Today I signed the papers for the office in the morning! We’ll move in there January 1! YAY!

When I got back home, I totally rewrote how the hell/normal plane transitions work, and cleaned up the code quite a lot. You’ll get more information about exactly how it works soon, as I’ve sent out a sneak peek build to two different gaming news sites.

The portals have a neat particle effect to them as well, and the transition is sufficiently cheesy.

Biomes got a bit of extra work as well, with the grass/leaf colors more correctly representing both temperature and dampness of the region, and the monster spawning code getting moved into the biome code. Right now, it’s all enemies in most biomes, except the hell biome where there’s only ghasts and zombie pigs.

I’m looking for a good new name for “hell”. I want to avoid simply re-using existing religious names, it would be more creative to have something original. At the moment, I’m considering both “The Slip” and “Nexus”, but neither feels minecrafty enough.

Also, the Zombie Pigs have a very very gory skin at the moment, but I will change that into something that doesn’t have blood in it. It’s more fun to be scary without blood.

:)

I guess since everyone else does it, it's about time I show my creations:

This is what I got going today. I've decided to transform my main base into a sort of skyscraper. It's still not finished obviously as I still need to fill in the floors, roof, stairs, lighting other things. It's designed to compliment the little tower on the left

The goal is to build a castle between the two towers that are all connected via sky bridges. And then also somehow connect them to the two castles I have built behind the mountain.
The little tower sits on a big floating piece of land I built in the valley between the hills.

I still have soo much work to do. I need so many blocks...

gathering can be a bitch. Be wary working at night. I was far from my spawn the other day, my inventory full of stone, and a creeper popped up and exploded from behind. By the time I got back to my grave, everything had disappeared. It was a lot of stone :)

Gathering tons of blocks can be tedious, but there are a few ways to make it easier.

Creating an underground mine and clearing it out can net a whole lot of blocks. I filled up 1 large storage box and one regular sized box with cobblestone so far having cleared out this:

minecraftexcavationpart1b.jpg

Its going to make it much easier to build a castle on top of my house in the near future.

Alright. It's clear that I somehow fucked my game up royally. Just like the other night, I died and upon respawning, I ended up losing a ton of work I had done. But here is the weird part. I didn't lose all of it. Just some, and it seems as if the timeline doesn't coincide. Meaning, I planted a couple of trees underground, then remembered I needed water nearby, so I diverted a river. Well, the river is there, but the trees and the dirt patches are not. Sections of the mine I had leveled with TNT are back, but the TNT is gone.

In short, my shit's all fucked up and I need to know...do I need to reinstall the game, or do you think there is a fix?

I'd say it would probably be best to start on a new world or something and see if you still have the same problems. If not, its your world save,if so, it might be your install.

I've been getting most of my blocks from building underground tunnels but I do have a mine that I've have been sinking into underneath one of my castles. Gives me the creeps being alone though! I can only play maybe 30 mins at a time when I'm mining because of creepiness :lol

Do you have any idea how disheartening it is to lose 2 worlds like this? I almost want to just put the game away and go play something else. :lol

Of course it's him! I'd quit playing for a while if that happened to me. But at least we got the Halloween update coming up in a few days so at the very least starting over will feel a little different. You could just wander around adventuring and whatnot in all the new environments.

I can't wait to build my empire in the new update. I just wish Notch could add in smart NPC's to live in my little houses and do my bidding. But then I guess I should just buy Fable III.

Did you lose power or quit in the middle or something? (I don't remember if that happened the first time) At any rate, you should be hitting escape every couple of minutes to make it autosave, and you can manually save to the main menu every hour or so if you're paranoid.

I would zip my world directory and manually back it up periodically if it were super important. Also, are you on Windows 7? Isn't there the folder history option, that didn't work for you before but might work now?

At any rate, if you have twice lost stuff without doing anything odd at all (such as losing power or crashing) then you might really want to do a hard disk scan or something to make sure you're not experiencing a dying hard disk. Also, you mentioned a bunch of TNT -- is it possible you used an editor and it could have corrupted your save files?

Havent been playing much but ive done some work.

This entrance was pretty hard to build with constant lava leaks.

put your hell portal at the end, that way you can break glass for an emergency seal, should the ghasts invade your realm. -.-

Pandaman

Everything is moe to me
1). put it in base.
2). knock out every torch
3). hard and foggy mode.
4). upload to gaf and have people explore your now haunted superfortresses.

