That bit at the end on the chopper was harder to watch than any other video game moment for me personally and I have no idea why.

I've done the GTA Torture stuff multiple times
I've played all the god of war games.
I perfected all the fatalities in multiple MK games including X-rays and stuff in MK9

I was squirming at the chopper scene in this.

Maybe it was how engrossed I became with the story.

who knows.

I wasn't too disutbed by it. I guess I was expecting a lot worse since this scene was hyped up a lot.

The tapes though...

100% done.

Getting an S Rank on the AA Guns (hard) went easier than expected, thanks to the sniper rifle -- which you need a B Rank to unlock.

Two of the AA guns have explosive barrels next to them, so you only need to plant C4 on the one closest to you; but before that, pick up the sniper, go back to where you started and lay down, then shoot the barrel next to the northeast AA gun, you can just barely see the red/white under the parked truck. Since there's an explosion, they pay no attention to your shot and they all look towards it, away from you, and some run in that direction.

Drop down over the fence, crawl to underneath the AA gun and plant C4 -- you might have to tranq 1 or 2 guys -- then crawl (crouch when safe) all the way to the cages. There's usually a guard in the tower that will come down because the POW's start asking you for help, but he wasn't there on my last run for some reason; if he is, just tranq him. Extract all the POW's from the east RV.

Now, crouch/crawl all the way to the very northeast corner, behind the yellow tire spikes or whatever. There's a few guys (3-4) that hang around the NE AA gun you destroyed, so tranq them from under the bridge, in the brush. When you get to the corner you can snipe the barrel next to the NW AA gun; when that blows, jog/run to the SE watchtower by the road, but take the road that goes by the cages to avoid guards. And watch out for mines! you have to climb up the left side and take the little narrow ledge to bypass them.

Go to the curve in the road, lay down, detonate the C4 on the first AA gun and plant the remaining 4 right in the middle of the road. Now take cover in the little white guard post and wait for the APC to drive over the C4 and detonate. BOOM!

Call Morpho and GET TO DA CHOPPAH!

I haven't had much time to play this lately, so I have a lot left to do. Only just started the side mission to kill the duo. I get a sniper rifle and take out bald duder from a tower, turn, as the place goes on alert towards the tower where other guy is positioned. Only it's just in time to watch him vanish into thin air, and I'm presuming spawn in a vehicle or ...somewhere. What the fuck, Kojima? You can't give these guys a path to head towards on foot when things go to shit to make it seem more realistic? That sucks. I hope there's more dynamic opportunities going on in TPP. Leave the magic act out of it.

There's no way the full writing quality (however low or high that may be) will be on display here. Already all of the dialogue from the opening cutscene of Ground Zeroes is edited from the Cassette briefings (which are way better read than 90% of the in-mission dialogue to begin with).

That being said Sutherland, at this point in the story, is a way better choice than Hayter. Dave just isn't old enough yet to play the Big Boss this crazy story deserves, with the arc this character will have traveled by the end of TPP. I would love to have David back as Solid Snake if the story permits but if not there needs to be a deviation between the two and now is the time. The leader of Zanzibar Land, the legendary Mercenary Big Boss cannot sound the same as Solid Snake. I can't think of anyone (inclined to be doing VO for games anyway) that is a better fit; experience, countenance and age-wise than Keifer Sutherland.

Anyone (foolishly sometimes) invested in Metal Gear should be over the fucking moon that not only do we have a fitting voice for Big Boss but that it's Keifer "Jack Bauer Power Hour" Sutherland.

I took out the bald dude but raised an alert, knowing the other was at the admin building, I rushed over there, jumped in the tank and hoped I'd catch him fleeing amidst the chaos. Suddenly I hear the gate open, and lo and behold, there he is trying to escape in a car. I blow him up, and ride the tank to freedom. Seemed pretty dynamic to me.

Oh I am, loved his performance, brief though it was in GZ, and would never have imagined he'd be voicing a character in this series, let alone Big Boss.

I don't like the choice of Sutherland and I don't like what we've heard so far, while admitting that that's very little and not nearly enough to judge.

