Microsoft Announces Windows 10

From Windows Supersite:
Why "Windows 10"? Windows 9 was the "natural" name for this release, Terry Myerson said, and was indeed the original name. But after joking about a few fake names—like Windows One—he noted that this isn't an incremental release. It's a major new Windows that will run on everything from headless Internet of Things devices to phones to tablets to PCs to the Xbox to the cloud. They really wanted to segregate it from current Windows versions.

Continuum: One major new feature. Of course, Microsoft still needs to address the problem of switching between the two interfaces that collided in Windows 8—the mobile environment formerly called Metro and the classic desktop interface—especially on 2-in-1 devices. For example, if you have a Surface Pro 3 and unplug the keyboard, should Windows still work the same way? A feature called Continuum, not available in the Technical Preview, will introduce tablet and keyboard modes that react on the fly depending on the hardware you're using. So we won't know for a while how well it works.

Just finished watching the presentation. Honestly, the only thing I'm really excited about at this moment is the ability to select, copy, and paste text via keyboard in Command Prompt. I developed habits while using Ubuntu and not having basic shortcuts like that in Windows is annoying.

The only thing i'm a bit worried about is the new start screen setup, namely this.

I really hope there is an option to disable the taskbar (and have the current start button in the corner) when using start screen mode, and also not to have the small list on the left (i don't like the look of that at all on the start screen).

That's only for touch devices, which I like.

This is why I've yet to adopt Windows 8. Microsoft, just give me a goddamn desktop OS.

I have used 8 on desktop with 30" display since the os was released. It's better desktop os than 7. The updates in 10 do look great and i'm sure people who are still messing around with 7 are going to be satisfied.

I like using this mode on my Windows 8.1 PC (not s touch device), what I'm saying is - from the way it was explained we can choose to use this mode if we want when not using a touch device or using one, what i want is to have it without the taskbar and that small list section on the left if you use this mode (basically having it look just like Windows 8.1).

I guess you're right. Also, I kind doubt my Surface RT (1st edition) can handle Windows 10 features. lol

It will be Windows 10 phone/tablet version of some sort. RT is being merged/replaced with Windows Phone apparently. Surely wouldn't have trouble, whether Microsoft would actually care to update Surface RT 1&2 I'm not so sure.

Wait...I thought Windows 9 was rebranded to 10...does 9 still exist or are you joking around?

Microsoft's advertising doing work as usual.

I really can't wait to see the commercials. I assume they won't even touch on it, or they'll go all out and make comparisons to how awesome it is to be "jumping into the future, NOW".

Of the brand new things shown, desktops, easy access to open apps, and that beautiful snap feature are cool

Apps being not being full screen and start menu are also huge

I like it

I like Windows 8 for it's speed in the desktop and would never go back to 7. Other than the metro design that is a little confusing, the OS was great imo but the touch interface wasn't intuitive and the changes were too fast for people to adapt.

I like how Windows 10 is looking, start button looks nice. I can't wait to try it !

As a 8.1 user I don't think it's that the interface change was too quick...I think it's that mobile interfaces in general don't translate well to desktop usage patterns (e.g. launchpad, tiles).

Also, as someone who uses both ios and android devices on a daily basis I find the interface more visually confusing than the others, dislike the color usage in general, and I find that each element of the interface (except tiles set to small) takes up too much real estate.

I do like the Mail client, though.

So should I try out the developer thing if I have 7?
Would I be able to go back to 7 afterwards or create a partition or whatever.

Oh my god I hope they pull something like in the name of all things humorous. I bet they don't touch on it though.

Chances extremely low on this, as in close to 0% chance. It's ALWAYS safer/smarter to create a new partition or another harddrive to try out alpha/beta OSes.

I can only imagine the number of people who will install/overwrite this over their main OS then complain/bitch when things don't work right.

Windows 10 is pretty logical name if you look at the goals but nobody is going to care though. They just see it as a new product.

I'm confused and can't watch the video right now so someone please seriously explain what's going on. I'm at work on a very short break.

They're skipping 9 to underline how much of a leap forward this new OS will be.

It will be one OS for all kinds of devices, and looks like a fusion of 7 and 8.

Fusion of 7 and 8? So windows 78? Windows 15? Windows Sevate? Windows Eigven?

What's confusing you? MS haven't officially announced anything since 8.1

I can easily see someone not into games and getting a gift for their grandchild or whatever being confused by the whole xbox/xbox360/xbox1 thing. And going to Windows 10 would be especially odd.

Considering Windows 7 was actually Windows 6.1, and Windows 8 was 6.2, and Windows 8.1 was 6.3... whatever ok, this can be Windows 10.

Whatever.

I like the direction they're going in FWIW.

That was for stupid app developers that were incorrectly checking the major version number and not letting an app work correctly because it would think 7.x wasn't compatible. That version number is for programmers.

Much like how Linux went from 2.x.x.x.x.x..xxxxxx to 3.0 to simply clean up the versioning.

Exactly. And it's not just something like a big patch every three months. Apparently you have access to weekly or even daily builds and updates. They seem to aim to be quite open about this.

Current rumors say it's monthly updates. However, that's once a month from the main development branch of windows, so it will be code that is very fresh. Even then, they can still make tweaks to changes on the fly between those patches and see which fares better (see: A/B testing).

I have heard both Mid 2015 and late 2015. Which is it? Any links?

Depends on what your definition of "release" is. There are two releases which will happen. RTM = Release to Manufacturing. RTW = Release to World.

Windows 10 should RTM, aka "go gold" in mid 2015. Typically a few days after RTM it becomes available on MSDN and various other channels and you can install it on production systems. However, once Windows is RTM'ed, it takes a few months for OEM's to finish hardware and prepare for launch, MS continues to work on updates for both the OS and apps, gets the marketing engine going and then they will "launch" it a few months after RTM, which is known as RTW. This is when you can go to a store and buy a Windows 10 PC or license.

Both dates you are hearing are technically correct. If you're someone with MSDN access, then Windows 10 will be available in mid-2015. If you're not, or you want to know when you can get a Windows 10 PC, then it is late 2015.
