MGS5 - "Snake won't really speak much at all. More of a silent protagonist."

Doubt it has much to do with Kiefer or creating "an extension of the player" but more of Kojima just experimenting to make Big Boss a silent badass type.

If that's the case, it's just another example of fans having more respect for the fiction than Kojima ever has. If he wants to make a badass silent protagonist, make a game with one. Don't turn a previously talkey character into something he isn't...

But I know, MGS = Money and a long leash. So he does what he wants.

OK I think people are forgetting this is a Japanese game, and the Japanese version with no Kiefer won't have any additional lines. And I somehow doubt Kojima would compromise the game in that way just to have Kiefer in for the Western release.

I am also disappointed.
I hate silent protagonist since you can't immerse yourself to their world and the interaction with other characters.
Only well-written games like CT/HL have success with a mute, but the overall majority have failed so badly.

I really hate the "we want the protagonist to be quiet/silent so as to feel like an extension of the player" bullshit line that gets repeated much of the time. I don't know how anyone else feels but I absolutely feel no more closer to a protag that's silent than I do one that's voiced.

Ironically enough I felt very little connection to my guy in Dragon Age Origins for example but I felt like I was Shepard in Mass Effect.

Let the developers do what they want. The difference here is the MGS is known for being a talkative series and it's straying away from that all of a sudden.

He wouldn't, which is why that narrative is bullshit. Dude wouldn't compromise on his vision at all, especially when it comes to dialogue he wants in the game.

He isn't mute and we've seen him interacting physically and verbally with other characters already. I'm not sure why Konami are so keen to push the 'silent protagonist' label, it's been talked about a lot since early 2014 at least.

Snake never had much to say if you discount questioning the last word of someone else's sentence.

Plus, the Mad Max comparison isn't a bad one. Max is clearly a character, he just can't be arsed to talk for most of the film because he doesn't need to. He still talks when it's needed.

Plus, when you think about it, most open-world games have silent protagonists for 90% of the game.

Jesus, Kojima, the point wasn't just taking out the repeating phrases in the form of question and that's it, it was also replacing it with something great.

Although I like Kefier's voice a lot but I think this is the natural evolution of cinematic and story telling, instead on endless cutscenes with a lot of dialog we can know a lot about the story and characters from their face emotions, voice acting and all the environment. < TLOU is a great example

all characters can contribute and explain the plot instead of characters reading long dialogs after each other like a play.

good job Kojima.

Ugh. MGS is one of those series that I don't want Snake to be a representation of me or whatever. I want him to be Snake. I've got Zelda and Mario for that shit. Dissapointed.

Well, He's definitely not a silent protagonist. I mean he has lines in ground zeroes. If you're creative choice is to have a silent protagonist to suck people into the game and make them feel like they're snake.... then doesn't it all just come tumbling down as soon as he says anything?

I think they're either getting ahead of a potential criticism, or kojima is doing the kojima thing and we're all about to get mind fucked.

Zelda, Portal, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, all would have been worse with a speaking protagonist.

I'm really glad Kojima is coming over to the winning side on this debate. Quiet down protagonists. Let the NPCs do the talking.

Aside from TES, none of those games are nearly as story-heavy or cinematic as MGS. I admit, I hadn't thought of the games you mentioned, but the silent protag does work in them because they aren't cinematic at all. Mute protagonist just doesn't work in cinematic games.

I actually quite pleased about this. I really didn't like Sutherland as Snake/Big Boss so the less he talks the better. After Far Cry 3, I'm quite ready for player characters to keep quiet.

Yeah...i fucking hate silent protagonists, so striving to be more like that is NOT a good thing. I liked Metal Gear the way it was, where Snake spoke.

I'd like to point out that between GZ and the trailers we've seen, Kiefer plays at least three characters. Not saying these characters have a ton of lines either, but let's have some context before we start throwing out "lol couldn't pay kiefer".

BB
Medic in the chopper (voice is altered)
Ishmael (from TPP trailer)

Silent protagonists are generally uninteresting and dumb, hopefully Kojima will revolutionize the idea.

The new "handheld rotating camera" type of directing also puts me off... I've never been that much cautiously hyped about a MGS game before.

What is a Metal Gear game with no Codec banter? I'm gonna miss all of those great anecdotes and bits of trivia :(

I think there's a time and place for the chatty codec scenes that play in MGS.

For example, I think a more natural implementation for these conversations is actually on a mobile device with headphones. Once a codec scene kicks in, closing the lid of your 3DS (for example) and listening to the (basically) radio drama is a perfect way to experience these story sequences while you're on the go, I think.

From a gameplay perspective, having your team chime in from time-to-time in real time is also a natural evolution of the codec.

The only thing I'd wish they'd implemented was for the player to select a weapon in their selection wheel, press the "codec" button while having it selected and then have their support member rattle on about it.

Would seem to make sense to me.

Now that I think about it, how awesome would it be if modders recreate the MGS games on PC with MGSV?

So awesome.

I'm not sure that i like what i read, i love conversation in MGS series and I was critical about Kieffer Snake from the Afghanistan videos, I hope it will be more talky than that.

We can't say much yet, We'll have to wait for the final game to judge if it was a good call or not.

THEN WHY THE FUCK DID YOU GET AN ACTOR WITH A MEMORABLE VOICE

I dont think it's all that memorable. I didn't make it past 24 season 2.

Pretty sure TPP will have tapes like Peace Walker, only you should be able to play them while you're actually playing the game.

I demand more 1980s level mix tapes to expose me to more period appropriate music I havent heard before. I want to listen to Paz's mixtape of Sid Vicious and Sopwith Camel.

I'm sure he will talk in tense moments and important cutscenes. Other than that it doesn't really matter.

Besides..this is Kojima. He has trolled his fanbase for decades now. And people fall for this shit EVERY SINGLE TIME. Don't believe a word he says. People never learn.

For all you know Big Boss is probably not even the main character in the game.

I was already pretty disappointing that MGS4 had so few codec lines for the crazies that wanted to call people non-stop. So much of the charm of MGS comes out in those calls. It's a shame they're moving away from that stuff.

The "Snake" protagonist being an extension of the player was very well suited to MGS2, but the rest are about a character and his codec bants.

I can see Snake being less talkative in the game because of the more serious tone, which is fine, but I think having such an open game may have lead Kojima to thinking the player's actions are going to define Snake as a character during the story. That's not really what I want, but I guess the brilliance of Metal Gear is that the games are all so distinct. Maybe it will be a welcome change.
