Most Overrated/Underrated 32-bit game

The End

Member
Overrated: Ocarina of time.

A 3-d extension of the Zelda franchise, but nothing more.

Underrated: Metal Gear Solid

The father of modern videogames.

Overrated: FF VII

Awesome RPG...but well, like if the SNES ones had never existed...

Underrated:Banjo Kazooie

I think this game's formula has been so copied so many times that it isn't even funny.

overrated: well, there are dozens of excellent candidates. but i'm going to say panzer dragoon saga. lovely visuals and music. has the decency not to stick around for 50 hours. otherwise dull, and certainly nowhere near as good as the shooters.

underrated: galactic attack/layer section. one of the greatest 2d shooters ever. virtuoso pixel art and level design. and it's domestically available. for peanuts. just buy this instead of selling your soul for radiant silvergun.

Hell yeah, awesome game. I wish the Saturn version included all of the parallax backdrops from the arcade release, though. Then again, there is much less slowdown on Saturn, so it all evens out...

Banjo Kazooie is the father of the modern 3D platfforming game. Sure Mario 64 appeared before but I still consider it pretty singular and unique (let's say unrivalled).

Jack & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, even Sly Racoon owe a lot to Banjo.

I think it is one of the latest good games from Rare, along Goldeneye, DKR and Conker. (not talking about disgraces like Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie or their 128 bit efforts).

TATE! it's only missing effects in the horizontal screen mode.

No shit? I'll have to check that out. Still have the original copy (case and all). Those Saturn cases a bitch to store, though...

You deserve to die.

Layer Section?

Isn't that just Rayforce?

Yeah, that was amazing. Also, ZanacXZanac

I think Dynamite Headdy is seriously underrated. It's one of my favourite platformers ever. The central mechanic/gimmick is still brilliant and something that's probably only possible in 2D (which is a good thing, since 3D platformers tend to...suck). And the bosses are all fantastic. And it even has a great shooter level.

Overrated...I've always thought Mario 64 has been "excessively praised". It's not bad at all but 3D platforming has, as a genre, some inherent flaws, and it was too early and primitive to deal with most of them. I thought Sunshine was a much more refined version of the same formula (and it had the wonderful old-school levels).

edit: yeah DH isn't 32-bit, oh well

I'll go by platform, keeping it to domestic releases too... and all this is in regards to GAF rather than the *real* world...

Most Overrated
PS1~R4: Ridge Racer Type 04 (the worst Ridger Racer ever! Rage Racer eats it alive)
N64~Conker's Bad Fur Day (okay game, nice looking but pretty empty in terms of engaging mechanics... I think people were just blindsided by Rare not making a collectathon)
Sat~Dark Savior (what a pile of shit, thank god for Matrix/Alundra)

Most Underrated
PS1~Grandia (unfairly criticized for not being on par with the SS original visually, it's still the best RPG last gen)
N64~The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (literally better than OoT in every way, as close to prefect as games come)
Sat~Daytona USA (still the best playing home release, even if she's not too pretty)

edit-Ack! Too much caffine!

N64~Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (broken Super Metroid-lite seems to have runied this franchise, how I long for something comparable to Castlevania III)
Sat~Dark Savior (what a pile of shit)

The truth

Most underrated lists are odd since they mostly have games that we are all well aware of and praise heavily.

But my pick? Destrega for the PSone. The only non Dynasty Warrirors game, cept for Winback, which was also pretty decent.

WTH is this thread doing starting off with MGS as underrated in the original post?

I'll try to control myself and limit it to games most people have played...

Overrated: Final Fantasy 7 by far. But many others come to mind.
Underrated: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. FFT what?

Underated:
Steep Slope Sliders - Saturn
Tobal 2 - PSX
Daytona - Saturn

Overated:
Most Square games
Goldeneye - N64
