Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Of all of the games announced, this is one where I've probably re-watched the trailer the most.

I'm just amazed a new 2D Metroid is coming out after waiting so long

Why the fuck is this not coming out on switch?

A lot of folks ditched their 3ds for the switch (myself included), and we don't get a fucking 2d Metroid?

They are really trying to make me buy a 3ds for like the 3rd time huh.

You posted about it twice in the span of like 30 seconds, so I’d say you’re likely to.

I really thought it looked strong, and even average developers are capable of really amazing work under Nintendo (Next level games for example).

That's definitely a far cry from Castlevania Mirror of Fate (or whatever it was called). I don't think I even wanted to start playing that after the demo.

There were rumors years ago that MS was working on a Metroid prototype but they shot it down emphatically.

I guess they lied.

so I have to ask if you plan on avatar changing when MP4 gets footage.
Or when MSR releases? (Too soon?)

I really hope the counter is used throughout the whole game, and not just an early on thing. Though I also don't want it too be too overpowering. Will be a mighty fine line for "perfection" (as close as one can get, anyways), but I have high hopes that it will stay fun throughout the game, at least.

Looks dope, after all these years of waiting

Not interested in playing a 2D Metroid game that runs at only 30 fps. Sorry Mercury Steam.

Because there's a HD Metroid being developed for the Switch releasing sometime late 2018-2019.
Come on! That's flimsy as hell, when you see FE Warriors coming out on the 3ds and switch, even though it just got Echoes.

Either way, already preordered the SE, and I would doubl dip if it gets launched on switch.

"I'll make any excuse to justify not buying a new Metroid so that i can continue complaining about the lack of Metroid" - a lot of Metroid 'fans' on gaf.

It almost makes me think it should just die off as a series, since there will never be anything that lives up to a Metroid fan's disapproving gaze.

I've also heard people complain because Prime 4 wasn't announced as a Retro project, like they are the holy protectorate of the Metroid franchise or something.

They're becoming a cliche.

They seemed to put a lot of emphasis on the counter... I hope it's not ripe for abuse.

Like it's so OP that you just wait to use it and then open up the "belly" of the enemy and shoot at the weak spot.

Showed some MGR style combat with the bosses, where countering is required.
Looks like you will need to get all the practice you can.

Wow that's really reassuring, I heard MercurySteam and checked out.

Honestly Nintendo has a really good track record of getting good games out of usually mediocre studios. Whether it's better oversight, more lenient deadlines and a greater willingness to delay if necessary, or what I don't know, but Nintendo is great at it

The treehouse footage really alleviated all my fears of it being slow and clunky like that Castlevania. Everything seems to have that classic weight and speed from what I saw.

These are the people that did AMR2, right? That should be endorsement enough. And frankly, props to Nintendo for bringing them on board if so.

I am so fucking thirsty for new 2D Metroid.

So happy it's coming out soon too. Would've preferred a Switch version, but I'll take what I can get.

What? No, not at all. Where did you hear that? Mercury Steam is known for the recent Castlevania games.

The game looked excellent and from someone who has completed Super Metroid again in the last month and is currently replaying Zero Mission
in the stealth sections currently
it felt like I would expect Metroid to feel.

I also thought it looked much much better graphically when I watched the trailer on my 3DS compared to the treehouse stream for whatever reason.

As much as I really don't want to dust off and play my 3DS and wished this was on Switch, yes, Metroid:Samus Returns just looks too damn good to pass on.

It'll be my swan song for the 3DS.

Yeah, I called bullshit on this game immediately, based on it being a 3DS title, and being developed by Mercury Steam.

I very quickly realized that I was wrong.

That counter mechanic does indeed look excellent.

I mentioned that in the other thread that it makes so much sense, yet it's something I never realized was missing. Other M tried it, sort of, and clearly screwed it up (and made it more for cinematic flair than utility). I hope they can find some way to introduce a melee tactic to Metroid Prime.

My quick and dirty Photoshop effort
Lol

I didn't know that people were complaining about MP4 not being announced as Retro. Come on guys. I'm so glad I watched the conference with friends rather than with GAF. Sounds like a lot of negativity to... Well just about everything from all companies, coming from multiple people.

Aside from the obvious Next Level Games, one could definitely see this after what happened to Dennis Dyack and Silicon Knights after they parted ways with Nintendo.

Fans please support this game so Nintendo can start giving a shit about Metroid again

don't want another 10 years of darkness that we had since Prime 3

So hypothetically, will Nintendo port this to Switch while we wait for MP4? :(
Projects like this, Hey Pikmin, Ever oasis, probably have a set budget that would be outside of the realm of a Switch port. If it was a solely internally developed game, maybe. But otherwise don't count on it.

Haven't played a Metroid since Super Metroid, excited to have two opportunities to inundate myself in the series outside of Samus being my Brawl/Smash 4 main.

This having good impressions is great, as I needed that extra bit to dust off my 3DS, which I've needed to do anyway :(

I wasn't on board at first but once I saw the game play I was. Glad to hear good impressions, I'll buy it for sure. I'm still getting hours of play out of my 3ds, glad there are more games coming out.

I just realized we're getting Zelda, Metroid, and Mario games, all in 2017.

Like, what.

And yeah, this looked really good on Treehouse Live.
