Interested in the SP4 and the Band2, not interested in the phones until Microsoft moves the water for third party app support.

I thought those universal app platform could run/emulate ios, Android and two other types of apps (think it was java and c++)?

It can emulate Android apps, but iOS apps still have to be ported. It's supposed to be be much easier now, though (basically a recompile, iirc).

I wonder how significant a GPU increase can be compared to what has been around last year. For gaming and stuff. (Does this tech advance quickly on tablets?)

Basically wondering if there's clear benefits going with the strongest version (specs) they are going to offer.

Pretty excited. Time to start putting some money aside. I guess the 14" could get quite expensive.

potentially a big jump, with the 15W chips getting iris GPUs with 64MB edram in some configurations. However one article I read said that the iris chips might not come until early 2016, so if they are launching this year they would be with lower powered GPUs

arstechnica had an article a couple of weeks ago which is where I got the slide on the previous page

i3 - HD520 GPU
i5/i7 - HD520 or Intel Iris 540

Intel HD520: 24EUs,
Intel Iris 540: 48EUs, 64MB edram,

the intel slides have TBD on the pricing for the chips with Iris 540 so that might also point to them not being available yet. In that case, if the SP4 launches soon, it may only have Intel HD520 GPUs.

for comparison, the current surface pro 3 i5.i7 have HD4400 GPUs with 20EUs and the i3 has a HD4200 (also 20EUs but only boosts to 850MHz)

And the want to do it...

The motivation must have been low to port applications on windows phone, but if an easy rebuild allows devs to target all windows 10 phones, tablets, PC and consoles, I guess more will be interested. I expect many "quick and dirty" ports actually, but that's (much) better than nothing.

The very least Microsoft could do is bring their own apps to the Windows ecosystem. Still no Sunrise on Windows 10 is laughable.

I think the only apps they take seriously are Office on iOS. I want to see a behind the scenes at Microsoft on app development to see if it's just crickets in those buildings. Microsoft need to deliver in spades and no second best, time is up. Deliver or give up. If they start saying wait for Windows 10.1 or whatever codename, christ almighty. This time everyone, we've got this /o\

I had to wait too long. Ordered a iPhone 6s plus 64gb to replace my Lumia 920. I totally forgot about the devices announcements on October 6th but I'm fine with being guaranteed to have a prime selection of apps for any gadget or toy or service that has one.

I'll still be watching and hope the 950s phones impress.

I don't blame you. October will be the two year anniversary of the 1520's announcement. I'm about to get an iPhone and bounce as well but I can't upgrade till mid October. Hopefully the 950 impresses.

Perched for Surface Pro 4. Glad it's being announced before iPad Pro preorders so I can compare before buying one of them.

I really hope we got reviews for both devices before one or the other ships.

I thought only less tech-savvy people wont know but how is it a debate for people who know what the spec and what both devices are capable.

Let me put it simply for you,

if you want APPS get iPad (while way overpriced, still you will get the best apps, and newer apps faster. Windows store situation is not going to get better in a month)

If you want device that will do everything else. Get Surface Pro. This is not even questionable. 1.5 year Pro 3 with same price blows new iPad out of water. They even showed 4k video editing on go. It cant get more complex than that for average consumer.

Pro 4 is going to be sweet. I wish people wouldnt compare dumb down ARM device like iPad pro with this this.

I wouldn't mind buying a Lumia, but it needs to be under 5", certainly no more.

The only Lumias under 5" are the budget ones and that isn't going to change. It's more likely the new budget line get bigger screens than the higher end models getting smaller screens.

HEHE.

I just bought a Surface Pro 3 as a secondary computer for digital illustration. Hands down, no doubt about it the Apple Pencil looks much better than the SP3 stylus. Sorry but it's truth. Sometimes I do slower lines when drawing and the SP3 is just bad at this (wavy lines).

I hope MS gets it right with the SP4. If not I may sell my SP3 as that's all I want a digital tablet for... illustration. I can deal with using apps over Photoshop if I have to as I'm not a professional.

