Metro 2033 |OT| Fear the Future

well i got it for the 360. I sacrificed superior graphics for a couch and 7.1. Since it is a atmosphere heavy game i hope i made the right choice.

Couple hours in already...not really a fan thus far.

- The chapters/levels are incredibly short, definitely not "epic" like I was expecting.
- Graphics are OK, but not mindblowing. Killzone 2 is several times more impressive in almost every area. Seems like a high end Unreal engine game to me.
- Don't really like the button mapping and it's not customizable.
- Enemy design is about as generic as you can get.
- I wish my character spoke. He talks to himself during the loading screens and then shuts up around other characters. Takes me out of the experience.
- Not nearly enough interactivity with the world, especially in the "home bases".
- Items/ammo are confusing to me. I'm never sure when to use a med pack. I'm afraid to use too much ammo since it's also currency. I have no real idea what currency is worth and if I should save stock up more ammo of a certain gun type or just use whatever.

Yes, I've read the manual. It's one of the worst I've seen for a modern game.

Sounds, music and weapons are pretty sweet though.

What the hell! I was thinking of getting this on Steam but all I can find are trailers. No pre-order, nothing. Yet Amazon have it for the 19th. Steam really seem to have been making some mistakes recently. Looks like they won't be getting my money this time.

You in UK? It was removed from the UK store a couple of weeks back and hasn't shown up since. Still on all the other stores though.

See it and buy it front page there.

Anyone else having problems with the Gamestop shotgun bonus? I entered my code and it went through but said it was unable to download it at this time.

Is that the Reds metro level with all the sneaking or dying because you can't really do anything else place?

Probably spent 2 hours on that fucking level, but I noticed a few times that I missed a good chance to dodge a bullet or two AND on the way out, I found
a tunnel leading to the exit
, so we obviously missed something.

Yeah, yeah, no PC tech talk.....

PhilB over at B3D has details of how to properly tweak the config file (there's two files that need changing) and its possible to enable global illumination without totally raping the framerate, details here:

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1408399&postcount=224

Think I'll end up using stock high settings + obj motion blur + AAA + some global illumination.
i am already regretting this fucking pc purchase, should have gone with the 360 one, damnit. Config this config that.

Nobody is making you play with the config. Turn on DX10 and leave it on High Settings and you are already a ways ahead of the console versions. Enjoy the game.

This, seriously. High settings is completely great looking. Onto story/gameplay though, I need help on "Cursed":
How the fuck do I close the vent/where do I even go? I sealed the left tunnel already

I am actually digging this game so far. Got in the 360. It is so atmospheric and I liked the somewhat interactivity with things in the little "home areas"

only thing really bothering with me is the shooting. when you shoot in this game, you really don't feel the impact from the gun. its so quiet and just doesn't feel polished. Like the shooting mechanic itself is fine..I guess it's just the sound and impact of the gun, you just dont really feel it like in other games.

but that is the only thing that has bothered me so far...but other than that...its a very story driven fps pretty much. and the atmosphere is great.

Whip out your map and follow it. I got confused too. You need to pick up an item, then take it elsewhere before that level is over.

Quite possibly the worst post I've read on GAF all day. Congrats.

game is great so far. I've got the 360 version and the thing is beautiful. Nowhere near killzone 2 beautiful, but definitely among the better looking 360 games available. Very atmospheric. The shooting feels very satisfying to me. so far...2 thumbs way up.

Ok, starting to appreciate the game a bit more.

- Firefights with other humans >>>>> gaggles of melee monsters.
- I think it's hilarious how useless the home areas are, but also awesome how crazy they are with life. It's so loud and bustling with people...and everyone is yelling at the top of their lungs. It reminds me of a high school cafeteria.
- Shooting with these ramshackle guns is so satisfying because they look, feel and sound like they're pieced together from scrap. The muzzle flash on some of them is so crazy you can't even see anything in the crosshair view after firing your first shot. Toss in 10 dog creatures flying at you and you've got some insanely intense moments. Long reload times and small clips are also killer.

Yeah, the firefights with humans are just so awesome. Throw in the gunsmoke, fog and just general atmospheric effects and it's just awesome.

you know, I didnt even think about it like that....that is so true...that changes my whole opinion on the guns...at first I was bothered like "wtf" but what you say puts it all into perspective.

genius.

