Movies You've Seen Recently |OT| Dec 2014

The Host was on TV the other day. I put aside the fact it was based on a novel by the most famous fan fiction writer on earth and gave it a shot because fuck it, aliens.

Well I now have a definitive answer when someone asks me "whats the worst movie you have ever seen?" I used to say the X-files sequel but to be honest I was just bored to tears by that one. The Host on the other hand is the kind of thing that leaves you wanting to give up on everything and go die in a forest somewhere covered in bear shit. I'd rather have hornets be born inside my testicles and stab their way out than watch this movie again. It is so offensively stupid and poorly made that I was depressed for two days straight knowing I will never get that time back and I could have doing something more satisfying like fucking a box of crushed glass.

Can anyone point me to a better performance by an actress than Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence, because god damn that shit is still haunting me two days later

Just got back from Mockingjay Pt 1. I enjoyed the first one, really didn't like the second one, and this one was pretty meh, all things considered. I was fully expecting a lot of lead-in and was prepared to be underwhelmed. Some of Jennifer Lawrence's scenes just made me laugh.

(Also, there was a trailer for that Divergent sequel. That may have been the worst trailer I've seen in ages. It may have been entirely composed of CG, save for the actress. I hope that tanks.)

Eh, top 5 last month?

1. Big Hero 6
2. 22 Jump Street
3. Good Will Hunting
4. Neighbors
5. Interstellar

Yeah, I've been slacking. :lol

Man, this Locke movie is truly remarkable.

But what is that accent Tom Hardy is trying to do? He sometimes sounds indian.

Why don't use his real accent.

Picked up 4 movies yesterday (the place near my house has a rent 1 get 1 free promotion on Tuesdays). The movies I rented were:

-A Most Wanted Man
-The Rover
-Breakout
-The Prince

If you havent heard of the last 2 before, its because they are straight to dvd films, which I have to admit are a guilty pleasure of mine. I watched both last night and my thoughts on each film are:

Breakout (2013)- Brendan Fraser plays a dad who 'breaks out' of prison to rescue his kids who witnessed a murder in the woods of Ontario, Canada from a psychopathic ex-con (Dominic Purcell) and his brother (Ethan Suplee). You can definitely tell this film had a low budget; nonetheless I liked the film quite a bit. The script was very basic, but I was just glad that the child actors didn't annoy me too much, which I thought would be a given just from looking at the DVD case on this movie lol. Watching this film made me sad for Fraser though; I'll always just remember him from the Mummy films (at least it looked like he was having fun in those movies).

The Prince (2014)- Jason Patrick plays an ex-hitman who has to rescue his daughter in New Orleans after she is kidnapped by Omar (Bruce Willis) whose family was killed in an attempted hit by Patrick at the start of the film. This had much better production values than Breakout, and I was pleased to see John Cusack near the end of the film (even though he mumbled through all of his lines). That said, the action was very boring and this film reminds me why Jason Patrick does not headline movies anymore; he just doesn't have the charisma for a movie like this (although I did like him in Narc).

Anyway, I'm going to watch The Rover and A Most Wanted Man tonight; my expectations are much higher for those films, as I have heard great things about both.

Sparrow (2008): What a goddamn city Hong Kong...
Anyway, a lovely romantic film (though not really a romance), more lighthearted and (literally) brighter than the other Johnnie To films i've seen, but it does retain some of that Noir-ish taste at times.
Some of the shots are right down jaw dropping, also thanks to the beautifully varied and intricate architecture of the city, that creates incredible visual geometries.
And holy shit that climax, how many movies can sport a final showdown/action scene involving
pickpocketing
?

Attack the Block (2011) - Edgar Wright executively produced this comedy about an alien invasion in a London council estate (think Harry Brown crossed with Critters) . I put it off for three years thinking it wouldn't be any good - I loved it and found it to be really funny.

VideoGame: The Movie (2014) - Zach Braff's crowdfunded documentary on video games. I was pretty disappointed by this, it glossed over some console systems and others were omitted.

Interstellar (2014) - I liked it but there's a nagging feeling that I was let down, I guess I just expected more from a Christopher Nolan movie but what that would be, I don't know.

Can anyone recommend me any mind bender type films?
Something along the lines of Enemy or David Lynch's films.

