How do you enter free roam? Is deploying into an area and just doing side ops free roam? Or is there a separate mode for free roam?

I swear I saw a tab for free-roam in the iDroid somewhere. Do you have to be online to access it?

Is there anyone here who fully completed the story and liked it? Either as a self contained plot or as a part of the larger MGS narrative. The game is a ton of fun so far (still pretty early), but reading all this negativity is starting to make me worried.
Would like to know this as well.

Just select a sideop and you'll automatically be in "free roam" mode.

Can someone tell me what the point of this huge weapon arsenal is when the game activly punishes you for not being sneaky? This is absolutely retarted. Like what is even the point in spending any money for the develpment of those?

Welp Mission 18 is pretty much a sign for me to take a break. Most frustrated I'd been in a mission.
At first I dreaded the escort mission but after a while it became somewhat bearable until the enemies went into bullshit overdrive and somehow popping out of everywhere within 50m distances despite trying my hardest to take them all out. Doesn't help that the AI of the kids take a huge dump on what I ask them to do. The gunship is also a load of horse's ass and the kicker is the enemies popping out even closer to the extraction chopper and me sustaining fire while desperately trying to huddle them up to it while taking damage. If I hadn't had Quiet with me on this mission protecting me I'd been fucked. For some reason the checkpoints were fucking up too since every time I tried a different desperate measure and ended up retrying almost instantly, the enemy positions had become even closer to me, a few times to the point that they'd instantly detect the kids upon reload. Somehow though I bullshitted my way through and managed to spawn a checkpoint where the first line of approaching soldiers were all tranqed.

And somehow despite failing every bonus point prerequisite I still get a S rank.

Traversal really becomes a chore at a point. Why can't I climb ANYTHING? Seriously I hate having to walk 10 miles to go around a 15 foot deep ravine....

woooooooooooow at that retcon:

(medbay scene... if you don't know what it is, don't highlight)

Seriously this where they go with Paz? Hey, surprise, we actually checked her vagina and she totally didn't blow up! You see Snake was all "I know something's wrong! Why don't you shove your hand into her vagina and check!" Except he didn't say that, but the doctor knew it anyway, and we got a great fisting scene. It's all good now, she's alive, yay! wut

I initially thought the same,
but I'm having my doubts immediately coming out of her room. She actually looks younger than in GZ.

I also find it fishy that is a coincidence that she was just there and Miller and Ocelot didn't even tell Snake. After 9 years she should have an actual scar, her injury still seems rather recent. And well, Snake seems to have formulated a memory to try explain her survival. This is the same man who said earlier in a tape he had trouble to differentiate what memories were real and what were part of his neurological damage.

Select a mission from the Side Missions section.
Its really disappointing though. The world is completely empty. Its much better to just do the side missions experiencing some of the world as you travel to them and away from them.

Agreed. There is a lot of rock humping in the game.

Since when? I'm hardly ever sneaky and have killed my fair share of people and still gotten S ranks.

I'm having a problem with the online part (xbox360). It says I'm logged in to the server and when I start the game, it wants me to build a fob. I can select a territory (ocean), confirm it and then it seems to hang. I waited several minutes and nothing seems to happen. I can use my guide button and the menu in the background seems to be flickering, but I can't go back or do anything. Should I be more patient? I tried it several times, rebooted the game, rebooted my xbox.

How does it punish you? The opposite is the case, they even changed the requirements for S-Ranks to make it possible to go in not-so-stealthy

Using the Bionic Arm for the first time and hearing the sound effect for it. I can imagine Kojima being a big fan of Steve Austin. Dat Nostalgia!

I would say it's not what people expected, that in it's self doesn't mean one way or the other, but when expectations are subverted, it generally causes a negative reaction.

Just so dumb that they made these BEAUTIFUL climbing animations and then gave you like 3 occasions to use them in the entire fucking world. You should be able to climb every rock. It's so "videogamey" having these narrow canyons to funnel you everywhere. I don't understand the rationale.

