Of course the main point of all of this is the only reason Microsoft entered into this idiotic deal in the first place was because it couldn't create games of its own. That's where the problem lies, not with a regulatory authority who doesn't think it's a good idea for one company to own so much of an industry.

There is a possibility now that one or both of Brad Smith and Phil Spencer may get fired. I personally think Phil Spencer is more likely to go than Brad because of how Xbox is performing overall, so it goes beyond ABK.

When Microsoft pays the $3 billion penalty, I reckon the board will have some questions. I think they will also ask what's next for Xbox, what's the plan, what's the current performance, and what's the ROI.

I don't think anyone is getting fired. Aaron Greenberg is still there and Major Nelson is kept around although nobody really knows what he does... Microsoft is bad at management on a lot of levels, getting rid of useless/underperforming executives is just another one of them.

Phil Spencer made their dream for cloud gaming and gamepass a reality and built a foundation which they can work on. That alone got him sometime in the office.

Brad Smith would never get fired, his current freakout aside, he's actually one of the key architects of their current overall strategy, which has yielded countless benefits.
Phil Spencer would probably be given some measure of time, but his days are numbered if Xbox doesn't make any headway.

Phil is already on his way out. It's not happening today or perhaps even this year but this is business. Forget the XBOX division and the litany of failures. The fact that most of the ammunition the CMA needed to block this acquisition came from his unfounded boasting and near endless string of PR statements aka Phil's own mouth... Couple that with the 2.5 Billion they now owe activision because of the failure.
You'd have to figure out the most complex mental gymnastics to create an argument where Phil Stays in place.
It's not an immediate departure. Think Halo Infinite. Cataclysmic failure followed by great PR... Then mass lay-offs when the timing is right.

It's easy to say "yes they will kill the console division" or "no they will stay the course", but Xbox as a business seems to be operating on a logic that most competitors aren't able to operate under, so it's very hard to predict.

They are going to phase out Xbox consoles in 1-2 gen for xcloud.
The fact they have xcloud console in the production is indication of that.

I think we will see one more console and that's it. Although the fanboys keep fighting over the deal and what it means for consoles and that MS should found new studios blablabla, in my opinion MS's goal and the reason to buy AB is xCloud/mobile gaming.
If Nintendo and Sony would allow Game Pass on their consoles, Ms would instantly allow it. You can tell that they are not very interested in selling consoles, because at first they took them from the market and used the XSX for their server farms and now unbundled Series X are hard to find. That's stupid, because people prefer consoles only.

MS played the 10 year plan, instead of examining the cloud part very well.
According to CMA, MS wanted 100% of cloud revenue. That is bad for cloud companies, as there no is revenue for them.
You also have to look at what Phil did for them. Not the content output, but the overall brand.
Gamepass and xcloud is MS point of view right now. It wouldn't have happened without him.

ABK, yes. I've said as much earlier in this thread that it would be unfair to Phil if they fire him just because of ABK.
However, it is possible that the ABK acquisition mishap serves as the straw that broke the camel's back. If management is indeed unhappy with Xbox's progress, the ABK debacle, the subsequent $3 billion penalty, and a performance review of XBS so far this generation, may frustrate the Board of Directors.
Mainly because the trend is downward. If the trend was improving, I'd think there is more time for Phil to steer the ship.

Yup. While loss leader strategies are common and completely tolerable in favor of bigger future gains, there has to be a positive trend and meeting of KPIs on a regular basis.
Xbox may have gone under the radar a bit because of how insanely profitable Microsoft is and continues to be. However, I suspect that the ABK fallout may lead to closer scrutiny and review of the Xbox division -- and its leadership.

Anyway, circling back to my original question, it seems like the general consensus is that:
- Satya Nadella is pretty much safe
- Brad Smith is also safe
- Phil Spencer may or may not be safe (the opinions are divided on this one).
