Monster Hunter Wilds open beta impressions

What are you guys doing to improve your performance? I dont want any hits to visual fidelity. Just want to improve the fluidity. Playing on a 4090 13900k at 1440p. the 70-120fps aint cutting it
I have framerate unlocked and have no performance issues, I do get system hangs when it transitions from cinematics to being player controlled but I think that has to do with widescreen fiddling. 4k 240 hrz.

I am assuming by your message that you are getting huge perf swings?

Huge disagree. Maxed out visuals don't look good. I even posted screenshots above.
Eh while you mope about visuals I'm too busy blowing stuff up with Gunlance.

The game's Steam discussion section is nothing but people complaining about performance. Some of them with specs even weaker than a PS5. I don't know what they were expecting. Capcom was very upfront on how demanding the game is going to be.
I've come to the realization that the average PC gamer is very, very dumb these days.

Case in point:
Spent 2 hours with the game now (PC) doing the intro and roaming the wilds and I´m definitely done with that beta....

The game looks absolutely terrible. If this beta isn`t 90% placeholder assets with a backup lightingsystem and very bugged draw distance and texture loading (because everything looks so low res that this seriously can´t be intentional) then these are easily the worst visuals I´ve seen in a AAA open world game since ~mid PS4 era. And while looking like garbage it`s easily as demanding as CP2077 with high RT settings. If the release version isn`t a total 180 from this then this will be the first MH since the PSP that I´ll be holding off from purchasing day 1. This is far, far worse than DD2 was at release.

If you`ve only played retro pixelart games in the last 10 years....sure. This low poly texture mud is with "maxed out" settings.....

Put on your thinking cap. The beta is 23GB. Do you know how big Monster Hunter Worlds is on Steam?

Do I need to spell it out for you further? It means all the high quality textures and assets aren't in this beta. And obviously, optimization will also improve in the next 3 months (and beyond). Chill out.

Delusional bullshit.
There is only one area in the beta, barely any of the monsters and you don't release public betas with 90% placeholders to make your game look bad while asking for preorders, never happened never will. The presentations so far also looked just as bad as the beta but I guess that was also due to size restrictions despite running on dev machines, right?

So I’m a big MH noob, but I’m intrigued.

Is there a reason why you’d go solo against monsters at all?
Seems like being in a group makes the
fights much easier.

Do you get more rewards as a solo or something?

Is there a reason why you’d go solo against monsters at all?
A: Yes, u have 3 "carts" for hunt, if u play solo u can make 3 mistakes, if u play in group u have the same 3 mistakes, there is no way to know if the ppl that are entering the hunt ll help or not, what i do is play at least some hunts solo to learn monster move set before joining someone SOS.

Seems like being in a group makes the fights much easier.
A: Yes and No, depends on the group, like i said above, "carting" is one problem in MP, the second one is that difficult increases with the number of players.
For example Fatalis ( MHW final boss ) has 66k life when solo, 114k when duo or trio and 168K full party.

Do you get more rewards as a solo or something?
A: Yes and No, everything depend on how quick u can finish fights and if the random that enters ur hunt aren't potato's playing, sometimes i prefer to hunt solo since i know monster move set and ll farm him faster.

Usually MH MP is fair and ppl know what theiy are doing, but once the game get to the end game and monster start one shot ppl, it can became a little frustrating sometime.

Ok, put another couple of hours into it. I am a Capcom fanboy but this is just too cumbersome for me. It's like a boss rush game with too many annoyances. Blade goes dull mid combat, let me run away and sharpen it , blade keeps bouncing off still, oh I have to charge something as I am a sitting duck, I opened a wound then have to hold the aim button to see where it is, monster keeps running off, let me get on my autorunning mount for it to automatically follow a trail. Oh, it ran near 2 other huge monsters, let me switch to some ass bomb to disperse everyone, including the boss I am hunting, etc.,

I can definitely see the appeal for people with the patience. I seem to be in the minority when it comes to the games appeal. It's like city builders or other sims. Too much busy work for me but others love that shit. Just giving my impressions in an impressions thread so don't shoot me. It does have hunter in the name so as long as people know what they are getting into, it's cool. Animations and graphics are amazing to me. Got everything maxed at 1440p and 100 fps so it's not the performance I have an issue with.

