Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

Boogie's streaming right now, pretty hilarious stuff, and I'm the kind of person that generally hates over active streamers. But apparently if you mess up a bit much early then your nemeses just go crazy power-wise. Seems like the game can get pretty hard if you aren't experienced with the Batman/SD style combat.

Where do I find these skirmishes to unlock all my abilities? Nothing shows up on the map except story missions and I have like 5 or 6 points I'm unable to spend. The screen with the red icons. Where do I find those in game so I can unlock stuff?

I love how you can defeat a certain Uruk over and over and they come back hunting you at random times all blooded and beat up looking to the point of being unrecognizable. And of course, remembering what happened, harboring a bigger grudge than ever. This game is as emergent as it gets.

Welp, reinstalling didn't work. Guess the universe just doesn't want me playing this game. Sucks, as I had to make a decision to buy this over Smash 3DS I had been anticipating. Now I get neither. Such is the risk of PC, I guess.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I was loving the Nemesis system until just now.
The captain who's given me by far the most trouble (mostly from running from multi-captain fights and leveling up for surviving, but partially by showing up when I'm already fighting four captains) was going to execute another captain. Naturally I decided to interrupt the proceedings. Anyway, I was almost finished killing the bastard when he ran away yet again. Then the fucking idiot captain who I just saved attacked me and made me lose chase. WTF

Where do you find "power struggles"? I have yet to ever see one on my map and my unspent ability points are piling up.

If you're not seeing any, you need to make time pass. Go to one of the save towers on the map and there will be a button prompt to make time pass. Either that, or you can die which also passes the time.

PSA for anyone still on the fence: GreenManGaming is still selling the PC version for 25% off AND it's still the 'Preorder' version according to Steam (it's downloading for me right now).

Use the code: SEPTEM-BEROFF-ER25XX

It still worked for me as of 11:50pm ET Sept 30 so this looks like a good way to go if you still want to buy it.

I'm someone that doesnt generally get through open world games of this ilk, but damnit is this game gonna buck that trend. From what little ive played the game is damn good!

Ok thanks, I'll give it a shot. (The first option that is...)

Either make time pass at a tower or enforce it yourself if you can brand people

Taking a break after playing for 12 hours straight, can't even remember the last time I did that with a game

This game is awesome, but my main gripe with the game is the horrendous difficulty levels. I've had an easier time in Dark Souls than this fucking game.

Everytime I face one captain at least 2-3 more show up with a bunch of people, and trying to juggle countering, with special moves, and ranged attacks, and jumping over shield enemies, knowing what not to use against the captains as they are possibly only weak to one thing is REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING.

So much so I just rage quick the fucking game. They really need to add the ability to change difficulties, or not let so many fucking captains spawn in, it's borderline impossible at this point as there the captains in my game are power level 20 and rising as I can't kill them, no matter how perfect I am, they always manage to land a blow.

That's just bad design decisions, Dark Souls was fun in a hard way, this is frustrating in an extremely unforgiving manner.

Who the hell thought, if you are dying, we will ramp up the difficulty more? That's idiotic.

I think we really need to start a new thread just telling about orc rivals we all have in the game. Some of the encounters and evolutions of enemies are interesting, or hilarious. A captain ran away while I was fighting his war chief, and now he's all ashamed and wearing a heavy helmet (I shot him in the head with an arrow as he was running, not sure why it didn't kill him.).

The continuity as time passes in this game is insane.

I pushed a captain into fire and he came back with a wrapped-up face and didn't speak anymore, just made noises.

I've killed like 5 captains and never had this happen. Only died once and it was my fault being sloppy picking up a reward after killing a captain win minions still alive

^ That has happened to me a few times in some areas, I tend to run away when it does. Hasn't happened during a proper event though, just random skirmishes.

I find it kind of interesting. If you want to take down a high profile target, you have to look into his weaknesses and habits, then figure out what he's likely to do in situations. I often find a way to isolate my target from the others (making them flee is very effective), or lure the whole group towards a campfire then blow it up, or lead them into a pack of caragors (awesome, especially if you can find 2 captains walking together who are weak against beasts).

Bottom line, I think this is a lot more strategy than most fighting games have. If you charge in or even take a slow approach, if you don't know every detail about your target, they'll be sure to surprise you.

Scope out the area before hand (press V, look around for reds which are captains, mark them with X). This allows you to keep track of all of the captain in the area, making it easier to draw one by himself and snipe him. If reinforcements comes, you run away and try again after they've seperated. Captains don't just 'spawn in', they are hanging around so it's a good idea to fully scope out an area first.

Literally impossible, unless you have enemies around. If I kill all of his body guards, I have no one to raise my streak up to x8 to do damage to him. So I run around like an idiot, then 3 captains and 20 other orcs show up and I get destroyed. Unless you are perfect, and I mean on mistakes, you can't win against all of them. Running away, proves pointless as the encounter will just happen again, with equal results.