However I agree with the rest. The split had to be made. It should have been made in MGS3 when this began, but it's really necessary now. Especially as the two may meet at some point in a game in the future. My only problem is that I got so used to Hayter as Big Boss that when I hear Sutherland's voice I don't connect the two performances as the same character. Hopefully that changes as we hear more of the new Big Boss in Phantom Pain.

And I also agree that Hayter should always voice Solid.

Whatever about Snake's new voice, I just hope that Kojima goes back to his old cutscene style for the full game, and that this 'first person cinema' is just an arty experiment for Ground Zeroes. Otherwise I doubt I'll care too much about who's saying what.

Seeing all the prices sky rocket for the series I don't know if I can play them now. Waited on getting the Collection and poof. So if I wanted to watch a thorough recap, suggestions? Wanted to play, since I don't think watching will provide the same emotional connection.

About the Sutherland debate - I don't think there's any evidence that Sutherland was picked over Hayter for story reasons.. because if that were true why hasn't the japanese VA for Snake been changed as well? :p

I just found it lame that the other guy just teleports to a vehicle. Games like GTA don't even fall back on that crutch.

Part of the scripting is that the bald dude gets in a jeep after some time has passed and drives to Chico's prison area. Are you certain he wasn't doing that right before you got the alarm?

Uhm? I have played that mission a couple times and every time I got both of them walking. Once the bald guy was on a car riding around, but I killed him once he went back on foot. The guy with the glasses was in front of the gates with another 3 guys, so I just waited for him to do some move. A couple minutes later he started to walk towards me (I was on top of the building next to the small bridge near one of the exits). By the end him and another guy were walking towards the exit, so I grabbed him right before leaving and killed him. Then it was just a matter of getting rid of the guard next to the exit and that was it.

I've only played Metal Gear Solid 3 and haven't even read up the stories of Peace Walker and the like. What all should I read about before playing this? I know there's some questionable stuff like
The Boss being an AI
or something. If I can avoid hearing about stuff like that, that would be great

I got it this time. I managed to take glasses guy out in the tower and wait till alert went down again. Caught bald guy on his patrol near the tents and then booked it. Maybe it was just a glitch I ran into, I can't tell.

My God. I can't for the life of me be good at this game. I always get a D or E rank. The biggest hit I get is from the time. I take way too long, and it just takes thousands of points away from me. How can you guys be so stealthy and fast the same time. I crawl and wait and be patient, but I end up screwing it up anyway. I still get some alerts even trying to be really careful.

You just need to be swift. You can crawl, but crouch walking works well. Don't be afraid to sprint and dive into cover. You sometimes just need to take the risk.

Once you learn the map layout and enemy/objective placements, you'll get a feel for areas you can rush through. Also, get good at abusing the tranq pistol and the "get down" option on enemies.

Beaten the main story mission about 10 times already and i'm still not bored with it. Can't believe we got another metal gear game, even if just a demo. The motion capture at 60fps never fails to impress me, the emotions were portrayed successfully. For the most part this is an upresd last-gen game with some nice added effects and it still looks great. I hope by the time TPP comes out that the Fox Engine gets some notable improvements, most notably on the characters themselves with tessellation or an increase in polycount.

It's just a shame I kind of knew what was coming. The tapes though were pretty tough despite not actually seeing anything, instead Kojima provides you with audio and allows your mind to fill in the blanks to its horrifying conclusion. And it's hard not to shed a tear for Paz who's been to hell and back because of Skull-face's sheer sadism.

There's a backstory synopsis in the main menu of Ground Zeroes that kind of gets you up to speed. It has cool music as well. :p

Wait, he vanished? I know there's a car right next to the ladder that leads up to the guard tower, doesn't he just run to it? I remember seeing him do so a couple of times.

Also, make sure to tranq all the guys near the tower you're shooting from. It's possible to take them both out without anyone seeing you. I think it's the guy in the other tower that spots you immediately.

Use the Tranq and Stun pistols. Or rush them and CQC them into a slam or hold-up.

