Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Review Thread

Didn't need reviews to know this game would be incredible and that I'd be putting countless hours into it, however its really good to see how positively the media is receiving it. Can't wait until Friday!

Try different weapons, see what feels good. Once you pick one stick with it for a while and try to figure it out. A lot of the fun is figuring out weapons (and monsters). Find people to play online with, look at what they do, ask them questions. It's more fun to play with people, easier to learn from them as well.

If you fail a lot, try to remember that the game is tough but fair. Unless you're severely undergeared, most failures are typically your own fault, not a case of bad luck or rng.

Thanks y'all! Is there a well known online community to find mh4u players to play online with?

yes, me. will buy it on 3DS though. i just cant resist :(

I would have preferred Wiiu/PS4/Vita myself but after trying the New 3DS put i find that it will be good enough for me

The wait for 4th gen has been so long that Im just dealing with the cards we are dealt at this point

Hmmm no, I thought you adjust the camera using the on screen D-Pad?
You can do that too!

You can place it behind you with L, lock-on-monster with the big button on the bottom-left of the touch screen (when in the same area as a large monster), which will keep the monster centred in the main screen, and make smaller adjustments with the touch-screen d-pad, all at the same time. You can also change which supporting elements you want on the touch screen, like items/map/status/camera, and where they sit, It's just poorly explained in the demo.

I pre-ordered a MH4U New 3DS XL, so I'm thrilled to see this game getting positive reviews. I was a newcomer to the series with MH3U, but I stuck with it and "got" it. Even though I owned both the 3DS and Wii U versions of MH3U, I only put 30 hours into it, because I'm primarily a handheld player and the Circle Pad Pro was inconvenient... but I don't have to worry about that anymore! This time around, I'm hoping to play much more of MH4U.

Would it be worth going back and playing more of MH3U, since the features of the New 3DS XL are backwards-compatible with games that used the Circle Pad Pro?

Also, how viable is it to play MH4U primarily as a single-player experience? I didn't mind playing MH3U in single-player (I enjoyed playing online with friends, but when I hosted public games, I was getting grouped with random people who were overpowered for my hunts and one-shot everything), and the lack of voice chat in this game is a concern for me.

It's not clunky and slow, it's just more deliberate. You have to get good before it feels good. Once you do, it's great. It's like Dark Souls in that respect....(no I am not comparing these two games directly) However if you really don't like it, then you don't like it, and that's just fine. I don't want to use the word "Realistic", but the time it takes to swing weapons, and the fact that you can't just mash buttons and do superhuman amounts of attacks over time is what makes the game more appealing to me than say, Bayonetta or DmC.

This is literally just a case of learning to play. You need to learn which moves flow into each other. The game isn't clunky at all when you know what you're doing, because your aim is to plan your attacks so that they don't leave you standing there like an idiot. Even experienced players will feel that clunkiness when using a weapon they've never touched, they just stick with it because they know every weapon has combo links that flow smoothly. I encourage you to stick with it, and you'll get to the point where combat feels like a ballet with the monster.

Try all the weapons. Find one you like and then master it.

There is no easy street. Much like Dark Souls this game requires patience and commitment

Unlike Dark Souks this game is very team and social oriented.

You will learn and succeed MUCH faster with a group of friends. Watching Gaijin Hunters Youtube videos wouldnt hurt either

You're all right, I'm probably just approaching the game from the wrong direction. I was expecting a hack-and-slash when it's supposed to have a more Dark Souls-type feel. With Best Buy's $10 GC, it's worth a shot.

Try the long sword or the dual blades. They're a lot less weighty from what I remember when I tried them.

I'm in absolute disbelief at those reviews.

IGN and Gamespot giving monhon those scores is awesome but like what these are the kind of games that people who don't know what they're doing jump in and say "They're broken and full of bad game design" until like 10 hours later everything clicks.

This is amazing, hopefully this helps gives Monhun the sales boon it needs in the west for capcom to finally look at the western market for this series seriously.

Wow I was not expecting such good scores for MH4 .
It's usually the kind of game that a lot of people don't understand in the west .

The demo really is fantastic for trying out all the weapons and has no play limit. I'm 10 hours into the damn thing trying out all the weapons and am still having fun. I'd recommend giving that a try and using the faster weapons (Dual Blades, Sword and Shield) to get a hang of the combat, and then delve a little deeper into the slower ones if you're feeling it. Also, Gaijin Hunter's weapon writeups and youtube videos were super, super helpful for me when figuring out just what the hell you're actually supposed to be doing with the weapons and what combos / positioning are best.

Just a random question... is there anyone (like me) who would have preferred that the game came out for a non-handheld console instead? PS4 or Wii U?

I'd love a home console version, I always said that. Anyway, this is Monster Hunter, it's something special if you like it. 3DS only? Fine.

