urgh, I started a new world and played five in game days doing nothing but digging, haven't found a single piece of coal. I can't do anything, and mobs keep killing me. Maybe this world isn't meant to be.

Here's a tip: in my hundreds of hours playing this game, I've never seen a mob spawn in a spot in close proximity to myself, aside from in a dungeon with a spawner. It's safe to assume that if you're in a closed, relatively small space, even in darkness, you're safe. You can either sit in your completely dark house for night time, or an even quicker and dirtier way to stay safe at night is to just carry a stack of dirt with you and build yourself a tall dirt tower to stand on until the sun comes back up.

As for finding coal: stop digging! Check in small natural caves, or if you're too afraid to do that, then check the sides of cliffs/mountains where the stone is exposed.

yeah, I've been hiding in little dirt tombs, heh. I came out of he last one once the sun came up and there were 4 creepers right outside. Needless to say I didn't survive.

It's annoying as fuck and I've Tweeted to Notch twice about it. Why not try that yourself, maybe he'll figure it out (If he hasn't already fixed it for a future update) if more than one person complains about it. I sometimes feel I'm the only one who does not use WSAD.

Also I found a very complex, large and deep cave with a lot of coal / iron and gold but it is very very very far from my spawn/home. Any idea of the best way to find my way back and forth?

You don't need diamond to get obsidian. You just need some buckets. Water touching a lava source block will turn the lava into obsidian.

You don't need diamond to get obsidian. You just need some buckets. Water touching a lava source block will turn the lava into obsidian.

Right but you can also make your own obsidian structures without ever having to mine it by creating a mold in which to make the obsidian.

I've been having some severe issues on the current server, though.

- Setting off TNT kicks off everybody. I don't know if it's everybody near the TNT or everybody on the server, but even if I set off a single block, everybody near the block gets booted from the server.

- The other night, I was on with Pirata and ZealousD, and I was invisible. Not only that, but I was incapable of picking things up. Everybody disconnecting and reconnecting (due to the TNT issue) managed to make me visible again, but I still to this day can't pick anything up.

A current map of spawn is available here.

This map will be updated daily at 4 am (which takes some CPU cycles so be a good boy and be in bed by then).

There are no kits.

There are animals.

There is PvP.
