Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

You could probably put We Happy few in that category as well since it got a pretty lengthy reveal
But as you said, I only expect those 3 above and 1 actually AAA game to be the "new"stuff announced
Ah, forgot about that.

Mhm, I would just go in thinking that. No need for people to set themselves up for more and get mad.

Accurate insider info being dropped in hurr or just assumptions? Cause we I'm not seeing much room for 2-3 surprises which would be sad. Hope I'm wrong.

Still looking forward to seeing more of scorpio though.
Nah, just predictions.

Edit - Well, Recore Definitive Edition comes from someone who says he has inside info but the rest is as Leflus said.

I'm already sold on Scorpio and State of Decay 2 is a guaranteed pre-order. I want to see a blowout of Crackdown 3 to see if it's for me. Showing me Halo 6 does nothing for me as I have no interest in that franchise. I enjoyed Gears of War 4 and im looking forward to GOW5 but at the same time, I know that it's coming and I don't need to see it until the year it comes out.

The reason why Microsoft's IP's don't sell outside of the big three is because they don't showcase them correctly or they're overshadowed by other games. Halo 6 especially ending the conference WILL BE the main conversation of the show, not Crackdown 3 or State of Decay 2 and then when both those games fail to meet sales expectations, Spencer and others will wonder why.

It's because they don't give them the love and focus that their big three get. Can't expect other IP's to sell when you're treating them like crap compared to the big three. Microsoft has to go all out with Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 if they want them to succeed. Forza Motorosport 7 will sell it's normal few million copies and doesn't really need a lot of stage time.

Add in Scorpio reveal of what it looks like, the price/release date, Ori 2 most likely being announced, ACO and Shadow of War along with short segments for AR/VR, the new interface, Game Pass, etc. and they have a good show.

If Sea of Thieves slips to after E3 2018, they can also show that off again next year along with Halo 6, Forza Horizon 4 and hopefully, Playground Games new IP. Microsoft can easily have a foundation for this year and next year's E3 shows that they can build around on.

Also, with all the talk always being about how Microsoft has nothing but the big three, ignoring Halo and Gears this year would prove otherwise to those who believe that. If all they do is end E3 with Halo, it's simply the same shit, different year.

Don't worry. They will regardless ;)

Indeed. People want to get mad lol.

Like, of course I want MS to announce stuff leaning more toward what I want but I know that isn't realistic. Instead, I'll keep expectations for what I know MS can deliver. It may not be the most exciting for me but it is better than expecting something I know won't happen just to be outraged afterward.

I see.

Well...guess we will have to wait and see. I do hope Ashen, Below, and Cuphead gets release dates for crying out loud...they all look very interesting.

It would be a mistake to give Recore any serious stage time or any at all even with a Scorpio update...keep that shit for the show floor or something...BUT if they don't have much to talk about well, there it is.

Ashen is actually more interesting to me than Cuphead or Below at this point, both which strike me more as novelties; they could absolutely be good, and I'm expecting they will be,, but they seem more built on their gimmick (tiny self for Below, those gorgeous gorgeous visuals in Cuphead) than anything else. Ashen just has a really cool gameplay premise, first and foremost.

...

Actually I'm realizing that I'm speaking from a position of mostly ignorance on Below. It's mostly just a standard Roguelike, isn't it?

The person who provided the info for ReCore said it is because they want to show as much content for Scorpio as possible. It is something they can easily get together that will help clean up the game and it provides Scorpio with more stuff.

I do agree that it should only get brief time though.

ReCore Definitive didn't come from Sneakers, did it? The source I'm seeing in the thread is a ratings agency.

If true in hope they bring all the extra stuff from the DE to the buyers of the original too. Wonder if they can actually improve this game significantly in terms of gameplay and graphics. Has the potential to look a whole lot better on Scorpio than it did on X1 and even there it has its moments to be honest.

I'm not sure which came first between the rating leak and Sneakers. I think it was the rating though.

Mhm, this'll give them an opportunity to fix some stuff up because some said it seemed unfinished. I don't know though because I haven't played it.

I was going to say wasn't it leaked by a ratings board? I don't remember any insiders talking about it.
It was, but Sneakers spoke on it before too. I just don't know which came first.

This feels like something they'll do because it's a really easy PR win for them that gets previous ReCore purchasers back to the game, which improves the odds of WoM taking off for it. Nice upside for no real downside.

I'm certainly more curious to see what Ashen is actually like than Cuphead and Below. I think we've seen/know enough about Cuphead and Below to have decent expectations of what those games will be like (and that's not a bad thing, I'm excited for both of them). Ashen on the other hand we know very little about other the developers description of the game which sounds pretty ambitious.

Would be funny if it got more than the rather pitiful amount of stage time it got last year

It'll probably be part of the Scorpio showcase, so that feels like a pretty fair bet.

Yeah, that's certainly true.

Now is perfect timing for Microsoft to help Team Ninja revive Ninja Gaiden and showcase it through the power of Scorpio. Ninja Gaiden/DOA were exclusive to original Xbox cause it was a graphics powerhouse. Sony helped with street fighter so do the same with ninja Gaiden Microsoft

Definitely, when you go back and watch the trailer and see the scale of world they want to make it's seems very ambitious for a small team. I hope they nail it because some of the mechanics they have talked about sound really interesting.

