Minecraft has regularly over a million concurrent players on PC alone

I remember talking to one of my female friends and I told her about minecraft story and her son heard and he was going absolutely ham for information on it

so yeah kids love the hell out of it

More kids playing MC instead of CoD is always a good thing.
As you bring up this comparison I'm reminded of my recent Rift DK2 demonstration, mostly with students aged 7-15, and >500 of them so at least somewhat statistically relevant in the broadest terms. The two game names I heard most often were Minecraft (most, and across genders) and CoD (exclusively by boys), by a massive margin over everything else.

That's what really drove home the mainstream popularity of the title for me.

Minecraft is definetly one of those generation defining experiences for kids these days. I think it's almost impossible to be a kid between 2-18 in western countries and not be affected by it.

"The minecraft generation"

I really don't think that's all that big by the standards used in this thread. It gets what, 250k concurrent players across all platforms combined? That's less than CS:GO.

I didn't realize that BF was that low now, is that just BF4 or is that both 3+4? If the latter thats crazy low..

People comparing it to Dota and LoL - keep in mind that they're both free to play games, thus the barrier to entry is nil. I know it's been cheaper in the past (I bought it in alpha for... must have been less than £5), but if I wanted to buy it right now it'd cost £17.95

Why do girls not play Call of Duty as much as boys do?

All my young cousins are in to it... Hell even my boss was like "I'm going to try Minecraft for the first time."

I told him to not get addicted.

When I bought this game, I had to PayPal money to notch directly and he was the only person working on it.

Four or five years later, Microsoft pays 2.5 billion dollars for the company. Crazy

I've had some awesome servers in my time on Minecraft - probably best online experience ever, if not tied with the early days of WoW when everyone including your grandma played it.

The GAF servers are the best ( :) )

Yeah, when i saw a group of kids running up to a minecraft toy shelf in a local supermarket a few months back, I was immediately taken back to when I first heard about this game.

It was in an IRC channel where some people played Wurm Online, a game Notch used to work on before Minecraft. This game that wasn't even known in the games industry, I certainly couldn't have predicted it'd even get close to becoming the global phenomenon that it is now. It has been quite cool to see what it has become.

How are he Rift demonstrations for kids so young? Do they "get it" ? Did anyone get sick? Sorry for a bit of OT, I just wonder. So many sceptics on GAF, always complaining about VR..
