Nothing indicate the clouds would stay there right?
If that was a "fix" to make them above the limit, they should get above the limit again.

Nope, as I said a few posts up, Jeb is currently tweeting that the clouds will stay as-is, as he wants people to be able to build above the clouds.

There's no news whether or not there will be anything done about clouds going through buildings and stuff.

I am kinda torn on the cloud issue, I understand it would be cool to have buildings enveloped by clouds and yeah it would be great. However I still remember when the clouds would float through enclosed buildings and it looked like crap.

Now I know they "fixed" the issue and by fixed they simply moved the clouds above the height limit that you could build at so you wouldn't get clouds floating through buildings. If they have really fixed the clouds then great, but if not I would prefer the clouds to be above the height limit to stop them floating through buildings.
Same.

It did make me laugh how they stated they "fixed" the issue, but only by simply moving the clouds further up.

As of now the clouds are staying around level 128, and if I had to guess, they will still pass through buildings and walls and such. I don't see that changing anytime soon, even though it would be nice. I'm not too concerned about it personally. Before it was a big issue because we were starved for space and needed to use every bit of height we could muster. Now in 1.2, the cloud layer marks the half-way point of the world. There is tons of space left above them to build. Besides, I think it will be cool to look down from huge heights and see the clouds far below.

Although, a good compromise would be to move them up a bit, like say 30 or 40 blocks above the highest land generation. That would give us more room to build mountain top buildings without having clouds flow through them, but still allow lots of room above them to build.

There's no easy way to fix that could issue anyways. The cloud doesn't know if its inside or outside a structure you built. We would need to place some manually some "no clouds" blocks or something the likes and this would make the game less intuitive for no good reasons.

Well, the cloud wouldn't have to know if it's inside or outside, but maybe just disappear when it hits ANY block, then reappear after it hasn't hit a block for X amount of time, or something like that.

I think if Lava and Water can recognize that it's touching something, why cant the clouds?

Just as a guess, the lava and water are handled entirely differently from the clouds. All water and lava blocks are handled as any other block in the game (dirt, stone, etc), while the clouds are just a graphical effect. Sure, they're block-shaped, but they're not part of the same system.

Well this seems like it could be done easily enough and Notch even said he would try it.

With both solutions from the last posts, clouds could possibly reappear inside large buildings...

Yeah, I figured mine had some flaws, but Treefingers' could work pretty well, given the proper rules for the cloud map. For example, something like "remove the clouds when they hit a block, and don't make them reappear until after they've traveled X amount of blocks with nothing over them". This way they wouldn't reappear as long as there's a ceiling of some sort over them.

I'd be ok with them not re-appearing at all tbh.

Clouds probably don't do any calculations as it is. Adding constant checks around, inside and above the clouds would be quite a bit of calculations added to the game's footprint. It could probably work as a new higher setting though.

EDIT: Hm, yeah, it could be encoded into the chunk upon loading it though. That would require a slight modification of the new file format, but nothing huge with how it seems structured based on Jeb's blog post.

That could be a nice strategy if the clouds were only checking if blocked placed by players are OVER them. Still wouldn't be perfect though. No cloud under sky islands...

yes but this would mean that if a cloud would hit a mountain then they wouldn't appear at all.

I was about to say that they should be invisble next to other blocks like stated above but I like the fog feeling when I'm uphigh on a mountain a cloud gets near. Actually I think they should develop the clouds idea and make a fog haha

Can't wait to build my 256 blocks high tower with walls of lava.

Problem, GAF? :p

Speaking of which I'll probably attempt this after my current castle...

800px-Hohenschwangau_-_Schloss_Neuschwanstein1.jpg

I doubt I'll do it alone though.
I've wanted to make this castle for a while but haven't built up the motivation beyond getting lots of shots of it from google images - every time I make a start I stall because it seems like such a big project!