Getting the no kills achievement on the VIP escort mission is frustrating. After a-many restarts I finally complete it using the stun gun revolver only to find when I destroyed the APC it must of killed a soldier at the same time arrrgghh

Yes, you have to bait the APC away from the stunned guards to where RPG splashdamage doesn't kill them.

I also think after having played it that he is a better choice. With the tone that Kojima is going for here and the material he's tackling (not to mention the improved graphics), I think Hayter's performance would be totally out of place. Continuity be damned, I don't think I should be having a laugh at the VA of the lead character in a story that involves rescuing mistreated and tortured POWs from what is essentially Guantanamo Bay.

The time I shot baldy and the place was on alert immediately, I had taken everyone out near me in my tower, but there were some guys about 80 yards out that spotted me immediately when I thought they wouldn't. I turned to look in the big tower with glasses guy and as I do, him and his dudes slowly just vanish. It must have been a bug...I hope it was, anyway. The very first time I tried this one, I had no idea they'd eventually just bail and I failed it. Took way too much time being super stealthy. Getting these guys out alive must be quite a feat.

Maybe that's my problem. I primarily only crouch walk, and I never sprint. I always thought sprinting would be so loud and probably only reserved for a non-stealthy approach.

Once you learn the map layout and enemy/objective placements, you'll get a feel for areas you can rush through. Also, get good at abusing the tranq pistol and the "get down" option on enemies.

Well most of my playthrough of The Phantom Pain, I'm not going to be familiar with the maps. I hope having a reasonable stealth run isn't going to depend so much on map memorization. :/ Also what's this "get down" option? I'm not familiar with that.

Use the Tranq and Stun pistols. Or rush them and CQC them into a slam or hold-up.

This is typically what I do, but I'm just so slow and bad at it. :p
This is the first time an MGS game has been a little on the frustrating side. I think it's because that score is so in your face. Before, I was okay with just taking my time and patiently sneaking through the world. Here, I feel like I'm failing class. :p

Eh, don't worry about S-ranks if you're doing the missions for the sake of missions.

Speaking of which: Easy S-rank in Side Mission: Classified Intel
Basically do the infiltration trophy with just the first tape in the guard tower and you get an S-rank. WTF? No need for the REAL tape? Maybe in Hard?

Stick them up (approach from behind with your gun aimed), hold LB or L2, then right analog down

Hold-up someone. Drop your ready/aim-hold-up and then interrogate them as if you had them in CQC. Then select "GET DOWN"

Yeah.

Once Boss gives the order to get down, you can run away and do whatever. You don't even have to wait for them to get down. lol

They'll stay down forever too until unless someone finds them, or you get an alert.

A good exploit to do is tranq them. Then carry their body to a dark place. Kick them/CQC them back to life. Ready your gun. You should then hold them up. Then interrogate->GET DOWN them to where they stay down indefinitely where no one will find them.

Haha, I managed to do it once on Normal. Not on Hard though. Went for Baldy first and carried him back to the extraction point where you begin the mission, then found Glasses in the Admin building.

This is pretty much what I expected based on all the previews -- a completely open-ended Metal Gear experience. I've been waiting for another stealth game that just gives me a map and asks me to figure out my own plan for completing objectives. I think this is pretty much the only stealth game I've seen in years to give me this much freedom.

Snake also controls really well. I've been pretty shocked with how much they've been able to streamline Metal Gear controls in recent years without actually dumbing down the game.

Also, the game looks good enough on PS3 in my opinion. The lighting and weather look nice and the characters still look great. It's not like THIEF where the PS3/360 version looks like they hacked down the graphics or anything. I'd say it actually looks more realistic than most PS3/360 games.

Hopefully Phantom Pain builds on this structure. It could be awesome actually playing missions like this within larger open-world environments. To me it kind of sounds like what Far Cry 2 should have been.

Once you learn the map layout and enemy/objective placements, you'll get a feel for areas you can rush through. Also, get good at abusing the tranq pistol and the "get down" option on enemies.

This is the one thing I suck at doing. I can't pop out in front of an enemy and nail him with the tranq before he calls and alert. I always have to get them from behind with a tranq or CQC. Also, when you knock down an enemy with CQC, how long do they stay out?
