Manipulating the T-Bar
I have no idea why I gave Bruce Nauman another shot.

おおかみこどもの雨と雪 [The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki]
Cuteness overload.

Paisà [Paisan]
Not as good as the other parts of the trilogy.

Date Night
I only needed a few minutes of this on TV to convince me I'll never actually finish it.

Szürkulet [Twilight] (rewatch)
Movie night. Turns out my friends don't appreciate slow-moving Hungarian films as well as I do.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
The other Twilight Saga film I watched was just bad but this is actually entertainingly bad.

人狼 [Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade] (rewatch)
I think the wolf imagery is a bit too understated. Maybe turn that up a bit? Maybe transpose an image of a wolf onto the main character's face?

Touch of Evil
I have to say the first half didn't quite grab me (no, not even the opening shot), but the ending is something else entirely.

M
Still just as relevant today.

The Medallion
See Date Night.

Hot Fuzz
Some funny ideas but oh my fucking god is the editing annoying.

Ah, Marilyn Burns died. She may have been known mainly for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I think in recent years she had finally realized why that was pretty awesome.

Farewell, scream queen.

I watched Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal. I loved it. Very haunting. Man, Jake is such a great actor - he's easily one of my favorites out there today.

RIP. I just caught a screening of the new print. It is a true classic and she was painfully hot.

Somm

Interesting documentary about a group of guys who strive to become Master Sommelier's.

Not too much substance, that is not very informative about wine, but found it interesting nonetheless.

Casino Royale - Still the best Bond movie. The ending is so hype, it makes me want to see the sequel right away...then I remember the sequel is Quantum of Solace and I get sad at the wasted potential.

Losin' It - Tom Cruise's first starring role, and holy shit its bad. Its one of those teen sex comedies that were hot at the time, and its just...oh man. Worth a watch only as a novelty, and even then my nigga you better prepare yourself for a painfully unfunny comedy. Cruise is lucky Risky Business came out the same year and this didn't derail his career from the get-go.

How did they make such a long action movie, with such a great pacing? I remember snobbing that movie at first, because i was snobbish about Bond in general, but i had to eat massive crow on that one.
Got the bluray for free with the ps3, too.

Thanks Sony.

Saw some of The Protector 2, and jesus, it looks like shit. it was shot in 3D and it's so jarring.

Also saw Cuban Fury, the new Nick Frost vehicle. It's really average, with a few good moments, but it's got a charm and likability that keeps it from being purely mediocre

I need to watch something actually good. I rented Enemy, hopefully it doesn't let down

Mr. Nobody

Visually stunning, amazing soundtrack, really great acting by Jared Leto. The non-linear narrative confused the hell out of me at various points and I don't think I'll want to rewatch it for a while because it is a relatively unique experience in its own right.

Its amazing that this comes right after Die Another Day with the same writers, cuz they feel like completely different worlds. Everything in CR is so classy, all the performances, the editing, the cinematography, David Arnold's score, just a stupidly well-crafted piece of popcorn cinema. Longest Bond movie ever at 144 minutes, but it somehow never sacrifices thrills in its quest of being more character based, and rarely sags or feels bloated throughout its entire runtime('cept maybe that frankly ridiculous last set piece in the sinking house, well-staged and graceful Vesper ending as it is). There are two big shifts where the story structure should have just committed suicide, one where it goes from fleet spy action movie to Le Chiffre poker game low-key thriller, and then again when its revealed the movie is actually a tragic love story. But it handed so naturally and skillfully, you hardly even notice it.

Having the best Bond girl since OHMSS helps. Smart, sexy, resourceful, even saves Bond life at one point, yet still human, vulnerable as you see her shell-shocked reaction to the violence sitting in the shower. Sees through all of Bond's super-macho misogynistic bullshit("Take the next elevator; there's not enough room for me and your ego"), but still ok with finding herself sexually attracted to him("Even accountants have imaginations").

And when the action does show up, its about as good as Bond has ever had. Some really impressive stuff here, the scale and choreography of the opening chase, or the escalating drama of the airport bomb chase, or how intense and claustrophobic the stairs fist/swordfight is while never once becoming disorienting or confusing the geography. There's even a Guinness World Record for most car flips in a single take! And Daniel Craig, not just perfect for all the smaller-scale spying and character drama, but he's so damn believable in all the action sequences in a way I don't think any of the other Bond actors have ever been, even the definitive Connery or the roguish Dalton.

It's really good!

UrbanRats, I love your avatar. I asked you before what was the source for your older avatar (the b&w one with the girl looking up), but you never replied.

Sorry man, must've not seen that post.

It was the cover of a Set Fire to Flames album: "Telegraphs in Negative/Mouths Trapped in Static" which, is a Michael Ackerman photo i remember being of Isabelle Adjani, but i can't actually find a source for that, so i don't know how that notion got into my brain.

Kick-Ass 2.

At certain points, I felt that it went way over the line to get a laugh but it just turned out more awkward than anything else. Other than those particular moments, it wasn't bad. I liked the first one more.

Captain American: The Winter Solider

Watched the first time. I enjoyed it I guess, but it was predictable fluff like almost all the super hero / comic movies that seem to come out now. I guess that just aren't really my thing anymore.

A problem I have now the avengers and whatever has started is, Captain has to deal with a worldwide problem so why isn't Iron Man, Hulk and co involved to help? It's like this no matter who the hero is I just wonder about where the rest of them are.

