Metaphor ReFantazio Enters the Top 5 Selling Games on Steam

What? What part of the game is woke?

I’m completely lost what “woke” even means anymore.
Game's story seems to be about diversity and tolerance and some people don't gel too well with those concepts.

Calling it woke because of that is going waaaay too far imo, although I guess it can depend on how those themes are handled. Knowing Atlus and coming from SMT V, I bet they'll be handled properly tho.

Lot of Japanese media tackle politics.

Have you watched this

This show is tackles issues in Japanese work place and Japanese politics but it doesn't make the show "woke"

I'm not saying "woke" culture doesn't exist, when you watch modern Disney and Marvel movies its pretty obvious but calling every little thing "woke" not helping the cause....in fact it will make it worse.

Heh, no I haven't watched it but I've got it recommended a few times. Probably should give it a shot.

Agree 100%.

It will be forgotten in a month with total sales numbering 1 million.

Let’s get serious here.

You might be surprised. Persona 5 received similar acclaim and eventually sold around 4 million, iirc. What is it about Metaphor that makes you think that this game is going to be forgotten in a month? More than likely the game will receive a few end of year awards.

It's especially funny when a lot of these people are crying on Steam and Twitter about how Metaphor is woke and Atlus fell to the woke agenda lol

I'd love to see folks point to specific examples in the game of what they believe to be "woke".

4 million on all platforms?

I was talking about PC only.

To be honest I am glad there's a strong normie filter on these games because I can only imagine the amount of triggered outrage farming videos if this was a more mainstream game. As soon as they started talking about racism I was already seeing the youtube thumbnails in my mind.

Im not interested in this game but if this shows turn based is still in demand then this is good.
Square should make XVII turn based.

Huh.
I havent seen the game, it might be those localizers doing their . . .translations. I need to study the game more to understand what is going on.

it does have a few localization shenanigans, though not the woke kind but the retarded millennial dialogue one
This is not the place to discuss this, but two quick comments:

First, I can read Japanese, and the English here is much more fun to me. The literal translation is like something a computer would say.

Second, I highly suggest watching/listening to this podcast, especially if you are a "literalist" with an open mind.

Dude i've followed jp-english translations for decades in the LN scene, i know full well you can't always make literal translations. That doesn't mean you can just completely reinterpret a character and its manner of speech because you thought it was 'fun'.

Grifters need new shit to shit on every fucking week, how are they going to make their trashy YT videos otherwise?

Yes. Yes, you can.

Again, I highly recommend that podcast featuring a 30-year veteran video game translator.

PS: There is no “re-interpretation”. Modern games from major publishers have their localizations made in concert with the Japanese team (marketing or otherwise) and are fully sanctioned.

Turn based haters haven't even tried the genre to begin with, they will never like it this way.
Nothing worse to me than a turn based hater. There is a level of obtuseness there. Something that screams "I don't read" and "I don't have culture." Something classless and cheap. Low end. We are just different people. Do they also hate chess? I'm sure they don't know how to play, lol. We are dealing with people who hate board games including D&D here. People who hate card games. The only reason they game at all is they invented technology to allow them to compete with fast twitch reaction time. Simple games based on how fast your knee jumps when you tap it with a hammer. Low brow games based on human reaction time rather than strategy. How high should we hold their esteem?

Players buying on PC instead of consoles isn't something shocking.
What, lol?

It's not shocking, it's just something good to see bro. That's why this was posted. Nobody is like shocked something sold well on steam. That's some weird PC defensiveness.

Don't worry, I don't shit on PC on here anymore after The Squad ate me alive last time.

yes, i know:
Blue haired localizer: "we should totally remove all pronouns in this sentence because assuming genders is offensive!"
jp marketing team: "uh, ok, i have no clue what you're talking about but if you say its like that."

They have to admit their limited experience with games and want more from them, there has to be a need for wanting more otherwise they'll keep running in circles.

I ended up preordering the game, despite its technical flaws.
A game shouldn't be judged solely on this, if gaming wants to be considered a grown-up medium and a true expression of art, the technical proficiency of games should become less relevant.
I understand that it is somewhat comfortable to talk about these things because they are less subjective than other aspects of the game.
I have to say that I'll welcome an update that removes the AA and fixes the framerate, but these issues won't dictate if I buy a game or not.
P.S Persona got big because they don't care as much as Final Fantasy on graphical fidelity, and focus on other things instead (this doesn't apply to FF7 Rebirth, where they found the perfect balance, IMO).

Sadly I agree. It is more of political climate, even if majority does not want twisted woke agenda in the west, but the political climate is still pushing or forcing this agenda, then there is no hope.

There have been no forcing any agenda on Publishers to be "woke".

Anyways, I don't care if FF is turn based or action, I enjoy both.

But I am absolutely baffled why they haven't made an attempt at a modern turn based game. Persona, Yakuza and now Metaphor are doing really well. You really can't say it won't sell when you haven't tried it. I'd love to see a modern turn based game with that FF budget.

You couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m going to leave it at that. If folks like yourself wish to spread misinformation instead of listening to experts in the localization industry, I can do no more.

They should carry the FF7R combat system forward. It's sublime.