Am I bring blind or is there no way to remap controls on a controller?

I definitely couldn't figure it out. Another one of my issues.

with how UNSPEAKABLY ugly the Series X version was, I installed it on PC real quick.

here are the results:
with the high preset I get slightly worse performance or slightly better performance (depending on the scene) than Series X in performance mode, which hangs ~50fps at best, and ~35 fps lowest.
with slightly adjusted settings I get between 5 and 10 fps more than that.

the screenshots in the Spoiler Tags below were taken with an RTX 3060 Ti, FPS counter in the top left.
all PC screenshots were taken at 1440p output, using DLSS Balanced mode (835p internal resolution).
the Xbox screenshots were downscaled by me to 1440p from 2160p, so that comparing them is easier (with how low the internal resolution is... you're not missing much information there anyway)

Xbox Series X Performance Mode (~50fps in these scenes going by the VRR counter of my TV)
ehvel3t8.png

tupqukkv.png

the difference in brightness is of course down to different settings between Xbox and PC, and because I have HDR on on Xbox but off on PC.
the difference between brightness in the PC shots are down to the different global illumination settings between High and Medium.

I feel like however, that it is pretty obvious that a 3060ti can offer a significantly better image, while running at higher settings, than a Series X.

it seems to me that the Series X uses VRS. from testing it on PC, VRS actually made my performance worse by around 2 to 3 FPS in the same scene.

Why are they still doing this character LOD thing where your char looks ace in story sequences but shitty in gameplay? Why? Give me the option to have the better model here pretty please!

Finally got around to playing some beta. Maybe it's just getting used to a new character and game, but I'm pretty disoriented by all the strange options choices. The seikret is maddening and it seems like there are more context sensitive controls than ever before. With that said, I am really digging the "open world" design and how you can just free roam the map - this is exactly how expeditions should have been handled in World, with the ability to complete quests as you do so without getting pulled back to base camp between each hunt.

So far hunted Chatacabra and Alpha Doshugama, both playing greatsword which feels... off. TCS doesn't seem to hit hard, and I am having some trouble understanding what charge levels are available to me - seems like sometimes I can't go to charge level 3 on certain moves. I am going to do some more hunting and switch it up with longsword and maybe sword and shield.

This beta is going to chase away newcomers, like always. Quite overwhelming and more confusing than ever. For anyone this applies to, don't judge the final game by this and if you are interested in the game/series, don't give up. The first 10 hours is an absolutely awful experience but if you stick with it, MH is one of the best games out there. Tag along with someone that can show you the ropes and/or watch a tutorial video that gives you the basic structure of how to play start small. Practice getting one thing down at a time and start adding gameplay elements one at a time.

Gunlance without the rocket boost is a downer, no switch skills in general. The bird mount doesn't control as well as the dogs. I could do without the story, I prefer when it's a few grunts and you're off to hunt.
I'm going to play more tomorrow, and mess with my favorite weapons.

I guarantee I've played more the beta than you so far. I'm enjoying the game, but I'm not blind to its faults.
I prefer Rise overall. Wilds issues run deeper then it's performance. I only play on High settings and it looks fine to me. And I don't use frame generation at all and I have motion blur turned off.

I feel more in control in Rise. Wilds feels slow and clunky to me.

Damn

I feel like I shouldn’t even try out the beta, sounds overwhelming as fuck

I managed to enjoy the demo for what it was, but fuck buying the full game until they allow remapping. Not having dodge on circle should be a crime.
I questioned it too but I gather this has been the MH control layout since the dawn of time. The MH franchise predates any Souls title so they have the right to have Dodge on X, because that was before Souls games invented Dodge on O

Also the game seems to have a lot of button inputs where you have to push △ + O at the same time and that would be kind of difficult if you remapped Dodge to O

I tried practicing with the Longsword but I just wasn't feeling it so I switched to the Hammer and that just felt fun and bonking shit until it falls over is great so I think I'll practice using the Hammer for awhile

If I could remap the controls then I'd also put the attacks on r1 and r2 instead of circle and triangle, so that would solve that problem.

