Miniature Gaming-Age (WH40k, Warmachine, Etc.)

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of painting some Circle Orboros. Thinking about doing a paint scheme similar to Warcraft's Night Elves. Fair skin with dark blue, purple and silver on the armor and clothing, instead of the green and gold shown in marketing pictures.

...and I have been eyeballing some of the Age of Sigmar minis. These Maligants look awesome:

The local hobbyists seem to be really soured on Sigmar though (a lot of long time Fantasy Battle players) and it feels unlikely they are going to start playing Sigmar any time soon.

You may be thinking of me - though my query was actually about how people thought the models in the current 2p box would fare under Mark III, as some of them were not well regarded rules-wise.

Thanks for pointing them out though! They appear to be pretty nice values.

Staffy: a different paint job can go a LONG way to making you more excited for an army. Glad you are getting excited for your Circle. Be prepared for slightly worse casting quality than you are used to though. PP minis often having mold lines and flash and gaps in awful places. The Maligants are pretty boss, and their start collecting box is such a good deal, it's really too bad that the world has turned against AoS. Here's hoping the points system will bring some people back into the fold!

Palmer: They also announced a more active strategy for fixing models that are unbalanced. They will release updates on war room and their site as needed and then twice a year release card packs of the updated minis.

Ah, well based on newer info now, I sort of feel like the 2p hordes box might not be great, cause it's all medium based infantry, which seems to have been kicked in the teeth moreso than anything else, EXCEPT for Khador Man o' Wars, which are in the Khador side of the Warmahcine 2p box.

I still say they're a fantastic deal overall though. Think of it like buying a warcaster and some jacks, and getting a unit for free.

Yeah, I'm staying caught up but haven't posted much here. At this point, I'm sorta waiting for Circle spoilers. the biggest WTF change for me is the new mechanic for spending focus to reduce damage, instead of camping it for pure armor.

Deathripper light warjack
Bane Warrior Unit (10 models)

Cygnar
Cygnar Introductory Guide
Warcaster Major Beth Maddox

Random fun question for this thread, what is everyone's favorite miniature? I personally will always and forever have a soft spot for this guy:

Though I would probably come up with something else if I thought about it more, but truly this guy always comes first to mind for me.

Fun question! Can't wait to see what everyone posts. The one you posted sure is one cool looking elf.

As for me, the first thought was this guy. Granted, I don't have years of miniature background, so it might change with time.

I want to buy one and make an Ultramarine captain out of it at some point.

The Emperor's Champion was the centerpiece of my best friend's army when we were younger. It is indeed a cool mini.

The elf I posted is a wood elf lord with greatweapon from Warhammer Fantasy if anyone is wondering by the way.

I have such a nerdboner right now. I'm mourning the lack of plastic doors though.

I'm going to start doing recess shadowing on my imperial knight soon but can't decide between agrax earthshade or nuln oil. Anyone have any advice? The armour panels are mostly administratum grey (light grey).

I'd do both.

Nuln oil for the shading, earthshade for grime. Pull the earthshade out of the recesses a little to do some weathering. Maybe practice it a little on a Space Marine shoulder pad or something to see if it's an effect you can pull off and get good results.

I think as far as weathering is concerned I'm going to go for a very lightly worn, fresh off the production line look. Some light scratches, a tiny bit of chipped paint here and there and some heat damage to the melta barrel/exhausts but otherwise clean.

I'm painting all of the Space Hulk Blood Angel terminators and a 5 man squad of Ultramarine terminators as well.

Here are my first 2 test models layered up and blacked out. I have a 5 man Dark Angel terminator squad from the Dark Vengeance boxed set up next (or possibly during!). I'm doing this for co-op Space Hulk games. After all 25+ terminators are painted, I'm picking up a box of Space Wolve terminators because why not. Space Hulk at my house is a big deal, lol.

I always thought the Blood Angels should be a bit ghastly and ghoulish, so I am painting them as such. I want them to have a real dark side to them that the painting should evoke.

