Microsoft hardware event set for October 6th

The Pro 3 weighs 798 grams versus the Pro 2's 907g, so it's ~10-15% lighter. I'd expect the SP4 to have similar weight at the same size, considering Microsoft announced that the SP4 would be compatible with SP3 hardware (specifically the Surface Pro 3 Dock).

For that reason, I would also expect it to have the same charging port and USB port placement. They could have a second USB port, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The dock actually doesn't use the USB port at all, but extra pins on the power plug. So they could move the USB port, though there's no reason to really.

What's more likely IMO is that they'll replace the miniDP with a USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port. Doesn't necessarily break compatibility because Thunderbolt can output DisplayPort natively.

Seriously? How do the USB ports on the dock work then?
EDIT: Reading comprehension.

I'm not generally up on phones, but is 32 gigs of memory not kind of light for a phone these days?

I'm still running a nokia 1020 and I really want a new windows phone.

It's still good. The newest iPhone coming out next month still starts at 16GB for example. Personally, I think 16GB is way too restrictive, but 32GB is perfectly comfortable to me.

Only reason you would want more:
- You take large amount of photos and videos
- You download a large amount of games (take up a lot of space)
- You download a large amount of music for offline playback

I have a Lumia 920 with 32GB of storage, and I plan to get a 32GB model again. I have no big reason to need to spend more money since I don't take a lot of photos, and only download a small amount of music for offline playback.

And yeah, as a Lumia 920 owner, I REALLY want these phones to be good. I desperately need an upgrade. I'm hoping the new app platform, and Android/iOS bridges they're building start to make a dent in the marketplace. I really like the overall OS, but man it's annoying having the third place marketplace support.

I was all about the iPad Pro for like a day and now I'm over it.

I just bought a SP3 for digital illustration and power-wise it's totally fine for my needs... I don't know what they could do to make me sell. Significantly better pen tech and fanless version that has the same power as the i5 could do it...

I have a band and if they improve the durability of the screen, I won't hesitate to buy the 2nd iteration. Love this thing.

Please god be a new high end Nokia Lumia. I really need to switch away from the 929. Fantastic phone, but the speakers are downright terrible, and I refuse to live in shame any longer.

I wonder how much, if any, talk of Win 10 that specifically relates to touch hardware will make it to the conference.

On an OS level many, many touch-friendly features were silently dropped in the transition between 8.1 and 10 (where did the gestures on Edge go, Microsoft?). Since OS is technically software, are they just gonna drop the SP4 announcement and just gloss over all the touch-related issues and omissions from Win 10? That'd make for a really weird conference overall.

mmmm hook the surface pro 4 directly to my veins. absolutely love the 3 and win 10 works so great on those style devices

Bring on the Surface Pro 4. I need a flood of 3's to hit Craigslist so the price gets driven down low enough that I can actually afford one.

I thought MS confiremd it's 940 not 950?

I hope we finally get premium Windows Phonws this time, TP aside (which only HTCm8 applied) we haven't had premium since the 928/925. I guess one could say the ICon as well.

I'm tired of all the post MS buy-out phones all being shit plastic with colors. I want a low high end or high high-end device. Upper mid-rage could work to if the material are good but then that wouldn't be much of a flagship. Look at the 640 wtf is that?

Then the next round of phones isn't for you, I'm afraid.

I still can't believe that Microsoft attempts to launch full plastic "flagship" phones in 2015.

The 830 is plastic and gorgeous.

The 920 was plastic and remains one of the most beautiful phones ever.

It's all about having some taste. Unlike the 950.

The 830 has a metal frame. That does make a different when you're holding the phone in your hand. The plastic back is an acceptable compromise, because it allows wireless charging.

Really, all they had to do was to beef up the specs of the 830 and call it a day. At least for the 5.2" version. No one would've thought the design is boring and outdated (because no one bought one).

The 950 and 950 XL look like cookie cutter ODM rebrands.

They ain't gonna do two sets of chassis. It's either Core m3/m5/m7, or Skylark Core U i3/i5/i7. I'm leaning toward Core M.

my concern with core M is complaints about it being 'gimped'. Although reviews of some core M products have shown it capable of running almost as well as a core i5200U (which would be the other likely candidate), in regular use scenarios. People would moan though (I'd be happy and assume it would be lighter/thinner as a result)

I don't think I want the larger format but I don't want a device that's less powerful or "as powerful" as the SP3. Was hoping for something a bit better.

CURSES.

in theory if they handle the SDP well, and using a metal chassis to dissipate heat, a core M may perform better than the SP3 as less likelihood to throttle due to heat.

Whether Skylake will be used is not even a question. Of course they are using Skylake, otherwise why November release?

The question is whether Core M or Core U. Apparently Core M for 12" and Core U for 14"

so there *are* two chassis? :P

didn't hear rumours of a 14". That sounds much more 'touchscreen laptop' than 'laptop tablet hybrid'

would make a nice family lineup though

Surface - 10" atom based
Surface pro 12" - core M, fanless
Surface pro 14" - Core i, with fan, for power users

especially good if the likely pricing of the 14" means the 12" gets a price drop.

