MGSV: Ground Zeroes - Spoilers Thread - #TeamBowie

I could do with an option to turn off the exclamation points. Wonder how long I'd last before I wanted it back for nostalgia sake, though.

Chico's tapes are graphic but not tasteless at all imo. Chilling, disturbing and does a good job of scene/world building. Well executed imo.

Edit: I agree. People need to chill out about it being "in your face".

After seeing GZ I must say I agree with Kojima's decision to get rid of Hayter, with the serious human tone of the game Hayter's uh "comic book delivery/voice"(I'm not sure how to say what I mean) would feel out of place.

It's weird to me that people can listen to those optional audio tapes and think it was some try-hard 2edgyforme nonsense. It was a very mature insight, shit like that does happen and the tapes had the right mix of subtle suggestion and inference to let your mind fill in the blanks and realize the horror of it all, it isn't some torture porn crap and it's sad to me that some people can only see it that way.

And hey Kojima even got rid of the cardboard boxes and also wanted to get rid of the exclamation points over the guards heads. Ground Zeroes has shown Kojima really is taking this seriously, I wouldn't worry about some MGS4 trolling/sabotage taking place again.

I think Kojima "taking this seriously" after 25 years is the trolling/sabotage, if anything.

Kojima never said Ghost Babel or Mobile were canon. If he did there'd be little problem in including them (they are VR), but he hasn't said... so they're not.

Fuck it, make Ghost Babel canon, it's a great game. Ac!d 2 as well. I'd say I like them both more than Peace Walker on PSP (vastly prefer the HD version for controls + online play + framerate).

Just because the 1st 3 games had humorous elements doesn't mean they weren't taken seriously for what they were, for the story and themes being conveyed it allowed leeway for them to strike a balance between humor and drama.

MGS2 is still to this day one of the most ambitious games of all time, I'm pretty sure Kojima took that game seriously.

MGSV just happens to have a theme of race and revenge and the story being told just doesn't allow for the leeway of the past games.

MGS4 was a trolljob from start to finish.

Here's something interesting. The Diamond Dog logo has a Rhodesian Ridgeback on it. That's the Rhodesian equivalent of an American Foxhound (also a type of dog, it has only recently occurred to me).

And with FOXHOUND being already created in the canon according to Peace Walker (and referred to in timelines in earlier games) perhaps the Diamond Dogs are FOXHOUND? Maybe Big Boss trainees reassumes control of the organization following his coma?

Is the Deja Vu mission on the disc? If so, where the hell is it?

The platform specific side-missions are not easy to unlock. I think both missions are either unlocked by finishing the game on Hard or by finding all the XOF patches.
Neither task is simple.

I finished the main mission on Hard in 33 minutes. It's not hard at all. But that didn't unlock the last side mission (which, I assume, is the deja vu one).

Must be XOF patches then. There's 6 of them scattered throughout.
Don't take my word at face value though. It could be something else related to S ranking the game or side-quests.

Those missions are in the games though.

Like someone mentioned earlier, can anyone confirm the free roam mode? I assume it is unlocked at the same time as the extra ops missions (Raiden or Solid Snake missions and skins). Similarly, does anyone know if there are any other "skins" besides those two?

Good point. Even if that's not true I think we're probably teaming up with Cipher & FOXHOUND in this game at some point with Skull Face & XOF being the main antagonist (and being an enemy of Zero), considering by the 90s Big Boss and Miller go back to FOXHOUND for some time before Big Boss starts the Outer Heaven Uprising and that's where they meet Solid Snake.

But the Rhodesian Ridgeback thing is certainly suspicious, both MSF and the Outer Heaven Mercenaries had the Skull Emblems and both Diamond Dog and FOXHOUND have the same breed of dog. And it looks like Diamond Dogs was founded in Big Boss's absence as well:

How did Miller and company get the resources in those 9 years to create "Diamond Dogs" anyway? In Peace Walker didn't they need Cipher's funding to create Motherbase? I know Miller & Ocelot claim we're fighting "Cipher" in the Phantom Pain, but that's obviously not who ordered Skull Face & XOF to destroy Motherbase and who Miller's actual desire for revenge would be directed at, so either Miller misunderstands or maybe our strings are being pulled again because Miller & Ocelot know Big Boss wouldn't voluntarily cooperate with Zero.

The problem is that the horrible dialogue and cheesy voice acting make those scene completely manufactured. They're hard to be taken seriously.

