Wow, is this in Neocraft?
We could have a modern city community project like there maybe?

Personally I'd much rather love to do a giant community fortress (imagine my castle, but much bigger!).

Hopefully I'll get around to posting some ideas in regards to the server currently, and in the future, later on today.

EDIT:

Server map!

I'm having a disagreement with Jordanisgay1984 on the server
He built this thing in Al-Medina
2011-06-17_204128.png

First, I told him it doesn't fit in with the city.
I asked him to change it but he said it fits in fine, I don't think it does, at all, in a city based on a culture that is basically known for it's ornamental architecture, a box of sand is extremely out of place.
Since I'm not a mod on the server, it doesn't feel right for me to demand he change it, and since I haven't seen Ark I had to post this here.
Thoughts? should he or should he not change it?

Definitely looks out of place. The 1x1 blocks stand out. What is this? Burn it.

Edit: Someone already destroyed parts of it? o_O

yeah, he agreed to start rebuilding it to make it more ornamental. Not that I'm endorsing cutting the guy some slack, he is new to the game and he's still got a ways to go in terms of gripping the game and decorative technique.
I'll try and give him as many pointers as I can (i know him irl... I'm Jordan actually haha) to get him up to speed. He's not really experimented all that much with the single player element either which means that a lot of the stuff he is building is primitive sadly.

That's no problem, we're all still learning :)

I have an AMAZING build I want to do when pistons come in <3

OK, this is doing my nut in - has ANYONE come across a large and flat grassy plain on the server? There's one RIGHT behind Al-Medina, but that's too close to the city to start building there. I've walked for AGES trying to find some flat space that hasn't been built on yet, but it's mostly way too mountainous and I was hoping to not have to do a ton of landscaping :(

Afraid not :(

The only thing this server map doesn't seem to have, is flat grassy land lol.

I haven't played Minecraft in a while, and was wanting to play some with GAF. Since the old survival server seems to have been shut down, I don't know which one to join. Where are the majority of Gaffers playing?

I finished taking down a bunch of blocks just sitting in the sky lol.

If you could tell Jordanisgay1984 that I stuck his stuff in a box below his house that would be rad.
I put some extra blocks in to help him get restarted too :)

I try to update it once a day. I have been a bit busy lately, though, and haven't been able to update it (or even play minecraft, really) as often as I'd like.

It probably won't move water or lava the way you think it will. And even if it did, it wouldn't pour into a hole and fill it up.

As you can see from the video. When a piston expands into water, it deletes the water from that area. It does not push it to the side.
couldnt you just put a lava and water source on either side? piston closes, cobbe is created in the empty space when the lava/water meet. piston opens, pushing cobble away and creating a new empty space.

all that would be needed is for spike blocks on sticky pistons to destroy blocks. put one of that on the end of the line and you'll get infinite cobble just by standing near it.

Some pics of my projects.

My very latest mega project titled 'The Tube'.

That's a 129 block wide circle shaped hollow tube that is going to eventually reach from the top to the bottom. There are two other such tubes in my world but they are much smaller.

The Tube is a part of my unmodded/untweaked singleplayer world first created in September 2010. Here's a world render from today:

Most of the work on the world has been done underground. My MAIN mega project is to split the world in half from top to bottom with a 5-block-wide ravine. I then build stuff alongside and around it. So, yeah, The Ravine is basically a perpetuity project.

Here's a pic of one of its sections with pillars as ornaments. I plan to either embed more pillars or something else alongside The Ravine.

More pics along the ravine:

Tube stairs from top to bottom:

A short megatunnel. 91x91, reaching from bottom to top. Top part is made of glass.

The megatunnel is at the end of a much smaller but much longer tunnel:

As you can see from the world pic, the tunnel is connected to the ravine.

SD that build looks awesome in the thumbnails but the full size pics are taking way too long to load for me. Anyone else having probs viewing them?

I'm also having problems downloading pics from Abload, but rarely. 99% of the time Abload is awesome.

Have you worked out how many blocks you'd have to mine out yet? The number itself would probably make me choke!

Nope, but I have a hunch, of sorts.

I've mined around 300,000 of various blocks since April 19th when statistics was implemented. I started to really get to work on those mega projects in January or so. That is around six months of time used: 6 x 150000 = 900000. So, maybe one million is the total. Could be less or much more. Hard to say.

I'm running into a weird glitch. I put 8 coal and 64 of whatever I'm cooking in the furnace, but I'm repeatingly getting 1 item not being cooked. This has happened multiple times... I've removed the furnaces and placed them again, didn't seem to do anything.

It's not really annoying... Just bizarre lol.

That is a weird glitch. The furnaces are supposed to be exactly timed to do 8 items per 1 piece of coal. So a stack of 64 should always take exactly 8 coal. It seems like it's running out slightly before the last piece finishes. You should watch it as it gets to the end and see how far processed the item gets before the coal runs out.

I have to say, if you complete this project, you'll have won Minecraft.