The human team looks pretty bad, but the orcs are awesome. Does Reikland mean it's not AoS Bloodbowl, but Old World Bloodbowl?

The Nurgle, Skaven, elves, and Gobbo teams look like the upcoming teams afterlaunch. With the exception of the Elves which look incredibely bland thay all look pretty good with the Nurgle and Gobbos designs winning out.

Also confirmation the GW Specialist games division is back with the new Blood Bowl, Epic, and Warhammer Quest being there efforts.

Speaking of Warhammer Quest how is the new one? Any good breakdowns on how it works?

There is some good overviews of Silver Tower over at boardgamegeek: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1575773/depth-comparison-1995-version
and https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1575561/first-impressions

I am very excited for the return of Epic, also the plans for LOTR are sounding great too. I am very optimistic about GW right now, and this post from dakkadakka reinforces that:

I don't know if this is relevant news but this caught my eye while browsing beasts of war. Someone asked the person doing the blogs what he enjoyed most about warhammer fest I found the response interesting to say the least.

Poster 1: "What have you enjoyed most?
Seeing as you are well informed about all things in the world of wargaming, how much of what you have seen has been surprising?"

Blogger/reporter: The really big surprising thing has been the candid attitude of GW. They are still cagey about some things but admit their mistakes and are truly making an effort to engage and learn. Also the new Hobbit Dwarves are epic AND Warhammer Quest!

Poster 2: What have they been saying?

Blogger/reporter: Admitted they dropped the ball on community engagement and are focusing more on creating games to play rather than just miniatures to collect.

Talked about how they are focusing more on being creative first and foremost

End of post

Man I wish Kevin was in charge sooner but hey what's done is done at least we are now aware how GW's business stance has changed somewhat we have to see if they keep with it in the future. Still so far they are doing good for example total war warhammer they endorsed modding something the community really wanted. GW allowing mods for their game which is unheard of. I hope GW sticks to this mindset in the future. What I find interesting personally is the pushing of the video games which is also good as well and involving the community in developing the rules.

Let's hope they do that for 40k.

Eh, generic elves. I've no idea why they were revived back in 4th and I've still no idea why they're going to continue being a thing. Going by the CAD images, I'm loving the dwarves. The deathroller is a heck of an update over the previous models.

I'm glad they are not touching the rules for Blood Bowl, it's a great game. I just hope they do some team balancing. I know it felt like some teams were designed to be more "fun" than really competitive, but still would like to see some list tweaks.

So basically all of the MKIII Warmachine/Hordes cards got leaked. I've seen portions of it, but haven't been able to find the full spoilers. It apparently started on some Polish forum.

It feels like Mercs have gotten significantly better, while Cryx has been hit the hardest.

If anyone has a good link to the full spoilers, let us know! I'll post it if I can find them.

Hey SillyEskimo, your paint station, paints of choice, camerawork and painting kind of remind me of FTW's Ron..

Is that you, by chance?

No sir, I am not that dude!

I've always found it funny how similar everyone's paint station is though. Also, how everyone seems to dab excess paint off on their thumb or thumbnail.

I was going to post a big breakdown of my paint area and hobby supplies, but I have no idea where it should go. We have kind of hijacked this thread a bit for painting because it goes hand in hand with wargaming, but its just not the same. Likewise with the boardgaming thread. Even the scale modeling or official 40k OTs do not mix well with miniature painting. I contemplated making a new thread in OT about this hobby, but I'm sure it would drop off the front page pretty fast!

I had actually started the post 2-3 times but I always end up deleting it. I think I need to find a dedicated board to post on.

On topic, I like my Space Marines shiney and new, as if they are fresh on the battlefield initiating a surgical strike. Lore dictates these guys keep their armor in mint condition, so I like to keep them that way. I'll save the ragged, weathered, and beat up look for my Imperial Guard! I also deviate from codex color scheme a bit. It tends to stifle creativity a great deal and make every army "samey". I also like a nice, cartoonish "pop". Realisim has its place, but I think it makes a large army a bit drab.