Let's hope the inevitable Cortana demo works better then it did at a sales conference.

Damn he looks pissed... heh.

I wonder if it would be safe to have a Surface Pro 4 imported. Obviously issues can always show up with any device but I don't know how frequent they are with these.

I'm also going to have to look up some info as to if the warranty is covered here because I had some results saying they would be, even though I assumed that would not be the case.

Either way I can see myself using it a lot for streaming X1 and lesser demanding games. Much more so than I ever did with my iPad. Stream in-house streaming too, hopefully. It will be awesome.

Do MS have a global warranty? That would make me tempted to pick one up in Japan at Christmas

I don't know about that but when looking for information about that, I saw a post about someone in Germany saying his warranty from a US device would be covered. So I'm in the Netherlands and that's close enough.

I'll definitely look into it a little more. I can save a lot of money if relatives bring one home from the US. I could get better specs that way, I'll just go for a stronger device.

They should wait for Snap 820, those 810 have been problematic so far.

As for Surface that's such an awesome line of products, Microsoft class is outstanding and know with W10...

God

so there *are* two chassis? :P

didn't hear rumours of a 14". That sounds much more 'touchscreen laptop' than 'laptop tablet hybrid'

would make a nice family lineup though

Surface - 10" atom based
Surface pro 12" - core M, fanless
Surface pro 14" - Core i, with fan, for power users

especially good if the likely pricing of the 14" means the 12" gets a price drop.
I think this would be perfect too.

I'd like for the Surface family to include a nice 15" laptop sometime in the next two years. Something to compete with the retina macbook pro.

Hope it happens.

As longs as the device is supported by Microsoft in your nation you should be covered. But take note that the Surface will then follow the American warranty law.

So nothing about that x64 surface phone rumors?

That is rumored for a spring 2016 release. It would be way too early for announcement now.

Also waiting for something like that, for now im waiting for the dell xps 15 with infinity display.
Something as a baseline for other laptop manufactors kinda like the surface pro for tablets.

K, still a long wait then :(

Those Lumias sound pretty good hardware wise. MS is really doing their best, aren't they? But after decades of spotty software (IMO), I just can't bring myself to trust Microsoft.

Iris scanning unlock demoed on both the SP4 with Threshold 1 and the Lumia Flagships.

I'm really hoping the Band 2 has internal memory for its own music. Working out/jogging without a phone but just your Band 2 and a Bluetooth headset would be great. If you really think about it, a watch is a far better music player than a phone. Cortana music commands or on screen touch on a watch seems easier than taking your phone out of your pocket. Store music on the Band for phone-free workouts and you have a winner.

That looks pretty good. If they improve the durability of the screen on that Band 2, I'll buy it. I love my Band but damn does the screen get marked easily.

My screen is still in great condition, but the rest of the band is falling apart after just 6 months of use (plastic on the battery covers is gone, rubber around the clip area falling off, screws coming loose every now and then).

No way. I don't want a 12" Surface to be limited to Core M. I love the 12" of my Surface Pro 3, 14" would be way too big for me, and I just want a non-M Skylake CPU in it. Skylake Core M would be slower than the Core i5 in my current SP3 I think.

Is the Band 1 more resilient than a fitbit? I've been through like 3 in 12 months because they keep having various issues like the rubber bits starting to detach, or the clasps breaking etc.

Cant wait for the Surface Pro 4. Its Microsoft's sale to lose from me.

The toss up now is whether I stick with the Lumias, or go back to iOS. if Windows Mobile 10 isn't great and those leaked phones are all we're getting, I think ill just grab a 6S Plus.

Yeah agreed. I'll be looking at purchasing the 12" SP4, but if it's a Core M I'd be pretty hesitant.

The only issue I've had with mine is the face getting scratched. I'm very active, P90X1, 2 and 3, bike riding and it's survived so far. I've only owned it 4 months, though.
