So I did mission 10 an rescued the named prisoner... However, unfortunately he died on the motherbase which pisses me off since he is aspecialist. Has his death been scripted or did he die unluckily? Can I repeat the mission and get him another time?
When you rescue him, he should be put immediately in the SICKBAY, there, you should put a Direct Contact on him. That will prohibit Miller from throwing him out.

Almost done with my FOB2. Just need to finish Intel and Medical platforms. Then I can finally take a break and start my backlog.

Been getting back into this lately. Starting to get more creative during missions (not just tranquilising everything) and not getting too bogged down by Side Ops. It really is a lot of fun. Everything feels so...organic? From the controls in the field to iDroid implementation to the mucking about at Mother Base... And best of all, it still feels like Metal Gear (Solid).

I just have a few questions about managing your army:

1. Is it okay to just auto-assign people? I don't really want to spend too much time sifting through new recruits, but if it's going to harm me in the long-run I may reconsider. (I at least tend to put every A+ and above on contract.)

2. What do you do about high rank soldiers that are also troublemakers? I've seen others who will apparently reduce trouble, but I'm never sure if auto-assign is going to break that balance and I'll end up with lots of sick people or something.

3. When new people join your ranks, they have a little dot next to their name/picture. How do you get rid of that? (This is just some light OCD wanting to mark everything as "read"...)

1. Auto-assign is fine, though it won't takes skills into account so you can always fine tune that to balance out troublemakers/diplomats, make sure Research skills are in Research, etc. Rarely if a guy is A in, say, Intel and Research and has +Shotgun Research, he may get put in Intel. He could even be C in Intel, B in Research (with an important Skill too) but if Research is full of A Research, he could get put in Intel since it's the next best place for him. So overall it's fine and it won't really damage you, but you can likely usually find small ways to manually improve.

2. Sort of touched on that... you need to manually balance out Troublemakers and Diplomats. It's not that big of a deal but if you find people with Skills getting sick, you may want to kick out some Troublemakers or at least see if every platform has some Diplomats.

3. Just means they're new... it disappears quickly after a bit of time.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Very helpful to know.

One last question: if I manually assign some folks (to avoid trouble, etc.) and then auto-assign, I'm guessing my manual changes get overwritten?

Just had my first Quiet encounter. I'm plodding through slowly but surely. Such a great game to get lost in.

yeah auto-assign will fully re-assign everyone.

actually, even if you only manually assign, sometimes Miller will still move people around if they're 'poorly' placed (e.g. if you put a low Combat, high R&D guy into Combat because you want to play as him... Miller will move him back later on his own). but i think he only does this if they're not under Direct Contract.

e.g. I like to play as the the Mission 5 R&D guy... Miller used to always put him back on R&D after a few missions, but it hasn't happened in a long time -- either a patch tweaked it or it's cuz he's 'locked' now. (i'm guessing the latter... just i've never actually tested it to be certain).

Thanks again. Okay, locking them with Direct Contract makes sense.
And wow, I didn't know you could play as the staff! Just Googled it and it sounds cool. So much to look forward to :D

Why is Snake starting to grow a little horn?

Not sure if this is a spoiler by this point or not but tagging for others anyway.
If you kill enough enemies in certain ways or (and more commonly) create a nuke it contributes to a hidden stat most call Demon Points. Snake's horn will grow longer in addition to his body eventually becoming constantly covered in blood. Demon Points can be reduced by doing 'good' deeds to collect Heroism Points like saving the children in mission 18, or disarming nukes.

I was not confronted with any nuke yet, but I am only at mission 12. Then it probably is because I fucked up the last missions and was a bit violent lol.

Visit the animal conservation platform repeatedly, rescue children soldiers (preferably via chopper), dismantle nukes you've stolen from fobs, or do the refuge combat deployment to get get rid of demon points

Just completed that refugee deployment. Back to a clean Snake. Probably had a billion demon points. lol

It's fine. The threshold of demon snake has now increased for you, so it will be harder to achieve

Is this tied to special events or just greater heroism? Never heard of the threshold increasing before, but I haven't been keeping current with the updates.

It's always been like that. There's a great post on Reddit describing the science of demon points.

Now that I'm about a year removed from the game's launch I decided to start playing again from a brand new save. Disabled most of the HUD (objective markers, waypoints, reflex) and have opted not to use the tranq gun or similar weapons. Makes for quite the different experience, enjoying it a lot so far. Still not a fan of the micromanagement elements of Mother Base and I really wish items were distributed throughout the levels such that going full OSP was a viable option.

well luckily you can go subsistence mode on every mission, in theory. So don't bother developing other weapons or mother base. And before anyone asks, yes, you can just use the tanks to beat Sahenlanthropus. I've done it. On extreme.

how do you start a new save without deleting your old one?

Even so the item spread is such that I'll just be stuck using the same common stuff you find. It's not like any of the cool stuff you can develop is sprinkled around the maps for you to find and use on the fly like it would be in previous Metal Gear games. Kind of defeats the point.

You don't. I deleted my save :p

Bought this game now as it is on sale...played some hours and want to share my experience as a full Metal Gear Solid newcomer (only played the a little bit of the first one).

Well to start of rude: The prologue sequence was really terrible. One long boring script of crawling through a hospital with supernatural stuff going on. There was no logic and i somehow thought that series tried to be realistic. So i almost gave up as i thought this is how the whole game will be (burning whales, burning man, telekinesis stuff... really not into such stuff).

But i dragged myself through it and arrived in Afghanistan. Suddenly it was like a different game. There was finally REAL Gameplay and i was impressed how well the game was as i took out the first outpost. Music, atmosphere, set design, gunplay all amazing.