I just lost a shitload of progress because the game put me in a place designed to give me no clue as to where I needed to go. Then it saved right after my guy took of his helmet (due to the filters running out) and began to suffocate.

My impressions thus far (about 2-3 hours into the 360 version):

~ The game is definitely not close to Killzone 2-level visuals on the 360, it is however one of the better looking games on the 360 (the lighting being a highlight....pun intended). Metro is far from an ugly duckling, but after looking at the drool-worthy shots in the PC screenshot thread, it's readily apparent the sacrifices they had to make in order to get a steady performance.

~ I'm echoing pretty much everyone else here; fights against the monsters = zzzzzzzzz, fights against the human characters = fuckawesome because....

~ ...The sound is outstanding. The firefights in the tunnels against the bandits are extremely fun, the guns are become loud and obnoxious due to the reverb', and the muzzle flashes sometime become very large due to the lack of light, overall a very realistic and gritty feeling to'em.

~ Voice-acting is solid, and the friendly camps are full of life.

~ The attention to detail is excellent, in one area
After Bourbon gets captured buy the bandits
I started to try and stealthily make my way through the bandit camp. I had my light turned off and blew out a near-by lantern while the bandits were talking with each other, then I just reloaded my weapon; and the sound of me reloading alerted them to my position.

I just appreciated that you're not even safe reloading if you want to be stealthy :lol

I ended my playing tonight on the "Anomaly" chapter, thus far Metro has definitely been worth the gamble. Easily the dark-horse FPS of this year in my opinion, thumbs up :)

Fuck do they not want you to have ammo in this game.

After a rather intense battle all the way to this one metro station, I found a
kid all alone next to a bunch of dead mutants and his dead uncle who apparently killed them all and he is now on my back and pointing at where the mutants are coming from while I carry him through these crazy corpse ridden tunnels.
So fucking cool. I love the feel of this game. I really enjoy the mutant fights when it's an invasion-esque scenario. Feels epic. But the random straggler monsters are a chore.

And all of this is with me pretty much at zero ammo, and living off of what I find on the field. Even MID FIGHT. Fucking hell.

The human combat is really good so far. Impressed by the tech (lighting, textures, level of detail, ect) minus some of the art. 360 version is more than solid so far.

I'm really glad this has gotten some buzz along side some pretty big releases this month. I love how unpredictable the game is, I keep hitting portions where I'm watching a cutscene and don't even know it. The opening of the game and the hand car sequence are phenomenal examples of great FPS design.

Bravo to the 4A crew, game number 3 to hit my short list for GOTY.

Man, I had this whole fight planned out and was ready to bust some balls. Toss a stick of tnt out, wait for my mark. . . Boom, I come out guns blazing and explode the instant I step outside.

My goddamn bomb ignited another bomb on a corpse right next to me.

Amazing game. Then, an ESCORT MISSION? That's the first mission of the game? He dies, game over? You have to be kidding me...

Well, after finally getting this absolute brain dead-AI dumbass through a tunnel, after about 20 tries (some of which were falls to death through small cracks between boards... another fantastic design decision) I get to the end.

And guess what? I must have accidentally put my "money" rounds into my SMG, and I fired away all the money I collected up to this point. Well, let me just reload to a previous check... oh, right. It autosaved. So now I'm penniless.

Let's make ammo also money! And let's make it so you can FIRE AWAY YOUR MONEY, and then autosave the game so you can never have it back once you realized that you accidentally shot all your money. What the fuck, seriously.

This is some of the worst design I've ever seen in a game.

You blame your mistake on the game? Cmon now. Anyway, I found the best way to conserve ammo is to just use the knife. I use the knife a lot on Hardcore. Anyway, This game has some promise. I think I'm gonna restart though (not that far). I don't understand the mechanics at all. The shooting in this game is fine as well, anyone who thinks it's bad has some serious problems.

Using too much ammo? When I reloaded my weapon, it put my -money- into my gun. In the heat of battle, how am I supposed to tell this is happening? I had tons of crap ammo, but it put money into my gun because I accidentally held the reload button for half a second too long while flailing around trying to strafe away from the small cracks in the floor so I didn't fall to death.

