Well, if you do, maybe wait to February. There's a few movies I want to see that don't come out til Jan, like Her going nationwide, and a few other movies I couldn't see come on Blu-Ray like Short Term 12, Blue Jasmine, etc. I'm not gonna be able to see Inside Llewyn Davis it seems, but oh well.

Looking at that list, who else thinks Moonrise Kingdom is Wes Anderson's worst movie? Something about it doesn't click with me as much. Still not an awful movie by any means.

Django destroyed everything.

1. Django Unchained 799
2. Moonrise Kingdom 436
3. Skyfall 424
4. The Dark Knight Rises 406
5. The Avengers 393
6. Looper 321
7. The Master 299
8. Silver Linings Playbook 295
9. Zero Dark Thirty 288
10. Dredd 275

Wow Dredd made it to the top 10. Well deserve. Did not see much movies came out this year tbh, I mostly watched films from the 90s or from the recent years. Maybe I'll drag my ass to the theater and watch the Hobbit tomorrow.

Let see, movies from 2013 that I have seen:

Man of Steel
The Wolverine
Pacific Rim
Gravity
Oblivion

...huh. This is worse than I thought. I've just checked my nearby theater and they are playing Catching Fire, Hobbit, and Frozen. Well, I haven't gone outside for a while, so I guess I will go for a marathon.

:(

I still haven't seen The Master either. Or Amour. I'm sure there's others from 2012 as well.

Dredd is so bad, I don't get it.

It's definitely near the bottom for me. Enjoyed Norton's and maybe Willis' performances, but the movie didn't really leave any impact. Grand Budapest Hotel looks fantastic though.

Dredd is really good. But I think it peters out 2/3rds into the movie. The big gatling gun set piece feels really redundant after ten seconds. Dredd stays a step ahead for two minutes; everyone else dies. And then, the the fake Dredd's were just alright. We got a good payoff in the end, though.

Top 10 in 2013 for first time:

1. Floating Clouds
2. Early Summer
3. Last Year at Marienbad
4. A Moment of Innocence
5. Au hasard Balthazar
6. The Searchers
7. Playtime
8. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
9. Profound Desires of the Gods
10. Utamaro and His Five Women.

Aguirre Wrath of God. It was great movie. Aguirre
ranting at the end in his raft over taken by monkeys and dead bodies was some haunting stuff.
It's kinda odd how much you can appreciate Kinski's acting even with the dubbed voices.

The World's End

Unlike the prior two movies in this trilogy this one made a connection with me on the first watch. I've thought about if for two hours now and cannot rank it compared to Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. I honestly don't even know how to rank those two versus each other. They're so different, that the only comparison I want to make is the confidence in terms of acting, directing, and overall production. To compare which is thematically better is a real struggle. Throw this one in that takes elements of both, with the filmmaking maturity of Wright, Pegg and Frost and it's even harder to discuss.

The World's End is as layered, maybe even moreso than the predecessors. This final chapter on the face of it seems to take the misguided criticism of Shaun's ending and make the humanity a serious part of why this cast of character were brought back together. I feel that they made it the driving force for why this films exists. That has been a point of contention for 10 years now and this felt like a calculated response to explain whay that movie end that way and how important character motivations and personal relationships are in a movie.

There are a lot of visual cues as are the norm. The bars themselves seem like the most blatant, but I definitely did not pick up on all of them right away. The first two, yes. The last one, duh. You have the pub with the proverbial
sirens of the sea
that are even in the last Ice Age movie and of course the creepy
twins
which are horror movie staple. Getting past even those there is a lot still to be uncovered for sure and a second viewing will be required. I maintain that it clicked because of how the others worked on rewatch. Drinking at the pubs won't be simple, nothing is this trilogy is that simple or straightforward. The human element has been worked into Shaun and Fuzz so I was interested to see how the opening segment of the five characters and the reveal of where Gary's narration occurred would show its importance later on. That gets me to Simon Pegg who turned in his best acting yet. One thing that I heard about this movie before watching it tonight was that Pegg wasn't likeable. Watching it, I don't see how that could have been the take way. He's a fuck up for sure, desperately trying to relive former glory. Someone who thinks too highly of himself and at the same time wants his friends to have a great time. He has charm and a drive to do something unlike his more successful counterparts.

I don't have much else to say other than I can't wait to watch it again.

It's not terribly complicated, Dredd is what happened when someone tried, and succeeded actually, to emulate the sci-fi action films of the 80ies and early 90ies. Personally, I love it.

---------------------------

I saw Prisoners the other day and holy shit, that film looks - spectacular -

It is incredible. Seriously, everyone here should see it.

Blackfish

That was a tough watch, but then I never wanted to go to Sea World anyway. Although the feeling of being lifted into the air by an orca must be a great feeling like when you're lifted up by your dad as a kid. I love Sea World's stupid response to it. Of course it can't be balanced if you're denying to be interviewed!

Best documentary still this year was The Act of Killing.

After not watching movies for months, decided to catch up on some of the bigger 2013 releases

Elysium - major disappointment after district 9. plus points for jodie fosters ridiculous accent, turned it into a comedy.
Man of Steel - bad
Kick Ass 2 - terrible
Oblivion - okay
Evil Dead - great gore, pretty bad everything else. These kids ain't no Bruce Campbell.

Must have been some better things to check out, mxgt!

You could/should have known all of those would be bad.

I know, but I wanted to see first hand how bad they were so I could shit on them on GAF!

The good stuff comes soon. I hope.

