4- Barry Lyndon
5- Modern Times
6- In the Mood for Love

10- La Jetée

Honorable mentions:

Chungking Express
Ordet
The Night of the Hunter

I've seen 321 movies so far this year.

Crazed Fruit could have been crazier, kind of loses energy in the last act of three. The ending is surprisingly nihilistic and expressionist, what with Haruji turning out to be the more brutally apathetic brother. How could any discerning Japanese youth look at these individuals and deem them role models? Their behavior and bullshit privileged mythology makes James Dean look cultured. My problem with the movie is that it's almost as self-indulgent as the Ishiharas in this, lingering on overly passive scenes too long and inserting more than enough footage of boating and water-skiing. I understand there wasn't much time between the shooting of this and Shintaro Ishihara's success with Season of the Sun, but this is still a bit unsubstantial.

The critics I read all like Margaret, especially the director's cut. Lonergan's a name known to me.

Dunno if I'll have the fortitude to do a list like this myself but I like yours. I mean, except for the fact that The Night of the Hunter isn't #1 overall, which is where it should be under filmgaf peer pressure rating standards.

LB has me at 260 films logged, subtracting shorts and rewatches looks like about 210-215 at the moment. Which I like as a pace actually, last year when I tried to get 366 films in (and failed) watching was exhausting sometimes. but I'll do around 225 at least on this year, which is a fairly decent number I think, without even feeling like I made any big effort. almost like one year of overdoing it made me able to do a respectable pace for the foreseeable future.

Thanks to a chance encounter at CD Warehouse yesterday, I do believe I'm going to have myself a marathon throughout January to inaugurate 2014 in grand fashion, as well as being a part of other things I'm going to finally get around to doing to celebrate turning 30.

I went and saw Gravity and I found it to be a little overrated. It looks amazing and I love space movies, but I'm not sure why this one has received so much praise. Clooney does a good Space Cowboy routine even if it's a little annoying, and Bullock does her role well, but overall it just felt like such an empty movie that tried way too hard to be substantial. There were two scenes that were especially obvious and cheesy:
When Bullock enters the Soyuz after running out of oxygen and she floats in a fetal position in a circular room with cords positioned to look like umbilical cords, and when she reaches Earth, struggles to get out of the water, and finally walks upright.
These scenes just made me cringe.

And what was up with the plot? The Russians shoot down their own satellites and never consider the implications of the debris? Why would they even do this? And are these space stations all really so close together? I think they were talking about things being within 100km of each other. Everything is just so questionable throughout the movie.

You watched some terrific movies this year, but you weren't fucking around with the bad ones either haha.

30? You planning that retirement home move now or later?

this...

Anyways, watched that new Hobbit movie: Soap Opera edition. It was alright but the fucking filler kills the flow of the movie. HFR is fucking horrible for anything not made by a computer.

to the wonder

It's a ballet dude. So yeah gif is right.

I really loved it though.

That's still quite a bit of movies you've seen. I tried to get to 365, but like you said, I don't want it to be exhausting.

Beaches, Mean Girls 2 and Sex and the City were particularly painful. They were such a chore.

Subtracting shorts, I'm at about 274 features watched this year. 6 movies a day and I'm well on my way to rectifying that. Not saying I've committed yet, my old man still wants to marathon Moonlighting...

Broadcast News

Maybe it's just me, but this film has a weird feel to it. Between the pacing, the dialogue, and how the characters act something is off. The scene where
Jane tells Aaron she has feelings for Tom
is a prime example. I'll give the movie props for having Jane
not end up with either of them, since they both treat her in a way that is creepy at times. However, it doesn't quite articulate why she is better off without them.

This movie is really starting to grow on me. Also love how he uses his "normal" voice as Batman.

And the ending with the card still gets the hair on my arms to stand up.

I'll look into it

I liked this but thought it lost all of it's tension about 20 minutes in.

Also I know what they were trying to do with the ending but thought that it was stupid.

Yeah I know some things just didn't work well, including the ending.. Love Jakes beard though, best beard of 2013

LotR: Return of the King was on TV yesterday. Man... that movie does not hold up. It looks bad and there's so much hammy acting going on.

Yeah, this film was a big letdown from the previous one. It really should have been two movies.

Cool idea. Here's mine:

1. Army Of Shadows
2. Two-lane Blacktop
3. Straw Dogs (1971)
4. Three Colours: Red
5. Stalker
6. After Hours
7. The King of Comedy
8. Before Sunrise
9. Sorcerer
10. Love Exposure

Honorable mentions

The Long Goodbye
Vanishing Point
Peeping Tom
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
Three Colours: Blue
Before Sunset
Lancelot of the Lake
Scorpio Rising
L' Argent

I enjoyed them all, but only really look back on the first one fondly at this point. The third one had some good moments, but you're right about it having a lot of hammy bullshit.