But then again after a mission that fog with those annoying jumping enemies suddenly appeared again and i dont know why but it killed my joy with the game again. So i had to drag myself through those fog scenes and was relieved when the game stopped bothering me with that cheap supernatural story sequences. It is still a first impression and i see the potential of that game. I just wish the story would be less "artistic" (i know that is a case of personal taste).

Anyway back to the game ;)

The games are always based in the "real world" but with a fantasy setting

Gameplay gets more fun as you get better equipment. This whole game is a mindfuck though

How likely is it for an FOB to be attacked? It's tempting to invest in an FOB since it will quickly build up my team compared to paying for the more expensive Mother Base improvements, but I don't want to worry about it getting attacked.

Depends probably on the quality of your staff for the most part at this point. At least on the PC side it seems that way, gets annoying even with just the hardcore and cheaters left.

The ps4 is the only active place for fobs, and a fanbase is dwindling. You're fine.

My FOBs were attacked twice this past month. And that's only because my espionage score was raised from 0 because I played the FOB events. Both times my security team had a successful defense.

I was just wondering, after 9 years of coma why on earth is there bandage on the amputated arm? That'd have healed way back in the first months, from that point this is just simply unnatural.

So I ended up buying a whole bunch of platforms for my FOB and I don't believe anyone has ever successfully infiltrated my base, but I think people have tried since I'm consistently #1 or #2 on that PF leaderboard thingy. So I'm not really sure what's going on, but I think I'm doing well!

I don't really understand what's going on with this game. Why is literally half of the game running back and forth between the mission zone and landing zones/ waiting in a helicopter? 70% of the "open world" is wasted space and when I destroy anti-air radars, all it does is add a landing zone right in the middle of the base? Why would I use that?

Game just feels really time-inefficient so far.

Suppose it depends how often you leave the field... Sometimes I'll go 5-6 hours without going back to the ACC or Mother Base. A lot of missions can be ended by leaving the hot zone on foot, and never going back to the ACC.

Taking out AA let's you call in air support more safely, too, I guess... it's pretty OP when the enemy has no AA/no rockets. Having a LZ by a base I suppose does make a lot of missions easier .... e.g. A Hero's Way it's faster to call in the heli to the LZ beside the base with the AA gone and load up the captain (if you're going non-lethal) than to carry or drive him out. Assuming you're taking everyone else out =p

Also you can use the closer LZ as a drop-in point too do fun stuff like this lol

That said, air support is usually overpowered so whether AA is there or not wouldn't usually affect my play anymore.

As for going to LZs/ACC so much, maybe just try stay in the field longer... Most of the missions, especially the less important story ones, you can end by just walking out. You can air drop different load outs; different buddies; supplies. Only reason you really ever need to leave the field is for the story or to customize new guns. You can airdrop almost any other inventory change.

I have a question about the ending:

Is the cut-scene following the defeat of Sahelanthropus the main ending of the game? And then after that there's some more missions to do, but those don't work towards another main ending, right? I've done all the missions except for a few of the [EXTREME] verisons of previous missions. Basically...am I done with the story? lol I'm sure this question has been asked a lot.

It's the end of its main story arc. That said, there's a handful of pretty important story events and conclusions still.

It's a bit like Peace Walker if you played it and can recall the Chapters 1-4 and then the bonus 'end game' stuff in Chapter 5.

No. You have to unlock the last few missions to see the final ending. Very similar to PeaceWalker.

Sorry for the bump, but has anyone had frame drop issues with an AMD card? I keep getting random brief frame drops by like 20 FPS. I've tinkered with the settings and nothing seems to be working. Drivers are updated as well.

I am now at mission 3 of MGS5. Really not feeling the stealth yet. Get spotted from miles away all the time.

Then you won't enjoy the rest of the game. I personally love what's there and wish the enemy's line of sight was even further than what it is.

Are you sure you're doing the basics right? Running or walking around normally makes it very easy for enemies to spot you.

Crouch walking makes it tougher for them to see you and crawling on the ground is the safest way. So crawling is the best for maximum stealth.

Make sure to move behind objects when possible and also that the camo Venom is wearing is appropriate for the environment you are in (which will make it noticeably harder for enemies to spot you).

BadWolf

The basics i do right yeah. Just not feeling it atm. But will try the tips also. Thanks.

Also make sure to use the horse, Venom can hang from the side of it and you can move pretty openly in the enemy's line of vision without them getting alerted. It's excellent for stealth.

The camo outfits are a bit funny in that the sneak camo for example is less useful in the outdoor maps since you can be spotted at great distances, whereas I've worn sand-colored camo in the Afghan map and been mere feet from enemies nearly looking at me with no cover without being spotted.

So how's MGO on PC, dead or full of hackers? Thinking of double dipping for the PC version during the Steam Summer sale.

No, you are still missing very important stuff. Keep playing.

EDIT: Nevermind, just noticed the date.

First, I'm a huge fan of the Metal Gear series. As a result, I feel great shame that I'm just now getting around to playing MGSV. Since I haven't played a MGS game in years, I totally suck at it. Can't even complete Ground Zeroes yet.

Getting a little frustrated in GZ. Can't find Paz. I listened to the tapes, and I went to the place that sounded like the gate in the tape, but I didn't find anything there. I've been interrogating a bunch of soldiers and all I've learned is the location of ammo and a sniper rifle. Oh and the location of security cameras. Am I supposed to interrogate a specific soldier to unlock the location of Paz? Would prefer a simple yes/no to this as I would like to figure it out still.