Struggling to find anything to watch lately, feel like I've seen everything good.

Snowpiercer?

Best if you go into it knowing nothing about the movie like I did.

enemy borrows a lot from bergman's through a glass darkly. it's also a good introduction to bergman if you haven't checked him out yet.

I actually have had that here ready to watch for awhile, kept putting it off though as some people were saying it sucked and others said it was good. Will watch it.

I've seen Persona and enjoyed it, though I probably need to see it again.
Will check out A Glass Darkly.

37 minutes. 37 god damn minutes. That's how close I was to finishing Inherent Vice, but others deemed it too dense to finish and we stopped. It was so good too. It's hard to follow and intentionally convoluted, but all the performances are ace, the look and feel of the movie is, for lack of a more original word, groovy, and the soundtrack was sick as well. It's just constant dialogue and narration, which I fucking loved. It's funny, it's hazy, it's everything I was hoping for. Sometimes it pisses me off that some people want everything spoon-fed to them in movies, that they don't take chances with more in depth movies, but such is life. I eagerly await the moment I can finish it.

I'm extremely late to the party (Invite probably lost in the post or something)

But how good was Guardians of the Galaxy?!

Watched it on Monday and felt like watching it again.

It was a screener DVD for voting season. Was watching it with a few of my friends, one of whom has the connection.
Ah, I am kind of jealous. That's no way to experience a movie for the first time (quitting halfway).

I woke up this morning to the ending of Lost in Translation. Already feel like crap.

Yup, I saw it for the first time last week. Best Marvel movie to date. I've since rewatched it, which is something I almost never do these days. Winter Soldier and Days of Future Past were very solid as well, so it was really a good year for superhero movies. They seem to be getting better.

I could not choose, so pick any of these as my response.

I say; get new friends. But keep the one with the hook-up obviously.

Gonna watch Maze Runner this next weekend, also have some catching up to do with the 007 movies

I would've asked to borrow that screener for those remaining 37 minutes. Or hit everyone in the room with a pressure point muscle lock kung fu move and kept watching. Something, anything.

I enjoyed the second film a lot, which surprised me because I didn't really like first film or even 3rd season.

I'm glad they're done with the Inbetweeners now and not milking it. Although I ca guarantee there will be a "The Worlds End" style film in years time when they get back together for one last adventure.

Drug War (2013): Nice to see that Johnnie's still got it (this being a very recent film of his).
I liked it a lot, especially the crazy finale, because the film really builds up and explodes in violence very suddenly, and doesn't hold back either.
On the one hand, i wouldn't have minded a bit more depth to some of the players involved, but on the other hand, the very fast pace didn't allow for much of that, and we got enough as it is to make the characters at least intriguing.
The only thing i'd say is, it was weird to see that
all of the top dogs "uncles" turn out to be both idiots and goofballs; compared to something like Election, where they are pretty intimidating.

That first scene. Those hotel scenes. The tension. Wonderful. Didn't like the ending that much though.

I just loved how
Timmy kept getting away with it, and was surprised by how ruthless he turns out.
That bus scene, where he lures out all the uncles, and closes the bus doors in front of them (leaving them out in the open) was amazing.

Also, the
lethal injection
scene was still hard to watch, despite everything that came before it. So creepy.

Also wanted to say that making the scene where he
sort of "mourns" his dead wife, into sign language, made hit harder for me, because it could've been way cheesier with a monologue, instead they sort of leave it to his expression to bring out the emotional load.

Top from Nov

1 The Babadook (it was phenomenal)
2 Birdman (great movie, a must watch)

Thats it.

Watched tons of other movies.. but nothing that speaks to me as a must watch or top 5.

I've been slacking big time, I pay for Cineworld Unlimited and have only gone to the cinema once in the last few weeks, but that will change soon.

Anyway the movie I saw was Horrible Bosses 2. Not as good as the first but overall decent and worth a watch if you literally have nothing else to do.

Poetic Justice (John Singleton, 1993)
Enjoyed it. Predictable but I did like how it showed the ups and downs of romance.

I'm glad they're done with the Inbetweeners now and not milking it. Although I ca guarantee there will be a "The Worlds End" style film in years time when they get back together for one last adventure.
Yeah, Series 3 and the first film were big disappointments. Maybe my enjoyment with the second film had to do with not having any expectations going in.