Movie (Rank)

Oblivion (D-)
Oculus (B+?) - I thought this was pretty gross, and
I found the mom's torture with the kids in the house to be pretty fucked up.
Harlock: Space Pirate (F) - Am I missing something here?
After the Dark (D) - I wanted the kids to actually be in this situation, not doing it through an elaborate thought experiment. Also, this is the worst philosophy class I've ever witnessed (and I did my masters in philosophy).

because they had the brilliant idea of putting Campbell again at the helm, a guy who knows damn well how to build an action movie. Goldeneye may be cheesy by today's standards, but every action scene in tha movie is still impressive from a technical standpoint

Guardians of the Galaxy: Very good movie. Fun, with good action and Racoon. Will rewatch it once it hits iTunes.
Jack Reacher: Cheesy but entertaining. Pretty much like the books. Cruise is very good. Some parts looked very cheap. Bar dialogue is the best.
Inglourious Basterds: Didn't really like this one. Wonderfully acted, but almost no Tarantino dialogue. Might be my least favourite Tarrantino movie i saw.
Batman Begins: Very fucking good. Entertaning, without obvious CGI and without dragging parts.
Ghostbusters: I'm sorry, but it was meh. Murray is ok, but movie itself didn't do much for me.

This is a really bizarre critique to me. It's been a while since I last saw IB, but I remember it being one of the most dialogue heavy movies of his. There is scene where they sit down for like 30+ minutes just talking.

So, Hercules is legit. Fun, action-packed, has cool ideas (like Hercules becoming a legend because he rolled with a badass crew) and The Rock, well, rocks.

Watched some dumb shit:

Rise of the Planet of the Monkeys: 7/10. I watched this cause I heard the second one was all right, and this was kind of all right too.

Will: Hi. Where do you live? San Fransisco?
Caesar: Africa.
Will: How long will you be in San Fransisco? Can I see you?

Then I decided to catch up on all the Marvel stuff I never bothered to watch since OT has been converted in to a Marvel discussion board.

Hulk: 5/10.
Iron Man 2: 6/10.
Iron Man 3: 6/10.
Thor: The Dark World: 5/10.

I might have had individual thoughts on each but they've all kind of blended to together. I think I like the Iron Mens the best since they're kind of funnier.

MCU Colis:

Iron Man
Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America: First Avenger
The Avengers
Iron Man 3
Thor: Dark World
Captain America: Winter Soldier

Haven't seen Guardians yet but I've got a pretty good idea how good it's going to be.

On a similar note...

I haven't seen a superhero movie since I saw The Dark Knight in cinemas in 2008 so decided to do a bit of catching up as my holidays were coming to an end and I wanted to kill time for no reason.

Started with The Dark Knight Rises which was better than I was led to believe by GAF. Though still the weakest in the trilogy as problems which arose in TDK's boat scenario are present through out the entire film I feel.

Then moved on to The Avengers, being the most talked about film on GAF. Character interactions were fun but Loki (and the aliens) didn't seem like great villains to me. Hard to get involved in any of the story as it all felt a bit too frivolous which brings me to...

Iron Man 3. Some fun sequences with the new suit and Ben Kingsley was just great but the wasn't a fan of the ending.

Put off Iron Man 2 for later as I heard it was terrible but decided to watch it after enjoying 3. Well it has some redeemable qualities I guess.

Captain America:The First Avenger was much better than I expected....at least the first half. Red Skull abandoning his base so easily when Cap tries to rescue the soldiers seemed odd to me but I thought it's kinda understandable to establish the Cap's cred. Turns out though that Hydra is complete push over and total non-threat for the most part. Really liked the origin story though.

Captain America:Winter Soldier was really well done except the last set piece and some terrible lines for Anthony Mackie. Best Marvel film I've seen yet.

Thor was perhaps the worst of all the Marvel films I've seen. The concept sounds good, an origin story for a superhero god which almost appears as if it's retelling of an old fable but there were just too many non-characters. Portman deserves better. Loki (Hiddleston) was great here though.

Thor:The Dark World was better than the first.

Still need to see The Incredible Hulk and give Iron Man (2008) a rewatch.

LTTP to see Lego Movie. The creativity in that movie was through the roof and practically every frame is an awesome screenshot. I wish I was that creative.

I rewatched Goldeneye last year for the first time in forever and thought it held up pretty well, actually.

there's something that puts me off about it. Not sure what, exactly, but it must be the cinematography. Too soft and TV like, for me; it makes everything look a bit too fake. And the fact James is a weird hybrid about badass modern Bond and gadget-ridden campy Bond is kinda hard to digest. Still, the action is stellar

I think the only bit I didn't really care for was that red sports car at the beginning. Looks super dated now.

Goldeneye has the best bad guy. And one of the best henchmen in Xenia. And honestly, one of the best Bond girls. Not Vesper Lynd good, but she has her own agency/world, her 90s computer hacking intelligence is integral to saving the day, and actually tackle the big villain lair as a team. Plus, ya know, she's really fuckin' hot, but that's just part of the package. The Best Bond movies tend to be the ones where the Bond Girls aren't totally disposable and realize Bond is kind a misogynist dinosaur.

Also she's a dumb bag of rocks in the N64 video game holy shit Natalya why would you run in front of a firefight FUCK

Thor:The Dark World was better than the first.

I'm surprised at this. I loved Thor, maybe because it has a sort of self distance I can't quite put my finger on. It just works perfectly for me, probably my favorite marvel movie.
The sequel was boring and felt very cookie cutter. The change of director is very apparent.

The Breakfast Club - I've been on an 80's high school movie kick and this was another great one. I had seen bits and pieces but never all the way through. I love how it doesn't show you the aftermath.

Guardians of the Galaxy

I think I found Thor: Dark World more entertaining. Neutered James Gunn is really fucking boring, though maybe I am remembering his other films a bit too fondly.