I've got the Lumia 1020 and the camera is so beast that I don't want to downgrade it even if the overall phone is better #firstworldproblems

Likely to have worse integrated graphics though. And I'm planning to go balls deep on an i7 model if it offers higher end performance. I'm trying to get a Spro that will run Hearts of Iron 4 on the go at an acceptable level (don't care if I need to be plugged into a wall socket for max perf) when that game comes out. The next generation of integrated stuff should do nicely via Skylake, but I'm concerned that the use of a core M part may result in some crummy HD 5300 or comparable part.

My next phone will be shown there. Excited! :)

me too!

been waiting for this for a while.

I couldn't wait for the SP4, so I just got the SP3 last week HAH!. I am interested to see what the SP4 will be like, but more likely to get the SP5 instead.

oh in that case yes, you'd want skylake U- sounds like a nice GPU bump, probably mostly responsible for it staying a 15W part. The CPU on its own being at 14nm should probably be quite a bit less power.

core M have crappy IGPs. I think even the top end Y71 literally does have a HD5300

I'm not seeing an i3 SKU. Is it just not in that chart or does it not exist at all? I don't want the 799 SKU to die and be replaced by the much inferior S3 with the Atom. *sigh*

it was on the next slide. usual i3 - lower speed, no turbo boost, smaller cache, only intel HD520 graphics I think.

Although worth bearing in mind that in the surface pro 3 they didn't even put an i3-U in there, they put an i3-Y I think, which was even more underpowered.

Wonder if I should just sell my 2012 iPad now. It's not getting much use and I doubt it will get much use when I end up getting a SP4.

Some relatives are going to the US late October til mid November. I wonder if they can bring one with them for me. That would be cool.

hmm good point. I'm in Japan for christmas and surface pro 3 prices are much better - I can get an i5/128 for the same price as an i3/64GB in the UK. Are the warranties global?

Windows Hello is the feature which enables various forms of biometric authentication.

-Face detection through a 3D / Infrared camera so it can't be fooled by photos (it can even distinguish twins)
-Iris scanning
-Fingerprint

So you can unlock your PC using whatever of the above it supports.

It also integrates with a more general feature called "Passport" where you can use those credentials to also log into web sites and applications which build the support for it (which is supposed to be pretty easy).

Will passport work for devices that don't have Hello, but have pins?

Since the pin never leave your device I guess it could be safe enough, right?

Alright, thanks. And that doesn't sound great at all. What makes this worse is that no one gets the i3 unit to review. And I also don't want to wait a month for the Anandtech review. That said, the i3 would probably still be absolutely fine for me. Heck, I'd have a Surface 3, if it was more reasonably priced.

I've held off on upgrading my Sony Xperia Z1 for a Z5 as want to see what MS has in store for WP.

I had, and loved, my Lumia 920 back in the day but eventually upgraded to Android and WP was so far behind the competition in terms of apps and features.

I do miss certain things about the OS though so I'm hoping they deliver big with these new devices. Will be interesting to see what WP10 looks and performs like. Will it have greater app support?

As a Microsoft employee I'm unapologetically ecstatic to throw my money at a Surface Pro 4 and Band 2 despite not knowing any details about them which aren't rumors.

Bought a Band and Surface Pro 3 with my own money at full price when they each launched last year, and have used both of them every single day, day-in and day-out ever since.

The SP3 is by far the best computer I've ever used. It's my main workhorse PC in addition to being my Diablo 3 machine + laptop (I've never had a problem with "lappability").

The Band, while currently bulky and uncomfortable at first, has genuinely helped me improve. I love the built-in GPS which lets me run without my phone, the notifications tell me about texts/calls I'd otherwise miss frequently, and it integrates with MyFitnessPal perfectly. I love how I can go for a run or a hike and instantly those burned calories subtract from my food log for the day, increasing my calorie budget for that day.

Will buy all of this before it's even available with an employee discount.

I just got a sp3. It will run diablo?? Settings turned right down?

I'm just surprised BC I tried running hearthstone and it was very slow.

FWIW the Y-series i3 that was in the Surface Pro 3 (locked at 1.5 GHz) has been downgraded to a Pentium with Skylake. So they might use a regular U-series i3 (locked to 2.3 GHz) or possibly a Core m3 (turbo up to 2.2 GHz).

I already answered the questions about Diablo earlier. Like I said, it's not pretty with most of the settings turned down, but I've played it for 10+ hours with no major issues.

Do you have any gameplay videos? I'm pretty skeptical of it maintaining a half decent frame rate, let alone stable, when you are being swarmed on screen and multiple abilities are going off.

Here's a really quick one I just took but I'll try to capture a better one when I have time. Kinda difficult to hold my phone and play at the same time since I can't use keyboard shortcuts. But lots of enemies and abilities, frame rate is more than smooth enough.

Diablo 3 is not a very demanding game, especially if you enable Low FX and turn down settings.

Damn man, you really delivered. From the video, Diablo 3 looks to run pretty well. I'm very surprised considering how SC2 ran for me.

Yeah, it doesn't need to be pretty. Got a beefy desktop for that. It just needs to work. But alright, an i5, that's what I wanted to know.

Wonder how they're spacing out the SP4 line up.

Yeah yeah, you know I meant two sets of chassis. There aren't gonna be 4 variants (2 per size) is what I meant.