:p

My power went out, which was the genesis of all the issues. The restore option sort of worked, but it reverted back almost to the beginning of the world.

As for my TNT....all homegrown. Editors feel like cheating. Think I'm just going to start all fresh with the update and try from there on a new world save.

Favorite thing I've built in an MP server so far -

9qhbom.png

The view from the top -

zkqsd5.png

You can see the tops of the water flows from there; they let me ride up the tower at incredible speed in a boat.

The view down the hole in the middle of the top -

spf91x.jpg

Kind of boring except for the super depth.

Pool of water at the bottom of the hole -

For landing in at the end of the freefall so I don't kill myself once damage goes live. This will ultimately be the only available entrance to my castle.

Ahhh, okay. I thought this was a totally new world from scratch. Honestly it might sound best to start new in case your world is bugged somehow, and you can also try sending your level.dat (not sure if he needs other files) to Notch just in case he ever has time to look at it. Good luck, and make some backups occasionally if you make another world. :(

Well well well, with the server being down I played single player.

Went to a spot, dug straight down, found a cave, ventured through and found a spawner.

I killed all the enemies around the spawner (Landed in the middle of the mossy part but there was an exit so I placed a block to stop the spiders) and dumped a bucket of water on it to stop the spawning. I then placed some torches, dug out in a circle to find that it is pretty close to my spawn and then went back down and made a trap (which I need to modify).....

I now have a dedicated string spawner. I.... just wish that string was.... well.... useful!

Had it of been a creeper spawner I would have made a TNT factory (Who am I kidding, I'd have died)

Surprised nobody's beaten me to this, but Notch sent out preview builds of the Halloween update to two sites, which now have previews up:

IndieGames

PCGamer

Most of both of the previews is about Hell (now called the Slip), finally detailing how to build the portals.

EDIT: Gah, I spoke too soon... beaten by seconds!

I've got a 2 ghz MacBook with 4 GB of RAM but Minecraft keeps freezing on me after playing for oh five minutes, if even that long.

Any idea what might be wrong? I fixed my permissions and it made my game last another minute but still crashed...

That looks seriously awesome. Nevermind, I want to go to Hell now. [Not fond of 'The Slip' moniker. Doesn't feel Minecrafty to me.]

Well, in that case, you should be relieved. From Notch's twitter:

No, "The Slip" is not the final name. It's just a placeholder in the preview I sent out.

It's not a huge issue, really. One guy posted the name 'Nethermine' on Notch's blog, though, and I think that would work.

Contest!

I'm getting my girlfriend Minecraft for Christmas (among other things obviously). I want something nice to actually present to her, so I was hoping to get some custom art, print it off on a glossy cardboard stock, and present it to her as a "gift card".

This is the aspect ratio I have in mind

$15 paypal or a <=$15 game gifted on Steam if anyone could whip together some custom art. What I thought of immediately was a Minecraft logo and a creeper maybe set against the backdrop of a mountain-style Minecraft terrain at night. If you have a different idea, that's cool too, but I really like the iconic Creeper design and it's gotta include some sort of terrain or room or cave or something.

Post your submissions here if you're interested so that others can use it. Just post a decent quality PNG file and link to an ultra-high resolution file suitable for printing (I'm going to print it at 150 or 300 dpi and want it to be a full sized gift card, so keep that in mind).

Good god, searching for creeper images to suggest to you has led me to the unbelievable realm of creeper porn. WTF internet?

Watched the Indie gamer videos. Damn those Ghast fireballs hit hard. I'll definitely stock up on arrows before I venture out there.

Since the Slip seems to be all caverns, am I the only one asking himself what surprises on might await when hitting the upper world ceiling?

Hell/Slip doesn't look as difficult as I thought it would be. At the moment I don't if that's goo or bad news, but I'm liking what I see.

Biomes look awesome, and Notch said they'll get bigger, which is great. However, I'd like a word on the improvements to SMP. 31st can't come soon enough!

creeper spawners dont exist.

I wonder if you can use those flammable slip blocks in a furnace.

I'll also just go ahead and speculate that those "golden" blocks the previewers haven't figured out yet are a part for making lanterns.

This is all that matters. He could stop development of the game entirely and I wouldn't care so long as SMP gets fixed.