Back when I started on Monster Hunter, I settled into a rhythm with the lance, of a maximum-of-three-strikes-then-sidestep (which a quicker recovery into the next combo). I also use attack-attack-attack-jump back for the same effect. Once I mastered using both to keep the part I'm aiming for lined up with the lance tip, plus multiple sidesteps/jumpbacks between strikes for dodges, and switching between low/high attacks to keep striking even if the monster has lifted it's tail etc, I really started piling on the damage, particularly as multiple quick strikes are good to get a status effect like stun or poison to stick.

It's a weak weapon but having a mix of them among a hunting party is always useful- having a hammer user smashing horns while dodging frontal attacks while a lancer/ranged attacker keeps slowly but steadily piling on the damage elsewhere is a good way to make sure you bring the beast down, especially as lancers/ranged can keep hitting hovering creatures/those with longer legs.

I always tried to team up with a good hammer/greatsword hunter where possible. Each weapon has a combo system that needs practice and timing, the bigger weapons always feel slow to new players but later on they realise the players that master them are the ones breaking parts and getting the rarer drops for the team. It's no coincidence that once a player 'gets' monster hunter it can keep you occupied for hundreds of hours, and dozens even when playing alone.

Dual blades are a good way to get in I think. It was my first weapon that I truly started to "get". It's really a rewarding game once you get a hang of it....... If you get to that point, you'll be hooked forever.

I second the Gaijin Hunter recommendation. His video on the Great Sword really made me understand the philosophy behind the series' gameplay.

Despite its speed, I have found the Great Sword to be the perfect beginner's weapon. At least in the demo.

Game is a perfect 10 in my books.

I really hope people get a taste of what this game holds out. It is truly a new and exciting genre
The IP has been around for a decade.
that deserves more attention than anything released on current generation home consoles.
Nah, not when this exists.

Hell, I need to give that thing a try still! Can't wait for work to be over so I can load the demo back up. My play time on this thing is going to be embarrasing when I finally get the game, but it's nice (from what I understand) that the demo starts you not only with a decent version of the weapon but also with a set of armor that suits it. Much better than what I assume you have to do in the actual game of grinding out materials to build a weapon, plus some armor that suits it, and then discovering you kind of hate that weapon. NOTE: Assumptions made because this is my first Monster Hunter. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Yeah, you'll be gathering the materials yourself, but everyone will know, when you turn up wearing something cool and carrying a sword that looks like you ripped a dragon's spine out, that you earned every damn piece down to the boots :D

You'll build multiple armour sets too- in MH Tri I had a set specifically for fighting one type monster in a volcano, another for fighting it in normal conditions, another set for gathering, a set for high-attack if I kept running out of time in SP, and another super-defensive set for when fighting something new! That was specifically after running into a creature that one-shotted our entire party with a breath weapon. (

I would have preferred the 3U configuration (3DS/Wii U with a transfer tool) but if I could only have one version it would probably be 3DS. Hunting in the pub is cool.

With you felyne helpers it shouldn't be too bad. If you level them up right they can kick ass and be a decent distraction.

Bigger, better and more accessible than ever before - this will be the Monster Hunter to convert newcomers and keep the faithful happy, too.

If you're in any doubt, this is easily the best Monster Hunter so far, for veterans and newcomers alike. With it, I think Capcom has achieved exactly what the series has been aiming for since it started edging gently Westward: a perfect balance of Circus Maximus and just plain old circus. Get it. Stick with it. Buy yourself some thumb plasters.

Wow, western critics actually love Monster Hunter? That's very surprising.

Hopefully MH4G puts the genre in the spotlight in west and more games would get their well deserved attention. Like God Eater.

Yeah I'm getting it! (ended up giving up early on 4G due to being burned out on all that moon language, so I'm fresh enough and probably good for a couple hundred hours) Is there going to be a community thread?

Yes ! It's been a while Festwill, not sure if you remember me (Gegz) i'm ready for some action !

New 3DS also adds the cstick (which actually works great) and the ZL and ZR button which can also rotate the camera

Yup. I'm basically paying 200 bucks to play MH4 in the way its meant to be played. I really doubt that there will be that many more 3DS titles that take advantage of n3DS's feature. But that doesn't matter because MH4 is going to probably be my most played game of the year.

That maaayy change once you get in game. The demo GS is powerful and you have a lot of gear in the demo as well but honestly the GS really shines once you have the rhythm down for each fight.

Honestly though if you feel comfortable with the weapon then it's the "best" weapon for you. However I would highly recommend giving the hammer a shot. If you ask me the hammer is an awesome beginner weapon.

MH4 also has better texture on n3DS.... Much better textures.

So I've heard this game features an actual online element in the new 3DS. Does this mean I can meet random questers online through a lobby?