It's really strange, because you can fully remap everything if you're playing on keyboard, but they are shafting controller users on PC.

No need for remap, it's a learn to hunt issue :lollipop_horns:

Losing blast dash is painful but it's too anime for Wilds.

If you have little to no experience with MH, it's not a good starting point. It's truly a beta and seems like the primary objective is testing online multiplayer and weapon balance. There may be a true demo released early next year that would be a better representation of the final product.

I'm a noob when it comes to the Monster Hunter games. I figured I'd give this one a shot. While I do like the story line so far, the sheer amount of control/commands, weapon ammunition types, dodge, lock on,
weak areas, power up moves, etc is just too damn much for me. I find myself struggling with controlling my character and it takes me right out of the immersion. Instead of feeling like a bad ass while becoming "one with your weapon", I feel like a klutz constantly missing shots, getting knocked down and then getting killed. I was correct in my thinking that these games just aren't cut out for me just like the "souls like" genre. Guess I'll stick to the Duke Nukems and Dooms.

Put in like 300 hours on mh world on PS4.

Tried this on Ps5 and MY GOD. Terrible graphics. I can't fuckint take it man.

I'm good with 30fps. But what the shit was that? Is it 30? Feels like it jumps around 20-25. And it doesn't even look that good....

I then tried 60, and the resolution drop was just too much.

I think I'm out. I'm not even joking. That opening segment was so damn distracting. It can't even get a regular 30fps mode for fuck sakes?

OK! I thought I was being a brat. This really bugged me out. When I couldn't remap the controls I turned it off and said. Nah. Not worth it. Not about to retrain my fingers for a beta. Presentation so far is nice. But that control scheme especially with the new aiming system. Beta is a no for me.

Hey. As someone who has played them for years. But felt the same way. Don't be discouraged. It is a game where you literally start small and then add on elements as you go.

I now have friends playing who literally only played games like overcooked. But they played the game slowly and at their pace and now we are doing hunts together in world years later.

With that being said. As a monster hunter lover. Even I turned off the beta and said I'll wait for a real demo because this wasn't it. Still getting it day one because Worlds and Rise were amazing. But this beta is a no for me. Personally.

I'm a noob too but I quickly learned that whiffing your best attacks is part of the true MH experience same as dodgy hit boxes and delayed monster attack animations that home in on you and blow you up for your entire life bar out of nowhere lol

This beta is not a good representation of the journey that gets you to understand what you're doing, it's pretty much geared to people who are veteran to the series, or at least finished the story in world.

Don't be discouraged, I recommend trying again with the bow or the hammer, since those two weapons focus on just dodging/attacking.

Before you know it you'll be doing all the main character anime shit with the long sword.

I have to say, this trend with every attack having variable delays is super lazy. The souls games started this and MH is following suit. We are seeing this even in low rank now.

These aren't the same kind of attacks. The delayed attacks from monsters is how MH has always worked. And are to allow the player to time and place their next attack or setup.

The delayed attacks from Souls games (first largely seen in Dark Souls 3 and now rampant in SotE) are just lazy attack methods to catch the player rolling.

Once you play more MH is primarily reacting to what the Monster does with attacks in your core moveset or using traps or tools to either damage or manipulate the Monster. Ironically MH at times is like a fighting game and once you memorize what Monsters do you already know how to react to it through muscle memory.

Did they say how the beta bonus would work? I don't really want to transfer my character over.
I don't think they have. I don't remember how it worked on MH World in terms of if the rewards were attached to your character or not.

If they let you change your character at any time then I don't see the problem.

It's more like I want to see everything from the beginning once the full game releases. It's ok now though, since I see we can delete our hunter and start from scratch. And if I force quit during the opening cutscene the next time I start the game lets me go to character select where I can edit and save changes without progressing the story at all. Also I think I read earlier in the thread that some people were asking if they can the opening, well, that's how.
