Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

That worked, now to learn all these note combos.

edit: So I'm assuming certain Horns have certain notes. As in each horn has three notes?
Yes, each horn has 3 notes tied to it and the songs you can play with each specific horn are limited based on whatever notes you have. So no song will ever require 4 unique notes.

I liked the hunting horn as I downed the rabbit very quickly with it.. I thought it was overpowered or maybe I got more skillz after trying the 3DS demo for several hours with different weapons ( and many frustrating outcomes).
This game is really an 'acquired taste'.. Hated it at first, and now I am really considering getting the european WiiU bundle for this...if only I had a clearer view of the WiiU's future I wouldn't hesitate :(

You can always sell it later

Maybe this can help?

http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Hunting_Horn

Wish I could help but I never touched it in P3.

The lack of power was one thing but I was always really turned off of the HH by the fact that they all had different song sets. I change weapons constantly and having one extra thing to relearn was just not worth it, especially since all the games that actually had the HH, I was a solo hunter in.

It seems the power thing was fixed since P3rd and now I have online. I was pretty impressed by the one in the demo, but I have no idea how representative of HHs it is since who knows what kind of stats the demo gear has. I will say it's a bit harder to KO with than the hammer, but if it's a monster like Jho that's hard as hell to KO multiple times anyways I could see myself using it in multiplayer. For that one fight, at least...the moveset does seem like it'd be good for him.

Do Monster have a life bar?

Yes but you can't see it.

Seriously though that's part of the game. You just start to get a feeling for it after a while and learn to identify the signs, like constant raging or retreating.

There is one other option - with a certain armor skill, you can see exactly when the monster is low enough health to be ready for capture.

You usually don't need to worry about the monster healing itself, that generally only happens when they run off to sleep, and by then you've already won. Unless you're REALLY new at fighting the monster, don't know where its lair is, and forgot to hit him with a paintball...I've been there.

I'm really pumped for this game (Wii U version). I was a huge fan of Tri and clocked up just under 300hrs on it. I only used one weapon setup (Paralyze SnS) the whole time and only played online games. It has to be one of my fave games of all time (right behind Shadow of the Colossus)

So glad they have added heaps of new monsters to this version, but real dissapointed they have only added what seems to be 1 new stage? Looks like they have taken the arenas out and replaced them with 2 new arenas and another stage for fighting the new Jhen Moran type monster. So yea that seems like 4 new stages but only 1 seems to be a proper stage (e.g. harvesting, multiple areas etc).

Anyone have any more details on any new stages or extra content for the old ones? Apparently you can fight at night but you could do that in Tri as well in some quests.

I main GS and I can do Lagombi in under 5 mins before he even leaves the first screen.

Just keep practicing. I find GS to be one of the fastest weapons. DB and LS are also very fast.

Ya, I'm beating him in around 5 minutes now but that's after like 15 times with the GS. I was beating it in around or under 5 with the other weapons on my first try and I've never used those weapons before, I used the GS in Tri for over 200 hours.

It's just weird, like I said, whenever I use the GS in the demo the monsters are constantly in rage mode. I open with a might pill and a triple charge and then he goes rage and sliding all over the place making me spend more time just running around. With the other weapons they barely ever are raging. So it's not really that I'm having 'issues' with the monster or getting hit or anything like that, it's just that my openings are shorter because they are in rage mode so often and so that is causing my time to be a bit longer.

In the end it doesn't really matter if I'm killing it in 5 minutes or 10 minutes, it was more just an observation I had and was wondering if other people are experiencing more rage mode while using the GS.

Rage mode is based on the damage they've taken, the weapon doesn't mean anything. You're just better with the GS so you're doing more damage and pissing them off faster. Since the fight hasn't gone on for as long and they aren't being exhausted, it feels like they are spending more time raging and less in 'tired' mode. Maybe use the slap a bit more? I'm not a huge GS user post-MHFU so I'm not sure how much exhaust/KO that does.

There are some monsters that rage instantly when you use certain items, like sonics on Narga, but I don't think bunny/plesioth have anything like that.

So does the demo show the entire game in a nutshell?

Not even close. In the real thing you'll need to gather and craft your items, armor and weapons. There's item combining which has huge ramifications for bowgun usage, armor skills which change the way you fight, monster tracking (in the demo you have a skill which does this automatically) etc. And of course multiplayer, online on Wii U.

i love it on 3ds, took a while to get accustomed to the size on the OG but it runs exceptionally well. capcom have definitely been doing justice to this hardware.

This demo reminds me on how will I be doing research to upgrade my weapons when the game releases.

Done a lot of work on my weapons for Tri hahahaha hours and hours of hunting incoming

Loving the demo so far. I've beaten Lagombi with everything but Light/Heavy Bowgun, ready to start tackling Plesioth.

So does the demo show the entire game in a nutshell?

No. The real game has fairly robust tutorial missions that explain all of the game's many mechanics and give you a good feel for combat with some easier hunts before throwing you at any difficult bosses. The demo completely lacks the critical step of customizing your equipment/item loadout and sticks you with a time limit that even experienced players might have trouble with. It also has no multiplayer, which is a huge component of how Monster Hunter is normally played.

The demo an exceedingly poor representation of the entire game.

How do you use GS?

I made this guide for Tri over 2 years ago.

To clarify, an unsheathe attach is pressing X while moving without your Greatsword drawn, the "infinite combo" is alternating between the side sweep (A) and uncharged overhead swing (X), and the side smack is pressing X after an overhead swing or unsheathe attack. You can also press X again after a side-smack to do a second, bigger downward swing.