Took advantage of having Hulu plus finally.

Three Colors: Blue
I've wanted to start the trilogy after hearing some great things. Beautiful movie. Loved the way the music would cut in and it would fade to black for brief moments. Dealt with love and loss powerfully.

Couple questions:
-Julie kills the mice, and avoids children at all costs. Yet she does eventually (?) love again (olivier). Does this show her "getting over" the death of her husband, while maintaining the same pain from her daughters death?
-How does the affair affect her? Seems like she is a different character afterwards.

Excited to watch the other two.

Elysium - major disappointment after district 9. plus points for jodie fosters ridiculous accent, turned it into a comedy.

Powerfully dislikable film.

I would say that it is hard to imagine it being worse, but a look at Wikipedia indicates that it might easily have been even more absurd.

The main role was first offered to Watkin Tudor Jones (aka Ninja), a South African rapper, who despite being a fan of District 9 (he has a D9 tattoo on his inner lip) did not take the role. The role was then offered to rapper Eminem, but he wanted the film to be shot in Detroit. That was not an option for the two studios, so Blomkamp moved on to Damon as his next choice.

I thought Damon brought absolutely nothing memorable to the table, such a bland 'performance'.

For me: Bland perfromance = Damon. Sure he has been good in few movies, but I would have enjoyed Bourne series much more if they had somebody else as Bourne.

He brought a nice vulnerability to action heroes, seeing him get fucked up and keep on going was great. Brought back a little John McClane when other movies wouldn't go for that. Just more believable that he could be a real agent, but also had the stern look for being the dominating force in a scene. Doug Liman and Greengrass did great directing to fit him into the role, while no movie/director could ever sell Renner as an action hero or as decent talent. What a bitch as Hawkeye, what a bitch as a Mission Impossible sidekick, what a bitch as a crook in The Town.

Films I've seen in cinemas in 2013:

Les Miserables
Iron Man 3 (Twice)
Man of Steel
The Wolverine
Prisoners
Gravity
Thor: The Dark World
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

3 Hugh Jackman films this year...interesting.

Bourne as character is great, no disbute there. Damon as Bourne isn't fitting. I don't think he brings anything to table. Plenty of good actors who could have done the role.

Forget to add Elysium.

And Damon sold me on the character. If they're relatively unknown for those kind of roles, I can agree on others doing the role well. Otherwise, high profile actors would be a bit distracting but this is a hypothetical. I thought he fit the tortured antihero archetype well.

2. Early Summer

I'll have to watch those first two movies promptly because Marienbad is one of my all time favorites.

On another note, I'm not sure which movies are really 2013 movies... what date do you guys go by? I liked To The Wonder, Frances Ha and What Macie Knew but those are 2012 according to IMDb.

Both Floating Clouds and Early Summer are available on Hulu Plus. The former having no DVD release in Region 1 yet. Of the films I listed I think that A Moment of Innocence is the most like Marienbad, though - not for content, but because it is another film that challenges our ideas of filmic conventions, using a story within a story with unclear boundaries all presented as semi-documentary/recreation. But it's also a lot more joyous and cheerful (and easy to follow) than Marienbad was.

Usually IMDB lists the first date the film was available for public viewing, which is often at festivals that could predate the wide release by months or a year even, but all release dates (domestic and international) should be listed further down on the film's page.

Basically the date of the widest release in my country (the US). All of those are 2013.

So over the last two days..

Stripes Not seen before, can't go wrong with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, John Candy etc.. also Sean Young was a total babe. Was funny will checkout again the future

Elysium Mentioned already

The World's End Was pretty good, definitely weaker than Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz though..

Safety not Guaranteed Nice quirky movie, not exactly what I expected

Despicable Me 2 Was good, don't remember much of the first film but this series seems to be decent enough.

The Family Also good, definitely dragged in place and went on a little too long

Since everybody else was doing it, here's my top 10 for films seen for the first time in 2013 that were released prior to 2013 (in no particular order).

1. The Devils
2. The Good, The Bad, The Weird
3. The Stunt Man
4. The Body Snatcher
5. Martyrs
6. Excision
7. The Ghost Ship
8. Black Dynamite
9. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
10. Suicide Club

Went back through and looked at everything I've seen from this year that I'd include on my year end list, and it's kind of disappointing.

Side Effects
The Place Beyond the Pines
Spring Breakers
Only God Forgives
The Grandmaster
Gravity
Prisoners
Frances Ha
The Great Beauty

I guess Spring Breakers would by my favorite so far. I might even pick The Place Beyond the Pines. I feel like there's about 5 films I still need to see this month alone that would hopefully make my list though. Still need to see Before Midnight, which I own, but have yet to watch.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated, but I'm in Europe so no Hulu Plus for me. Thank the gods for BFI Video, right?

I'll just wait for some lists from you guys and filter out the ones I like :)

In that case, Floating Clouds is available on Region 2 disc if you're looking to track it down.

who else thinks Moonrise Kingdom is Wes Anderson's worst movie?

If by worst you mean second best then shhyeah.

Eating Raoul: 6/10. LO...L? I mean, I guess a couple of times yeah. Didn't take too long to get over the amateur acting but it's definitely there, gnawing at you the entire time.
The Wild One: 4/10. This is what happens when a movie's reputation is built on an AFI top 100 quotes of all time list. Cornball as shit and Brando doing a terrible Brando impression the entire time.
Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls of Gahoo'loololol: 6/10. Zack Synder's masterpiece.