One more thing on my painting style. I tend to imagine that much of the detail on marine armor is engraved, with details inset, so I paint them accordingly. Base color goes a very long way IMO and I tend to do an almost monochromatic look to my marines. It makes them pop and unites the look much more. It also makes hero models stand out a bit when they have more decoration and color than the rank and file.

I don't feel like talking about painting miniatures is too much off topic in this thread. I mean, most of the minis are from miniature games and that is what this thread is about.

Also this thread seems to have it's dry spells as it is, so please do post your work if you ask me!

And yeah, I have the same approach with my marines. No dirt on my Ultramarines, no sir. They venerate the Holy Emperor by keeping themselves pure on the outside and inside.

I have no issues with painting/modeling stuff in here. It's a core component of the hobby, even if I don't particularly enjoy that aspect myself.

I'm pretty lucky in that my wife enjoys painting, so I actually just assemble/prime most of my models while she does the hard(imo) part of painting them.

Its interesting that when I'm working on something like Space Hulk because I can post my mini pics in like, 5 different threads lol.

I hate to bombard the board, but I think people will be interested in several different threads.

The human team looks pretty bad, but the orcs are awesome. Does Reikland mean it's not AoS Bloodbowl, but Old World Bloodbowl?

Basically Blood Bowl exists in an Old World where war was replaced with 'football'. As such conflict is solved on the sports field and the End Times never happened. It's an alternate reality :)

I still don't get the hate for AoS though.

Do it. DO IT NOW!

I also like my marines shiny new with a little pop.. Here are some recently finished (unbased) models I did:

ERMYGERD!
Hey guys, just wondering how to properly shake a bottle of paint. Especially greens and reds come out still pretty thin.

Leunam

Member
I put in one or two airsoft BB's so I can have an agitator in there to shake up the paint properly. Shake hard for at least five seconds I say, and in more than one direction.

Thin is good, unmixed adhesive and color isn't. The liquid pouring out is almost clear.

I've had similiar problems with my red paint. No matter how much I'd shake the pigment would come out separate. It's gotten better as the bottle now has a bit more room for the paint to shake.

In other news, I'm planning to buy the Knight box with a Chaos player. He has expressed he wants to build his Knight with two cannons. That would leave me with the change to pick anything from the other parts. I'm thinking melta and Avenger gatling for my Knight's arms. (Crusader isn't it?)

Any comments or tips? Could I magnetise either arm to also be a chainsword?

Mixing old paint? I find getting my cock
tail stick
out for a damned good stir does the trick. Perhaps I've been lucky...

Also, I haven't painted in nearly 4 years, so I'll probably come to regret this statement at some point in the not-too-distant future...

Just finished my imperial knight, (mostly) happy with how it's turned out. I wanted to keep this one looking pretty fresh off the production line but the next one's going to be pretty damaged , dirty and beat up.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
Looks really nice. A little too clean for my tastes but that's a deliberate choice and you nailed it.

How did you do the gun barrel effect?

Thanks! And yeah, clean by choice to fit in with the rest of my imperial army. My other army is Orks, so I get to get my grime on when painting them.

The barrel was a gold base with a sepia wash to start with, lightly drybrushed silver. Then from the dangerous end I used blue, then purple, then sepia washes in bands, applying the next while the previous one was still wet to blend them together slightly. I had to repeat those bands a few times to get the colour strong enough, making sure to dry my wash brush off regularly (and making sure to stop it from collecting in the holes too much). Then when it was all nice and dry, a really really heavy drybrush with silver on the very end of the barrel, where it's so hot that it's burned clean.

Thanks guys.

I say just go for it, as long as you leave off the armour panels and don't glue the arms/weapons on it's incredibly easy to paint them up and attach it all at the end. Although this is coming from the guy who managed to glue the legs on backwards on the one he assembled for a family member. Thank god plastic glue takes a little while to set properly.
