At Monday's event, Microsoft also announced plans to make all games from its previous console compatible with the upcoming Xbox 360. However, few details were given regarding how, or when, updated support for Xbox titles would be achieved. Microsoft representatives did say they would start with more popular titles such as "Halo," then move down the line.

Pricing for the Xbox 360 will not be announced until after E3, which ends May 20.

Gamers who have purchased a library of games for the Xbox have been concerned about not being able to play those titles on the new console, but Microsoft representatives have said they didn't expect those worries to slow sales of the gadget.

"Backward-compatibility is not the reason people buy a new system," said David Hufford, Microsoft Xbox group product manager. "The perception is that it is significant. We've put all our energy into new titles, but since our consumers have asked for it...we've made it a goal to make all titles backward-compatible."

Am I the only one confused? On one hand we hear only the "top-selling" games will be BC and then this.

If it's a gradual implementation, then they should have said it. Otherwise it'll be another bleem whereby they give up after the first 5 or so.

Sounds like they just don't want to overpromise. But, to be blunt the only PSone game I ever played on my PStwo was Jumping Flash.

Jumping Flash 4 evah, yo.

they're just making a policy of making sure a game works properly, from beginning to end.

you can't just flick a switch and all games can be played, some games were coded to the metal therefore they have to go through all the games and create workarounds for those games.

It's not a big deal really... so maybe after a year or two all games will be supported...

All i can think of is Bleem...they wanted to have it emulate all PSX game but ended up just doing one title at a time for DC....i think they are just covering thier bases...making sure they can deliver AAA titles but the goal has always been all XBOX games.

DCX

It sounds like to me that XBOX compatibility is definitly software based. So this just means that they will be testing games starting with the most popular first.

Thing with Bleem (and Bleemcast) though was that they had done the emulation without having access to any documentation and with Sony breathing down their neck.

I'm sure MS would be able to do a decent job. And there's always the possiblity of it being updated via Xbox Live silver.