Maybe they sound fine in japanese, though.

Welp, because I'm impatient as can be for this, I started searching around on youtube for recent vids. Someone had the balls to upload their play time. He's not great, but he's not like the streamers at least.

If anyone is interested.

Oh, also the quality is crap.

You were the one who said he was taking this seriously, implying he doesn't always. We don't know if MGS5 will retain any of the series humor at this point.

Noticed some stuff from different playthroughs, if you don't put Chico down near the landing zone it skips the cutscene where he shows Snake the tape, the tape just falls out of the helicopter instead and Snake picks it up.

You can unlock the cage of prisoners next to Chico, so that might have an effect on the first cutscene? Edit: done in cackhyena's link, no different unless you can carry them away.

vvv
nice easter eggs! must be more to find!

This is interesting...

Portable Ops gets the "I don't think I remember that one" response.

Yep.

YEP.

That's Kojima.

What were people saying earlier about Portable Ops being canon? Kojima despises that game. Why? Because he didn't write it. Despite it being better written that any Metal Gear game post-MGS3.

Portable Ops gets the "I don't think I remember that one" response.
Ouch. Once again, MPO gets treated like a redheaded stepchild Solidus Snake.

Just going back through the series and I want to echo a sentiment that a few others have brought up over the past year:

The more I hear of Sutherland, and the more I go back through Hayter-voiced Snake games, the more I'm glad Hayter is no longer the voice of Snake.

Hayter's "interesting" voice for Snake fit the over-dramatic, sometimes campy, always odd MGSs of the past. However, with GZ and PPs more grounded, realistic tone it was time for a change.

Hayter sounds fine in MGS 1-3, but in MGS4 and PW he sounds flat-out ridiculous.

Jump from MGS3 to PW and listen... it's almost cringe-worthy. At least in MGS4 the insanely gravelly voice works because of Old Snake, even if still sounds a bit ridiculous. PW is hard to play just because of Hayter's voice, in my humble opinion.

All of this said, I'd still love to hear Hayter voice a teenage/adult Solid Snake by the end of PP. Just come in closer to the Snake voice from MGS1-3, please.

Is there japanese voice track on the western releases? If that's the case, wow.

I SWEAR TO CHRIST WATCH THEIR FUNDING COME FROM BLOOD DIAMONDS

OH GOD I CAN SEE IT TOO, I CAN LITERALLY SEE THE CONVERSATION ON CODEC UNFOLD

Snake: Kaz...how are we able to afford all of this anyways?

Kaz: Snake while you were uh...away...the sale and trade of Diamonds has become rather lucrative. So we just got it from certain sources and then-

Snake: Certain sources? Kaz this sounds like we're involved in an illicit operation here.

Kaz: Haha, well isn't that the nature of all black ops anyways? Well you may not know, but the situation in the Congo has deteriorated rapidly and without much regulation obtaining diamonds has become rather simple. All a matter of coercion and intimidation

Snake: Desperate times I guess call for desperate measures.

Kaz: Our funding is a means to an end, the end of Cipher, don't lose sight of that goal Snake.

Kaz: War can be profitable, Snake. There are many exploitable sources.

Kaz: We've played by the rules before, Snake. We had courtesy. We had respect. And we lost. Years of hard work, good people, sunk to the ocean floor, all because we played by the rules. That won't happen to Diamond Dogs. I'll make sure of that, at any cost.

i read all of that in their voices and it didn't seem remotely out of place.

Wait, damn. How stupid am I? I didn't adjust the dialogue for Kiefer's Snake. Did you know he gets paid by the syllable?

Replace anything more the 3 words long with a "Kaz?", or a guttural groan.

That was beautiful.

so i've been thinking about the gdc trailer from last year

remember the part where snake looks out of the chopper? he seems to have the post-explosion injuries but not only is that shot not present in the ground zeroes ending at all, but now it has the context of those injuries happening after motherbase being sunk.

anybody else think the ending stopping short of showing the chopper crash is a fakeout? the fact it fades to white right before the crash is kinda weird.

then again maybe the shot in the gdc trailer was just for the purposes of showing off the facial animation, and the fading to white in the ending of ground zeroes was to ensure the phantom pain has a very front-loaded introduction by opening with the crash

Didn't it also look like the sky was getting brighter in that shot? Hmm. edit: maybe not, it's quite bright behind all the smoke too.
Good point about that, it's very strange given it looks like it's going out of control.