My 'top 10 non 2013 movies we've seen for the first time list'

Just looked at the films I rated 9 or higher

10 - Umberto D.
09 - Sherlock Jr.
08 - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
07 - The Devils
06 - Bullitt
05 - Ballad of Narayama
04 - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
03 - A Woman Under the Influence
02 - Ikiru
01 - La passion de Jeanne d'Arc

The order doesn't really matter. I'm probably forgetting things. My list of honorable mentions would be too long.

Including shorts and TV shows (per season) I've seen
490
movies this year.

mahhh niggga
I was depressed for a week after watching Ikiru for the first time, Kurosawa knows exactly how to give me maximum feelios

Umberto D is another great film; definitely my favorite De Sica after Bicycle thieves

gf and I just watched the Kdrama - My wife got married
jesus christ that guy was so fucking beta it made me want to vomit

2/10

My non-2013 movies list isn't terribly exciting, but here's my top 12 just in alphabetical order:

The Bad Sleep Well
The Big Gundown
Burden of Dreams
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Casablanca
Cool Hand Luke
The Great Silence
Harakiri
Hoop Dreams
Play It Again, Sam
The Sting
The Wild Bunch

LotR: Return of the King was on TV yesterday. Man... that movie does not hold up. It looks bad and there's so much hammy acting going on.

PJ is pretty bad with letting people ham it up. There is a character in the new hobbit movie that feels like he should have been in a Tim Burton movie.

Question about Hulu Plus- are there different movies available in other regions as with Netflix? Like any Criterion movies available in other countries that aren't available in the US? From what I'm finding it doesn't look like it but I just thought I'd ask.

About to watch something Criterion on Hulu now, I'm thinking Picnic and Hanging Rock...

This is pretty amazing.

What a crazy wave of death the industry's just had. O'Toole, Eleanor Parker (Paul Walker!), Audrey Totter!

Oh: Before the Rain has an annoyingly obtuse narrative structure that chops up a good story into two lame ones and the original now circumscribed. Great subject, but I feel like the Peckinpah/Leone stylings do nothing to help it, probably making things worse and more sensational than necessary. Macedonians vs. Albanians, now that's a set-up.

Hook
I got very emotional for some reason. Very beautiful story about lost love and youth.
My friend has a little 2 year old son who loves the Nick Jr show "Jake and the pirates" and I cant wait for him to be older so he can watch this one and get his mind blown :D

Best pre-2013 I saw this year

1. Suspiria (1977) (Dario Argento)
In a Lonely Place (1950) (Nicholas Ray)
The Night of the Hunter (1955) (Charles Laughton)
The Return of the Living Dead (1985) (Dan O'Bannon)
Risky Business (1983) (Paul Brickman)
Kiss Me Deadly (1955) (Robert Aldrich)
Deep Red (1975) (Dario Argento)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) (Shane Black)
Ace in the Hole (1951) (Billy Wilder)
After Hours (1985) (Martin Scorsese)

Suspiria was an instant classic, but after that I didn't put too much thought into order. They're all pretty great, and the 50s killed for me this year. So much I left off because I just can't remember everything.

I should've seen way more in 2013 than I did, though. The summer was NOT kind to my backlog.

I'm confused, why do a top 10 non-2013 in this thread? wut

We always have the regular best movies of a certain year thread, so this list is to see cool stuff people here saw for the first time that wasn't released within the year. We did it in the movies you've seen thread last year. It sounds confusing and I'm not the best wording it lol.

My pre-2013 watched in 2013 list:

1. Wages of fear
2. If....
3. F for fake
4. Fitzcarraldo
5. The thin blue line
6. The wicker man
7. The tenant
8. Bad lieutenant
9. My dinner with andre
10. Roman Holiday

It's been a pretty great movie year for me!

Here's my list. I cheated and used Before Sunrise and Before Sunset as one. It also made me feel ashamed to go back and see that I haven't watched a lot of films this year.

1. Before Sunrise / Before Sunset
2. Summer Interlude
3. In the Mood for Love
4. Punch-Drunk Love
5. American Beauty
6. Taxi Driver
7. Solaris
8. La Notte
9. Rebecca
10. The Long Goodbye

Best movie films I've watched this year:

1. The Master (2012)
2. Before Midnight (2013)
3. 3 Women (1977)
4. Gravity (2013)
5. Naked (1993)
6. Midnight Cowboy (1969)
7. Detropia (2012)
8. Killing Them Softly (2012)
9. Chinatown (1974)
10. My Dinner With Andre (1981)

Eventually, I assume we'll do a GAF Best Movies of 2013, and then the inevitable complaining about the results when Man of Steel is the top ten

About Schmidt - Beautiful, I love stories about old men so much, something about the post retirement phase resonates with me for some reason. Alexander Payne is one of the best contemporary directors when it comes to comedy dramas, Nicholson of course kills it, and there's some gorgeous Midwest scenery. Far, far superior to The Descendants, I need to see Nebraska asap.