Why does he wear the mask!?
Move your troops. You'd be surprised how 5 minutes of proper management can get anything build. Auto assign usually balances everyone out. In the battle and a weapon requires R&D and Intel? Move all the best troops from medical or combat and watch the rank increase.
I would but I've spent ages sorting the team out with diplomats and troublemakers etc

My ocd wouldn't let me

It actually works best in MGSV than in past games. In past games they only rank you at the end of the game. So you only ever use the tranq gun the whole game. But in MGSV you get ranked after every mission and side ops don't even get ranked so you can go guns blazing in those. And since you can replay missions for better ranks, I don't really see the issue with it. I've S ranked missions by being reckless a couple times.

The Bionic arm's attract function is pretty much useless, enemies need to be less than 10m away for it to work, that's too close and I'd rather just go to them instead. The magazine throw distraction also needs to be very close for it to work.

You're right about the 'knock' but magazines are great. You can create a trail and pull guards along a path to isolate them. Just have to be careful to throw the magazine so that the guard moves in a direction where you're not in their LOS.

Okay, how should I even do mission 16 ?
Yeah I'm kind of stuck here as well. Tried it 5 times already.

For real? I only saw that I geat points deduced for alarms and stuff. Is there a list where I can see the requirements for S-rank?

You've gotta be FUCKING kidding me game. Three big fucking problems just happened.

A) On a mission to extract a prisoner. It isn't until literally when I grab the fucking guy that the game suddenly tells me that I can't actually fulton him. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. I literally did my entire strategy around the fact that it would be the same as fucking normal.

B) So I have the guy and don't know what to fucking do so I hoof it to a fucking jeep and the controls just don't fucking work to put him in that, too.

C) I die... and guess what. The goddamned shitty fucking checkpoint system means I lose 45 minutes to an hour of gameplay because I fucked up at the last second, and I didn't even fuck up, the fucking game didn't tell me this pertinent information.

Fucking hell I swear if I had a game disc right now I'd throw it out the damned window.

I said it in my post in the spoilers thread that people's expectations is going to be the downfall.

Just a general tip, sometimes the person you're going to fulton is hurt to the point that he can't be fulton'd.

Get all the photos/MB Soldiers and it will be explained

I really wish you could have a combat and transportation buddy. I wanna have Quiet or D-Dog with me on missions but having to be on foot so much just isn't worth it.

Extracting optional prisoners gives you a shit ton of points. They more than make up for any killed enmeis or alerts. Calling in support choppers and artillery will restrict you to an A at best though. I think the only thing that has a more nuanced ranking system is your animal rank.

I don't know of any list, but S-Ranks are pretty much based around speed now. Even if you get detected and kill plenty of ppl you can still get an S Rank.

Okay, how should I even do mission 16 ?

Air strikes worked for me. Just make sure you havent been spotted when the cutscene starts and then sneak off to a good vantage point. ( I used the hanger) Then wait for them to move away from the truck and call in an air strike on them. Kills them all instantly.
I never even fired a shot.

Kill all of the soldiers who are around the vehicle, call in D-Walker and position him close to the truck, run close to the truck to trigger the cut-scene, fulton the truck and then just drive away on D-Walker.

A) You need a fucking chill pill, there's always going to be surprises in a MGS game.

B) It's really not that hard to call in a heli and put the wounded prisoner in it.

Except that's literally never happened up until now for me, and it wouldn't be so bad if the fucking saving system wasn't horse shit and a half. I shouldn't lose this much game time for that...

For those having trouble in Mission 16, I completed it using
D-Walker. Just make sure you have the Gatling gun equipped. After they leave the airport, I was able to sneak behind them and fulton the patrol in the back, and then simply hopped in D-Walker and initiated the cutscene for the Skulls to appear, and then simply unloaded my entire clip into all of them, making sure I dodged any of their attacks with Square. The 500 bullets in the gatling gun was just enough to kill all four of the Skulls.

Ocelot and them straight up named you, it's even said in the game what the reasoning was for calling you that, the name was created before he woke up

From what I've experienced so far, I think people might be better off taking a more Dark Souls'ish mindset in terms of the story telling for this game, the information is still there, but rather than sit through 90 minute cutscenes, now you need to seek it out if you want to know, and connect the dots yourself.
Lol what.
the story is just told in tapes and cutscenes, nothing like souls.
Mgsv has the most simple and obvious story in the series.
