe had online multiplayer.

I played the hell out of MGS4 thinking it might be the last MGS, but sure enough, MGS5 is coming out, but I don't know if I have the same drive as before.

Sorry, I played MG's 1,2,3, 4. I don't recall anything about
zero or major zero, sigint and paramedic?
that's what the wiki said, anyway.

Yeah that's kind of a weird poorly explored MGS 4 plot twist. Hopefully we will get more of that side of the story in Phantom Pain.

Also have any of you checked out the indie game Volume yet? It's heavily inspired by 2D Metal Gear and early MGS gameplay.

(the game plays slower than this, but had to cut frames for gif size purposes)

It's made by the guy who did Thomas Was Alone. Set for release this year.

Yeah! Mike Bithell is an awesome designer. Volume looks great, and really gives me those MGS1 VR feels!

There's no mention of any of those characters since they were introduced in MGS3.

that's not true. zero is in
the ending of mgs4and sigint is the DARPA chief Donald Anderson in MGS1[. but still, it was some bullshit throwing that in there. makes zero (har har) sense playing MGS3 within the context of knowing what zero becomes

on another note, i played PW HD online recently, and it's still going. i wouldn't exactly say strong, but i was able to play like a dozen co-op missions and about an hour of PvP with like 10 other people

FUCK Ground Zeroes' "Eliminate the Renegade" mission. All I can muster is an A.

That mission requires some real methodical speed-running for the S. Time is of the essence and it's strict as fuck on Hard. I'd suggest looking at a YT playthrough and doing what they do to the letter, if you really want the S.

I am referring to MGS2.
The DARPA Chief being sigint and Zero being at the helm was retconned (read: bullshit) in after the fact in MGS4

FUCK Ground Zeroes' "Eliminate the Renegade" mission. All I can muster is an A.

Since you have the Sniper Rifle, pick it up at the start then sprint over and tranq the guard standing on the rocks. Sprint along the low cliffside and crawl/laydown behind the bush near the rock at the end of the path and tranq the guy by the fence. Get up and run back the way you came about 30ft or so, climb up and lay down when the jeep passes and tranq the two that get out to investigate the guy sleeping by the fence.

Sprint up the left road to the little guard hut and tranq the guy walking along the outer fence, then get close and tranq the guy in the wood watchtower. Climb up the watchtower, call for extraction where you started, pull out the Sniper and aim for the bald guy, you should know exactly where he starts by now, I think. He walks out to the right, from behind the ammo storage building almost directly ahead of you.

Shoot him in his bald head, crouch, then aim at the large tower at the admin building, shoot the dude inside the tower. Sometimes he tries to escape but he's easy pickings when he's on the ladder. When he's dead run back to the chopper and feel free to pick up a POW on your way out, but that's not necessary for an S if you do it fast enough.

You should be out of there in less than 5 minutes, with or without a POW.

As I just beat the main mission in GZ yesterday, I have to say the game feels extremely polished. My only question is how do you roll while prone? I want to roll from cover to cover and crawl lol.

Go prone, aim, and tilt the left analog stick left or right while clicking it down (L3)

That seriously looks awesome, PC only or consoles too?

PC, Vita, and PS4 for sure. Not sure about PS3, 360, Xbone, or Wii U.

Aim while in prone and then the direction you want to roll while holding the sprint button.

FUCK YES! Thank you so much. I used some of this to help me out. Turns out the biggest help was running around to tranq a few more guards. And thankfully I was able to shoot the guy in the tower and it registered.
Escaped with no combat alerts, in 4:54, and no retries.

I was playing MGS2, decided to give this another go for the sake of it, and I did it on my first try today. Finally I have peace of mind.

Grab sniper, go up right hill, prone (call Morpho to starting point), wait for jeep to pass. Tranq 2 guards by bridge. Sneak up guard tower. Throw smoke nade in tower. Thermal goggles on. Look straight down scope where search light is facing. You should spot Palitz. Kill him. Turn right and notice the APC parked by gate. Look up in guard tower above that and kill Glaz. Run back to start point without getting spotted. S rank.

Glad I could help. :)

I was really proud of myself when I figured that out all on my own.

Just finished GZ again...
I was showing it to my dad (he's 62). So I didn't skip any cut scenes, played as stealthy as possible.
My dad was really shocked at the whole Paz scene. He was so surprised they'd put that in a game. Never mind his reaction to the snuke :p.

He was amazed by all the transitions from cut scene to game without any hitch.
He enjoyed the sound coming from the PS4 controller.
Then the credits rolled an he was like wow that was good ^^
Afterwards when they show that trailer for the phantom he pain he litterly exclaimed
"Man! This game!!

It's cool to think how non gamers can appreciate a good Kojima game :D
On a side note, when "here's to you" started playing he was like. Hey do you know this song? I used to listen to this back in the day!

That's really awesome that you Dad was able to enjoy time with you with the game like that. Glad he was entertained and intrigued.

Thanks for sharing with us.

About the Renegade Ops mission: I find that it's easier to treat it as a snatch mission rather then an assassination mission.

First, take the prisoners out of the cages and evac them.
Then, grab the Bald Guy first and evac him via Chopper.
Then grab the other guy and bring him to the closest exit point. Stealthily of course.

I find it's much easier to S-rank it this way.

Hint:
Throwing guards off the cliff does not count against your kill count.

Playing MGS2 and shit got heavy really fast with Emma.

Holy crap.

I love that whole sequence. She's a cute character both in design and personality. Having Snake angrily break up the sibling rivalry was funny. There's an awesome twilight aesthetic with the Big Shell's night lights turning on but the sun hasn't set yet over Manhattan. The music is sexy. The sniping section is tedious on replays but as far as escort missions go, this one wasn't bad.

IIRC the controller vibrates when you're underwater with her. That's her listening to Raiden's heartbeat as explained in the prior cutscene. dat level of detail.

At first I didn't like the subplot about her and Otacon's parents, but on replays I realized that the reason for including both that and the Peter Stillman subplot about not having his leg actually broken is because one of the themes of the game was refusal to face reality. It culminates in Raiden's character arc over the course of the game. He mentally blocks out his time as a child soldier and doesn't talk about himself with Rose. He was fooling himself, just like Stillman and Emma had unresolved pasts of their own.

emma was okay until
she died and there was like 45 minutes of soap opera music and otacon weeping. just so ridiculously over the top