Also; I didn't manage to post the stuff I wanted to over the weekend, I've been busier than I thought I was going to be. So I'll hopefully try and get that done sometime this week, hopefully in the next few days.

I got this bug and studied the thing a little. I found a workaround.

Click slower when you put the coal. If you click too fast it's like the first coal will fuck and won't count. If you put coal in at a speed of 1 per second (maybe 2 per second), the glitch will never happen.

If I watch the stuff cook, it will come out to 64.

And I always put the stack of 8 coal in first, so I don't think putting it in slow would do me anything :u

I always put the stock to cook first and the coal after.
Don't trust the number of item in the furnace. The furnace indicates the right thing when the bug happens. I have 8 coals in there (furnace indicating 7) and it will not cook for 8. If I put it in there more slowly, it still writes 7 (wich is fine, coal zero doesn't display a number) but it will cook for the whole 8.

Got some good work done on the gaf server today. It's amazing how your base develops. I started out just burrowing into the side of the rock by the big carved-out skull so I wouldn't get killed... then I kept digging backwards until I hallowed out a chamber in the rock. I then put a 3x25ish window facing the skull canyon, and I dug out toward the opposite side in a 1x2 tunnel. It led to a forest that took 5 gaming days to cut down due to the ban on flint. I made a big entrance displaying the Chinese character 忍, Indicating that it was a ninja lair, which was more or less my excuse for making it a visually unimpressive maze with a few death traps. lol

Today, I extended to the bridge/walkway to the ocean, making it resemble an old fort. I then built a wooden house on top of the fort... so, due to my strange building habits, I went from one side of the mountain to the other side, and now I am not even living in the 'ninja lair' anymore. What a fun game! More work left to go.

Alright I'm gunna put this out there now before I forget:

What do people think about making the server public, but with a whitelist. Ala posting it up on the MC forums? The server payment comes up again in just over a month, and I'd like to see 17 players online at least once. I know I haven't been active lately but I plan to change that this week.

Hell I'd play on it all the time. Couldn't figure out how to join so I figured that was a entry exam and I failed.

I wouldn't be against the idea but how do you manage who's on the list and who's not? How do we determine someone is to be trusted?

I'm using mcmap and mcmapgui, the mcmap was command line and kind of annoying so I switched to the GUI version of it. It does a decent job, I posted a pic of my base a few days ago if you want a sample of the quality it puts out.

I have nothing against it, but I think we need to be aware of the consequences of doing so. There will be more griefing, and if we want to avoid that we will need better ways of preventing and controlling it. Or we can just simply accept that as part of the server from now on and take our buildings and constructions lightly and less seriously. Because the server would change, and it would not be the same as it is now. You will get many more people wandering off for long treks, running up the world file size. You will get much more people building out of place things, our community projects with themes would be much harder to "enforce". And we would all have to be okay and comfortable with the occasional greifing and toe stepping, because it would happen. But yeah, we would get more users.

I guess the question I have is this:

What is more important, having 17 players online regularly, or having a secure and safe server we can build things in with a community feel? If we can achieve both, then hell yeah I'm all for it. Of course, we run the risk of it becoming so popular and busy that none of us will ever be able to log on, lol.

This is basically my feeling on the subject. Also, having a whitelist will require a bit more work for the admin, and it would be difficult to tell if someone is a griefer before they're added to the list. If we could work it so that a mod or admin is almost always online, it would help prevent this, though the mods may have to do a bit more "moderating", as opposed to being able to focus on projects.

I jumped on yesterday for the first time in a week or so. I definitely have taken the necessary break because I sort of burnt myself out when the server first went online. Granted I'm not the largest contributor to the community I have been there for a couple of the community projects and I have really enjoyed how well they have come along. I like the idea of having more people online but as Mengy described it comes with a lot more risk and has potential to dilute the work we have done thus far. I don't really think we can say hold on it is just the beginning of summer, people will pick it up again anymore; however, I can't say that I'm eager to see the astonishing world of NeoCraft opened up to the public. I by no means have been a pivotal player on the server, but I have logged my fair share of hours and do feel sentimental towards the progress and the creation of NeoCraft.

I was of course planning to add more moderators, and eventually admins. But all but 1 of the people I was considering seem to have disappeared.

In regards to anti-griefing, I'm not 100% of what is actually possible with Multiplay, but we'll see how that goes.

Well, in regards to long treks, the file size has grown by something like 40mb in the last 2 weeks because people have just gone off walking. Although to me, I'm not getting the community feel that the server started with, I'm lucky to log on and see ~5 other people online, and usually no one speaks.

I guess the other alternative is that I reduce the player limit from 17 to something like 12. I wonder how many lurkers are here..

Easier to manage too I suppose. Right now it's like you're paying for 17 players for nothing. :/

Nothing is being payed, the payment is every 3 months, the next one is sometime during the end of July, which is why I'm bringing this up now.

At the end of the day, it's up to you guys, I'm just throwing ideas out there and seeing what responses I get.