Might make a start once the sky height limit increase comes in since I'd like to build it on a hill overlooking the surrounding land like it actually is.

Well, that's the name of the game, though :).

Honestly, I'm kind of scared about this next update, because having a hugely increased height limit is just the kind of thing that might drag me back into this game. I still remember my initial disappointment with the build ceiling when I first bought the game. Heck, the first thing I did once I had a couple stacks of dirt was to make 1x1 tower on top of the highest hilltop I could find. The disappointment when I had to stop building after about 15 blocks was rather memorable.

I'm pretty sure we all have stories of ours where the height limit hit us square on the head. I still have the first world I ever made, way back in alpha (back when your entire map was either a rain map or a snow map). I spawned right at this awesome mountain and promptly began to convert it into a base, digging tunnels all over the thing and building entrances and balconies all over it. Eventually I began to build towers and walls on top of the mountain, and I soon realized that I didn't have much space up there to build due to the world height limits. I wanted a castle up there but couldn't.

Stuff like that shouldn't ever be a problem again once 1.2 hits, not reasonably anyway. :)

There's always going to be a point where you can't build a castle on your castle on your castle.

When do you guys expect 1.2 to be released?

I think we're getting ahead of ourselves here, lets wait for the height limit to be raised first.

There isn't a date yet for 1.2, but Jeb wants to get the new snapshot (with the new biome data and height limit) out tomorrow.

Just remember that even when patch 1.2 does release, it will be some time until bukkit and Multiplay update, so Neocraft will lag behind again a bit. We've got quite some time until this hits the server.

Why do they take so freaking long?!

to stay one version behind you just back-up your .jar file, or is there an option to refuse the update when it's out ?

And I'll just leave it there because I think Ark may have missed my message :p my Minecraft name is Kentsui (that was me lurking around Skycity those last few days and just being amazed at how fast it is growing )

Oh and, is that huge excavation that -SD- posted a few pages back supposed to be on the server ?

So does magma, oh god of lava :p

I'll take the role as God Of Bad Advice (This is one thing I pride myself upon), but I'm not taking up the position of God Of Lava and other related titles. It wasn't me who built the massive tower of doom, if anything our friend SMG should get the blame for this one.

And since I recently seem to have become a God where's my tributes eh? One statue? BAH! I want diamonds and gold otherwise I might just start handing out some more advice to unsuspecting newcomers, I think we can all agree that won't turn out well for anyone involved.

Cain, it was actually an awesome idea. It' major flaw though, was location, location, location.

For 1, it blocked the road for the new land mass. 2: you better be glad that Minecraft isn't physics based, or that heavy ass thing would have tipped that island over :p.

and 3:, it really didn't fit the feel of the island what everyone was going for. I think if you were to do something like that NEXT to the island, it would work. not to mention, after we put the fires out, the base of it looked so awesome.

Not sure if anyone posted this but redstone-controllable lights of some sort will be in tomorrow's snapshot according to Jeb.

That's going to be great until shutting your house's lights off also turns on creepers spawning. It'll probably be used for zany stuff, looking forward.

Thanks, Im gonna do that on the next island Roche builds.

Everything was fine till you told me to use sand. I was going to just throw water in it.

So, keep living up to your name oh God of Bad Advice :p

I apologize if its been discussed ad nauseam but how is the iOS version of Minecraft?

The world is really small (although still procedurally generated) and there's no resource gathering involved. It's s creative mode, but without exploration too. It's basically just the building part of the PC version, but with slightly worse controls. I picked it up for one dollar during some Android ultra sale months back, and it was worth that. Not sure how much it is normally.

I'm assuming the Android version is identical feature-wise.

They've added survival mode in the newest patch but it's very basic.

So I thought I'd give you guys a preview of my new MEGA-Project. I started it on a Superflat world, so I don't have to focus too much on terraforming. Or at least, I'll just be building the land I want, not destroy and then building. So anyway, here's a little sneakpeek