And yeah, something I didn't mention on the flowchart: You need to roll immediately after doing an overhead/unsheathe attack! The "lifting the sword back up" animation is extremely long, so just mash B until you roll and cancel it.

So how is the gamepad performance on the game? I plan to play the game with the gamepad, but I'm not sure.

It's just fine if you ask me. The idea of having half a dozen peripherals such as a wiimote, CCP, usb keyboard etc sprawled in front of me during online play did not really appeal to me, and I like the idea of using the touch screen for quickly combining items in the inventory.

I haven't actually used the gamepad functions much, but I'm comfortable with it as a controller. I suppose if I can get used to the claw on PSP I can use anything, but I don't see any reason not to stick with the gamepad at this point.

Still wondering if I can route all game audio to the gamepad headphone output in the full version. I'm going to keep asking until I get to the bottom of this.

Ill try these GS tips today.
I really like the feel but I know I can get better at it. Nothing greater than smacking up a monster with a big ass sword.

I'm going to try out MH Portable 2 on PSP... brother gave me it ages ago and I've never gotten into it.

MHF2 is really outdated now. Couldn't even combine items directly in your box back then. It's also much harder than the third generation games.

It was my intro to the series but really no reason to play it if you can get Freedom Unite, which is that game's 'expansion' much like 3U is to Tri.

I was taught never to do the infinite combo. If you have time to infinite combo, you should be charging for another triple charge.

I don't use GS often but when I do I focus entirely on unsheathe charges with the unsheathe critical skill. And then I go find a huge raw GS with negative affinity like the diablos one. But now there's that follow-up super charge so I dunno if this is even optimal anymore.

GS is a bit slow and heavy, but it's an excellent jack of all trades weapon. It's extremely fun to use once you get used to it, and there are almost no bosses that it has a major problem with. Just watch where you're swinging in multiplayer and you'll be credit to team.

Getting Critical Draw and focusing on usheathe attacks (charged and uncharged) was still the best DPS for Greatsword in Tri. Infinite combo isn't optimal, but it is easier for a new player than re-sheathing and trying to get another unsheathe attack in, since that's very reliant on knowing the target's movement patterns.

Great Sword is more interesting than I thought, especially when you learn to move with it, but also the infinite combo thing. Same for long sword.

I got farther in beating Plesioth with GS than DS or LS. Feels like the reach is better, plus blocking when you need to is nice.

I beat Plesi easily with Hammer, or SA, but in the water with the Dual Swords, I feel like I'm always out of reach. Of course, I probably just need more practice.

Thanks, I guess I'll stick with it, then.

crit draw <3

So many frustrating hours farming Diablos to get the parts I needed. So many!

...Though it's really my fault for wanting the whole set instead of just making the gloves and getting Crit Draw with copycat armor, a talisman, and the appropriate gems.

Does anyone want to play MHTri online (NA) on a new profile later today? I feel like it would be fun.

Around 4:30PM EST.

I totally would if I wasn't at work. I'd be up for doing that later tonight though around 8pm EST. I only have around 60 hours of MH experience between MHFU and MH Tri. Not sure if you're looking for someone that's actually good at the game.

I'm game to go at 8pm

I'm down for starting a new character in Tri also. On Est time, any time is fine. I was sad to see that I only had 80 hours into the game since the last time I played.

I'll be going on MH Tri in about an hour or so (NA version, same username, it's 10 AM here). Want to put in a bit more time with the game before Capcom sadly shuts down the server forever two months from now.

We usually play on Valor 4 / Gate 8 / City 18.

I'll be there. Not sure if you wanted to do the start a new character thing too, but the Wii I'll be using only has a newer hunter on it. Transferred all my data to my Wii U and found out the hard way the other day that MH saves can't be copied and I won't be able to use the Wii U until much later tonight. I just finished the 1 star quests last night with the new hunter, but I can start again from scratch if everyone wants to do that.

Now, the only question I have so far; I'm getting the retail Wii U version of this. Is it going to kill my disc drive with how much switching between zones I'll have to do?
Possibly. I know people who've had issues with their Wii drives due to Tri but it's probably the luck of the draw since I've logged well over 1000 hours on Tri and my Wii drive still works. The possibility does make the digital version more enticing though.

I'm going eshop on Wii U mostly for loadtime reasons, but wear on the drive is another nice bonus. Since I'm going to be playing this a lot. Plus there are no promotions or bundles in Canada so I might as well save some money via the deluxe digital thing.

Toru posted that comparison in the other thread, it shows retail disc/internal memory/HDD/SSD loadtimes. The area loadtime differences aren't huge, but it does make a difference when previewing armors.

It's not unreasonable to think nintendo might let us install our games to flash memory or a HDD someday, though.

I tried the 3DS demo and didn't like it at all. Reminded me too much of the older PSP versions that I didn't care for.

I tried it on Wii U 2 days later and was blown away. I'm not sure if it was because of the class I picked (lance w/ giant shield) or having the pictures crisp in 1080p, but now I'm seriously considering getting this game.

On first attempt, the controls in this game are indeed pretty awkward, as I remembered them back when I rented the Wii version.

I got stuck at the bottom of a climbable surface for like five minutes before I fumbled with the controls enough to realize that I had to sheath my sword with the item button, only then would the HUD display which button I'm supposed to press in order to climb up. The item menu controls also show that this game has a very contorted control system that would probably have to be rebuilt if Capcom every wanted the franchise to be a big success outside of Japan.