I was in the same position as you a couple hours ago. Was having some real fucking trouble with a few captains. Couldn't progress towards the war chiefs because I couldn't touch their bodyguards. This was in the 1st zone of the game.

The thing that helped me a lot was using stun. Those captains that are immune to almost everything never seem to be immune to stuns.

Also, I found that when 3+ captains show up to a single fight, you should probably just book the fuck out of there.

Guess what, this motherfucker is immune to stuns because of his giant ass shield.

It makes you think and go get stronger yourself. Plus, it adds unpredictable believability and life to the world. There is always a weakness to exploit and once you know what to do, the revenge is all the sweeter.

There is literally no exploitable weakness - by the time you get a chance to raise your streak, you are surrounded with no way to win.

I played so much batman that doing the sword combat in this game to me is already second nature. It's even more forgiving than the Asylum games because you aren't punished for switching to counter mid-attack.

This game is amazing and I'm loving the hell out of it. Just killed my first warchief and I've been destroying Saurons forces. There are like 5 left maybe atm.

I'm at like 15 captains killed now and this has happened to me a few times now. I usually just jump around until I can do a special move on them to drain their health or get a nice stun and wail on them.

As much as I love the game, I'm hating the second half where you
have to brand all 5 warchiefs. The whole branding system is cool and all, but it doesn't work with warchiefs unless you get them to randomly decide to leave during combat, or happen to know of their single weakness. Or you can rely on an escort like mission where you get a captain to become a warchief, but that's resulted in even worse attempts on my part where I end up losing both the captain and the warchief. I've killed 10 warchiefs, and only branded 3 out of 5. This is annoying as all hell.

You know it's a bad thing when you're punished for killing what's supposed to be one of the toughest enemy types in the game. Ugghh...

Edit: I'm also hating the fact that when you fail a mission, you have to abandon it and run back to where you started it rather than just starting over. I know this doesn't happen with every mission, but for those it does, it's frustrating.

So is there only one nemesis board? I've got about 4 hours in the game and after slaver mission I've been doing nothing but hunting orcs and side quests. Got most of the nemesis board opened and killed about 5 or 6 captains. Does that mean I'm already half way through or is there a whole new board in the second area?

The board never stops filling up. More captains will take their place.

Advance time if you want more to appear immediately.

In my situations there have been, but I have not faced an Elite Captain yet.

Anyway, you said he has a big ass shield. Have you tried rolling over him and hitting him from behind until you can pull off an execution?

Look at the image, you can't jump over him, one of his strengths.

Yeah, if this is how hard elite captains are, pretty much warchiefs are impossible.

Question for people who got to the second area - is it possible to return to the first one afterwards?
I want to know if I should clear all the collectibles and challenges before moving on with the story.
So far I've done 2 story missions, but I've killed so many captains, that I've unlocked the 3rd tier of upgrades.

I think the Vault Breaker perk ruins that plan.

He has no weakness besides combat finishers, but he's not strong against beasts. I would start off by stealthily taking out as many orcs as you can (stay far away from him though, he has sniff, so he'll notice you), then go grab a caragor, and use that as your main offensive weapon. You can jump off at any time and kill his group (according to his strengths, he ALWAYS has a group with him, and he often summons more) which means that as long as you time your parries and aim well, you'll have plenty of finishers to use to kill him, while your caragor will continue to massacre his orcs.

Also, keep in mind that there is an ability you can use to break his shield, which takes away one of his biggest advantages.

I am big into strategy games, so stuff like this is what I enjoy. I don't blame anyone who gets frustrated about having to deal with all this, but I personally enjoy it.

Oh wow, this is the guy I was talking about in my earlier post, right down to the name. Explains why he's not in the army screen, he must not be procedurally generated. It is possible to beat him, you just have to be patient, vault a lot, and manage your streak to keep landing execution hits on him. It helps to have health regen runes because it's a long fight.

I think this game will do quite well this month. They positioned themselves really well between destiny and the other holiday games. Saw a lot of people picking it up today.

The Wraith Shockwave thing should stun him enough to get hits in. Also, I'm pretty sure there's an upgrade that will damage shields? Not entirely sure about that.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to find a caragor, but I can't find one in his area. If I can't find one I will be shit out of luck. And the ability to break shields is only for wooden shields.

I haven't raged this hard in a video game in a long time, it's extremely frustrating. I understand losing, and screwing up, but I tried so hard to counter and do everything perfect, but the fact that they can bring in 2-4 other captains is extremely difficult.

He's also apparently immune to vaulting.

Hmmm, the shockwave could work, maybe get a hit in, but after that you just get surrounded again. I understand difficulty, I love games like Dark Souls, but this isn't predictable (or they don't have some sort of general attack patterns, it's so random) in every sense of the word. Then when you mix in 3-4 other captains, and the plethora of orcs ranging from melee to ranged, it's difficult to juggle. I mean I can multitask, but it is overwhelming.