It was definitely the ratings board first from my memory, if you go through the ratings board thread you see no mention of it being known before.
The ratings board did it first. Then some of us were using about a possible sequel and the sneakers signal went off to swish that and say that it's just getting a Scorpio facelift, as if that was a revelation. It wouldn't be surprising if every game from fall 2015 onward from MS got a patch( including ROTTr and Fallout)

I'm sure someone will make a thread, but let's continue that MS isn't making anything more that Halo, Forza, Gears...
Meh. More multiplayer games. : / Edit: Am I wrong in thinking that it sounds like it could be some kind of social tool akin to PS Home?

Can we make a thread about this tweet instead?

If I ever did another Banjo game I think I would would go for level design that is small and clever, best of both worlds surely?
https://twitter.com/Ghoulyboy/status/862789150793183232

Let me dream. :(

Microsoft hasn't announced any games that started development in 2015 or after that wasn't apart of the Big 3. Unless they've been twiddling thumbs they have to have something they've been working on for the past 2 years that should be ready for 2018.

I'm going to betray my ignorance for a moment and say that I have no idea how this would work. Last I'd heard, VR doesn't really play nice with a lot of core MMO stuff like... massive worlds you're supposed to move around. Or really any kind of walking?

Does it play well with flight simulators for space goodness? Or is all this nonsense and I'm just showing my ass?

Bruh.

I need this after Yooka-Laylee's massive levels. I always dreamed about a next-gen Banjo having intimate, densely designed worlds.
Agreed. The main reason why I prefer Banjo-Kazooie over Tooie and Y-L is its smaller world design combined with the world count.

Hopefully Yooka-Laylee 2 will improve from its predecessor, but it definitely wouldn't hurt to get both Y-L2 and Banjo-Threeie.

What even is mixed reality? AR like pokemon go? Or VR? Could it have something to do with the new avatar designs? Like a virtual reality PS Home?

Mixed Reality is literally just the platform that is VR and AR type of devices. They made a platform where developers can target both with a lot of common code and they have a lot commonalities for the devices. So just think AR + VR = MR.

Hmmm could be super interesting considering how much MS has been investing in those technologies as of late. I know this is a minority opinion in this thread, but outside of the big four (Fable, Gears, Halo, Forza), I feel Microsoft is better suited to trying to develop something crazy like this than try to chase the Naughty Dogs and Sony Santa Monica's of the world. Color me excited.

Edit: Wait, could this also be related to the partnership with Studio Gobo?

Man, that Gregg tweet is fucking surreal. This is the FIRST time he's ever publicly addressed the possibility of making a new Banjo. Like, himself, directly. Just acknowledging that as a thing makes me feel all tingly inside. And I love the comment about small and clever design. It's absolutely the right way to bring that game back.

It's good that he's also finally, explicitly taking credit for the design of the Banjo games. Look at his other tweets. Admitting to Tooie bloat, too. Good stuff. More people need to know he's the mind behind those games, much more than anyone at Playtonic.

Who knows. They are either doing a third person action game or a f2p game. I don't think that falls under vr mmo

I mean, if the rumored VR mmo is free to play, that does feel like a natural fit.

Actually, thought. Do we know for sure that the Gobo games are actually different titles? The descriptions are from separate job postings, they could be describing the same title in different ways to different applicants.

I still think they are doing something with Fable Legends

Yup. It's always frustrating seeing "All the good people left Rare" and "Playtonic has all the talent" posts when it was Gregg's brilliant designs that made the originals so good. The level design in Yooka-Laylee is a huge step down from Gregg's stuff.

Tooie's worlds may have been too big, but the idea of them being connected was awesome. If we had a game that took this combined with Kazooie's smaller, more focused worlds, it would be a dream come true.

When you have such an over reliance on certain franchises and kill all your studios except Rare that doesn't make them you create impression and I really don't think it's an unfair one.

They got e3 coming up so we'll see what they got but seems clear a lot of fans even don't have much expectation, you only get that if you give them a reason to think it.

Also may I be the first to say, "eugh" to whatever that project is

Depends on the deal.

Stuff like CoD/Destiny deals which actively lock away content from other platforms are bad. Stuff that's pure advertising or bundles don't end up hurting the game, unless one really wished the custom LE console was with the other platform instead of the partnered platform.

That Banjo tweet is interesting but probably nothing to get excited about. But it would be insane if they get to announce it at E3, small levels similar to BK is exactly what we need. Yooka is nice for sure, but it didn't necessarily need such huge open levels.

I do wonder if this maybe means he has spoken to MS about it and that this could perhaps happen after Sea of Thieves has released. It could be a smaller budget title like Recore was but using the Sea of Thieves engine and maybe cost around 35 to 40 bucks.

And as for that mixed reality game, cool I guess. Can't really get excited about that though. Never have been for VR or AR. Rather have a MS studio work on a game for the controller and that has a SP focus or at least mode as well.

Worst case scenario is that their first party doesn't improve a great deal, but you still have the Scorpio where your multiplatform games look and perform the best.

Thing is, he doesn't have Scorpio...noone does. If someone is about to drop the Xbox brand (or not get into it) because of the games lineup, he's not gonna buy Scorpio for the multiplatforms.

Ok you have a point there. He wants to see what the future of Xbox is looking like before buying one. I can understand that. Personally I am already OK with how Xbox is and will gladly buy Scorpio because at the end of the day I prefer Xbox over PS4. Not in terms of exclusives but everything else.

That's not to say I don't hope for a better future when it comes to first party or at least cool exclusives whether they come from a first party or a deal like Sunset Overdrive. But if I had been sticking more with PS4 from the get go and not much changes for Xbox in terms of exclusives I can understand not wanting to bother with Scorpio.
