Banned

In an amazing turn of event, it seems that Microsoft started banning people who are using modified firmwares on their consoles to play illegal copies on xbox live! According to early rumors from IRC channels and xbox-scene.com's message board (which is being flooded with users as we speak), it seems that the banning started this morning.Banned consoles are unable to connect to xbl at all, and get that message! Microsoft's strike comes straight into the tradition of striking at critical moments during their release schedules, having done the same 2 years ago to hacked consoles during the launch of Halo2.

It's a good thing that microsoft started doing this, piracy on the 360 was getting pretty bad and it sucked to hear some guys bragging about having had this game for like two weeks and such.

It also seems that the bannings were not for everyone, as some people pointed in saying that they are still fine for now. No legit users have reported this message; inquiries to the xbox live support line by people on forums said that reps were only saying that 'xbl might be experience problems in some regions'

But then again, no false negatives were reported.

can you save when this happens..? the 360 saves system is so messed up with all the xbox live connectivity it pisses me off (in general)

I'm glad MS is finally taking action, and I hope every single one of them gets banned forever.

I'm always shocked how many obvious instances of this there is. Take a look around any leaderboard sometime and see quite a few people that have obviously hacked their console in some way.

Most obvious is those that 'own' every single game in every region and have most of the achievements unlocked for them too.

Loads of people reporting it bout time to be honest

W: 0000- 000B
X: 0000 - F001
Y: 00A8 - 6820
Z: 8015 - 190D

Thats the error code banned people are getting

This is pretty shocking. Microsoft has usually been pretty lenient about things of this nature!

Not true. People with legit boxes are having problem also and getting this error. If you call up my xbox it says they are having problems also.

Really? I don't even know anybody with a modded 360, unlike Xbox and PSP where modding was and is rampant (not always for piracy, but if your system isn't modded, you can't play copied games).

So the massive attach rate for 360 should actually be higher?

Didn't this happen last time MS tried banned modded firmwares legit people got caught in the crossfire??

Seems to be affecting hitachi drive users. I have a hitachi drive (Not modded) so better not affect me :/

That's awesome. I love the strategy of waiting till as many hackers come online at once as possible so they cant report back and help others avoid the same fate. :lol

Piracy aint so cheap now huh fellas.

I find it hard to believe tbh.
Nice move though. They should post a list of all the people being banned, perferably with the RL name and phone number.

Yeah lots of false positives with whatever detection method they're using.

But they can still play games, just not on XBL.

A 360 without Live would be pretty painful, though, wouldn't it? I mean, you could still play the games, but it's like half (or less) of the experience.

Hahaha good job Microsoft.

The only purpose for chipped consoles atm is piracy and only piracy. Serves them right for being filthy thieves.

It seems only those who tried to play the Halo 3 beta with a cracked copy of Crackdown are getting the message.

Seriously, I wish they could target and explode individual boxes. Like as the cheater goes to eject a game it blows up and takes out his gaming hand....

:D

Microsoft testing there detection before rolling it out fully??

Could it also only be affecting people who don't apply the security patches to their games? Noticed a post about it earlier where people were asking whether or not they should apply them

I'm sure a small number just wanted some rare Japanese 360 game to play on their 360. Assuming they make 360 games in Japan people want to play.

360 drive firmware hacks do not defeat region protection.

would be awesome if they tagged accounts so your friends list would show if any were banned. LOL

a mod on a 360 is just for piracy at the moment. BAN them all. No more achievements and online play for you! Halo 3 with out the pirates will be golden.

Yep, signed code is still safe. 360 has shaped up to be way more secure than Xbox 1 was.

Can't you still buy Xbox360's in the stores that have the hackable kernel? Not much has been done with it though

-edit- Also people banned are reporting that they can still use there gamertag's on other systems so its only the system itself that seems to of been banned at least at the moment

I'm sure you can find them, but there isn't as of yet any way to play online with it.

That's how Xbox 1 bannings worked. They grabbed the serial and MAC address off the EEPROM and k-lined the system.

Yeah true, wasn't it the same with the original Xbox though? Or did hackers get around that?

Dual-boot mod chips were the norm even in the beginning, and those worked fine on Live unless you came home one night after too much wine and booted straight into a game without flipping the switch. Eventually they started recording the HDD serial numbers of newer systems so that they could tell if you did an HDD upgrade, which became an automatic ban.

Good.
I even wish they would update a little software being that message that actually brick their console.

Bricking the systems is a bit much don't you think? Especially if it does affect some legit users

Seems like ppl who messed with game saves are the ones getting that error, but if u go to bungie.net it shows no one playing Halo 3 beta so must be problems with live also

ToiletofSadness said:
To my knowledge, nothing was released publicly that allowed you to do that.

To be clear, dual-booting to get on Live meant that you were running the system in a pre-mod state at that moment and couldn't be using a copied game. No big deal to those who were into the mods for XBMC anyway.

Most cheating on Live was more about using hacked save files which triggered all sorts of 'special' behavior, and you really didn't even need a modded system for that.

I searched the scene, and thus far this is not the case. It seems related to live being overburdened with the Halo 3 download.

However it is a matter of time.

edit: Confirmed from Major Nelson

How does it affect them? Anyways, my only point is that a hacked console could become unusable. I mean, they won't go on live and Microsoft will lose 60$. They can copie hundreds of games and make devs loose thousands...
The idea is to find a safe way to detect wich console has been hacked and wich one is legit. I'd be confident in them to find a way.