And there is no way I could have used my "knife half the time" when the braindead AI partner was being swarmed by 5 creature things and would die after 3 seconds.

Me too. There's no tutorial and the manual sucks so you kinda learn as you go.

Autosaving will probably bight everyone's ass in this game at least a couple times.

The other option is to make money separate and when you run out of ammo then you are just SOL. I like being able to shoot my money if I have to. Kind of makes the whole game more interesting. It's a clever way to get around what pisses me off about Borderlands, a bunch of ammo types AND money is just irritating and then you game your way around the system by grinding to stack yourself.

Metro gives your bullets a value and then makes you deal with that. I can see how it would piss you off, but I relish that design decision to challenge me, rather than coddle.

They should make it a lot harder to put your money in your gun. Instead, they used the exact same button for normal ammo reload. There should be a big red glowing dot and an alarm klaxon firing off to let you know you're shooting money.

Now, I can either replay the first two hours of the game (and have to go through that absolutely awful escort mission again), or just count all the money I had up to this point as gone and hope to god I can find enough bullets to get me through the rest of the game.

And also hope I don't accidentally hold reload for too long again and have the game autosave. Which I can definitely see happening again.

Loves Robotech S1
Those high-grade money bullets also deal a lot more damage, so there's that. It took me a while as well before I realized that holding reload swapped ammo but there was no severe damage to my funds thankfully. Has anyone found any pre-war guns yet? From the interviews they're supposed to be the best in the game.

I'm also of the mindset that loves all the little things to keep track off. Worrying about ammo/money, gas mask damage/filters, keeping your flashlight charged up, etc, all make for such an interesting experience. So many games just opt to strip away all of these little bumps in the name of accessibility and streamlining. This kind of mindset makes many games these days so damn boring.

EDIT: This escort mission you're complaining about...are you talking about Bourbon? I didn't even realize he could die. Hell, I was under the impression that he was protecting me! :lol

Same :lol I had no idea he could die (even when I have the auto-aim he was a better shot than I was ;) )

Also, I hate to be "that guy" but the PC version currently holds an 87 on Metacritic, and 360 version of Metro is holding a respectable 80. Not too shabby 4A :)

*edit: Yeah, there aren't many reviews out yet and most of the ones that are come from mostly random Euro-gaming sites, but still :D

Escort mission? I've just been running around killing things with or without a partner. And the high-grade ammo thing seemed extremely clear to me. Hold it down to swap. Oh, and it's fucking glowing.

After getting ahold of some better weapons, I'm finding the gunplay a lot less annoying. Pretty fun now.

Swapping between stealthiness and strategically placed bomb-rambo mode is fun as fuck.

Yeah, no offense, but if he's dying and your running out of ammo you're really, really not very good at this game.

:lol Yeah. I have love/hate with the gas mask stuff right now. It's cool how the masks get very foggy/full of moisture after a while until you change filters. But annoying as hell fighting beasts in corridors with it on. :p

Fightings humans > beasts, definitely. A lot more satisfying. Take note 4A!.

Man easy setting is too easy. I think I'm more than halfway through(played for like 6 hours straight) so I may as well finish this playthrough before moving up to normal.

Well I could change the setting at any time but hrrm.

BTW Love the throwing knives.

-Wish I could tone down the auto-aim. Does it really need to track moving enemies? I'm not that bad of a shot.
-Human fights are way more interesting than mutant fights. Using cover, lighting, stealth, all that neat stuff. With mutants I get gang-raped by meatshields.
-Looks great except for the character models. Then again maybe I'm just spoiled by ME2 which I'm playing concurrently.

This is how I feel. (minus the weapon/ammo stuff, i get that)

A few hours in, and it's pretty boring. And the sound design is terrible, I nearly muted the game near the beginning when I was looking at the weapon shop because everyone was yelling and I couldn't concentrate at all. I shouldn't be able to hear people that loudly at the end of rooms.

And why aren't the background NPCs subtitled?
I'm playing in Russian with English text like the devs suggested, but they didn't bother to translate anything except for the few main characters.
The way they wrote the subtitles is badly done as well.

You've wronged me GAF, you've wronged me!

I'll finish it though.
PS3 is broken anyway.
