Fuck! This was his plan all along!

(Switches to William Shatner voice)

Kaeptaaaaaiiinnn!

Saw Birdman on Sunday. Amazing film, probably one of the best I've ever seen, personally. Just loved it on so many levels. Keaton was fantastic. Ending was, well, bad, but the rest of the movie was incredible.

" There are mysteries to the universe we were never meant to solve. But who we are and why we are here, are not among them. Those answers we carry inside. "

Big, loud, fun, dumb, plotholes, product placement up the ass and explosive, over the top action all the way through with impressive CGI, one of the best if not the best in the CGI department. Watched it in that mindset as I usually do with all Transformers movies and to be honest, I enjoyed it. Easily the best one to me for the simple fact they got rid of Shia Labuttfuck. Reference bluray material in both video quality and audio quality, spectacular with probably the best 3D I have seen since Gravity's bluray. I felt that it did drag at the end, would be better if they cut off 30 minutes or so from the movie since it clocks in at 2 hours and 45 minutes. I think what disappointed me the most is that the main theme of the series was no where to be seen and the "shit's about to go down son" score was not used in the movie except for one scene. That's like one of the best things about the movies to me atleast when you listen to that score with the Autobots on screen.

Another thing is that the ending is clearly sequel baiting much more than all the previous films were by far but the context in which how it ended was pretty interesting.
I wish it would take place entierly on Cybertron but I doubt it.
In terms of performances, I only felt that Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer did a great job.
Dem Dinobots were pretty badass as well.
Overall though, I only recommend it for those that want a dumb, over the top action movie as well as see different types of Transformers appear and have them duking it out, but that's about it. The last two films are miles better than the first two.

Kingpin - Had never seen it before, and enjoyed it. It's a pretty funny/entertaining movie. Normally, I don't like movies with things like inflatable boobs and other parodied elements but this was an anomaly.

Who did The Kaeptain used to be? Clearly he/she changed their name at some point if they've been a member since 2009. I feel like this should be obvious to me.

Oh, and relevant to the chatter about Boogie Nights previously, Grantland published a great (and extremely lengthy, as usual) "oral history" today:

Having never watched Twin Peaks, I decided to watch through it now that a third season was announced. I absolutely loved it and so I also had to check out some of the Lynch movies I hadn't seen yet: The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart.
I liked them, though I have to say they somewhat felt a bit "Lynch light" compared to movies like Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway. Some awesome moments though, Bobby Peru was sick :P

How the Death of Mid-Budget Cinema Left a Generation of Iconic Filmmakers MIA

I don't have the time to finish reading this rn but it's decent (if obvious) so far. Capable summary of why it's hard for guys like Lynch, Waters, Lee to make movies today despite past success
him and ander are going to be in the internship 2 , i've heard.

We were but I left The Internship 2 to co-star in the hybrid Jump Street sequel/Men In Black reboot, which at my behest is now also a prequel to Ghosts of Mars

Holy shit. Didn't know that.

I watched Cleo From 5 to 9. Thought it was a beautiful movie about a lady come to terms with the reality of death. Not to mention some contemplation on celebrity. Beautifully shot and I loved the format they used here.

I have so many Criterion's waiting for me, but finals :[

The Illusionist. It was pretty good, but I liked The Prestige way more.

EDIT: I also didn't get it, anyone care to discuss/explain?

At the Devil's Door

It was pretty terrible. Nothing ever happened, bad acting, and really no mood.

Tho i think i am spoiled by the Babadook dook dook.

Btw... any recommendations of must see movies? i feel like i am running out of movies lately, and would like some recommendations. I'll go back through the thread as well. Thanks :D

The Marriage of Maria Braun
My first Fassbinder....zzzzzzzz. I was with it for a little bit, but after a very long half hour it just became less and less interesting for me. That was right around the time that
Hermann returned and Maria (accidentally?) killed Bill
so maybe my interest waning was timed with Maria becoming more and more unlikable. Bizarre ending. Reading up on wiki, it sounds like they were running out of time and money toward the end, which is exactly how
Maria's death
comes off.

Les Diaboliques
Maybe a little slow at the beginning, but goddamn did this get creepy. The scene of
Delassalle rising out of the tub
was some unnerving shit. Did not see that ending coming at all, Clouzot definitely got me. Liked this a lot more than The Wages of Fear.

I feel a similar occurrence happen in the video game industry. That mid-budget, AA PS1/2 game disappeared in the margin of the would-be AAA blockbuster franchises and the little indie productions.

What would you call something like Rime, if not AA? I think AA went away for a while, but will be coming back as indie studios get more attention from the big guys.

Point Break - It was kind of cheesy, but pretty good overall. I enjoyed it. Not Keanu's best acting performance, but I like the guy. The end was pretty silly, though.

Also, how awesome was Patrick Swayze? May he R.I.P.

Someone deleted Carlito's Way on me, so I need to wait for it to re-air to PVR it again.

Watched Frank after Best Buy had it cheap on Blu-Ray. Such a fun weird film. Fassbender was amazing in it as well, his performance deserves more attention than it's getting.

New York Stories - An anthology, 3 short films from 3 big name directors with obvious love from the Big Apple. First one is by Scorsese, which I think really works. Its like Marty in microcosm; exploring the male id and the internal struggle with making sense of life(and women's affectations), restless frantic camera movements, great performances, 60s music needle drops. The second film is by Francis Ford Coppola, and its damn near unwatchable its so bad. Its like the worst kind of children's film, tacky and maudlin and shrill kid actors and painfully unfunny and fuck me. Its 30 minutes that feel like 30 hours. The last film is by Woody Allen, and its really breezy and quirky and really fuckin' funny, funny in a way his late 80 humorless character studies of emotionally distant people like September and Another Woman never were. The kind of straight ahead goofball stuff that works in small doses, or in this case a 30 minute film instead of 90. Its the best of the three. surely.

so yeah, 2 out of 3 aint bad.

I think I'm going to watch Falling Down tonight. It's on in 45 minutes, or so.

Is it any good? One friend told me it was years ago, but he had odd taste.

Definitely blame Icarus-daedlius/CFK leaving and lowering our sex appeal to Borgnine and Femmeworth. Can't keep up with all these new kids.

Foxcatcher - Caught this one the over night at my local indie theater. The acting is the driving force behind this film. Carell, Ruffalo and Tatum are all great, especially the first two and it seems as though they're getting a lot of award attention. The film itself is pretty dull for something that entitally seemed pretty interesting (especially since I didn't know too much about the story itself). The are times where the film focuses on events that don't really have much use or payoff and skips things (I read up on the story after the film) that would've been more compelling. It's not a short film either and towards the end, it starts to feel it's length. Worth checking out for the performances alone and not really a bad story but flounders out a bit into the "what could have been". 6/10

The Equalizer

I was pretty happy and had a great time watching the movie. He is what Jack Reacher movie should've been like. Great cast, and good acting overall, no unnecessary gore or violence either, but when it happened it was awesome. I recommend it.

It took like years to find this thread. Hello. The OP is like my Movies You've Seen Recently thread: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=45916643#post45916643. I love that I put that Shame sucks in the OP picture. I am one funny dude.

man, that thread is almost like 2 years ago now.

so uh, watched the three colours trilogy and the double life of veronique and none of them felt particularly great to me, but that just might be my aversion to presenting interconnectedness as having inherent profundity. White was my favourite just because of the "second chance" scene, though i'd say red was the better constructed of the three. I liked blue the least due to the inaccesibility/stoicism of the protagonist being mirrored in the at arms length approach of the movie itself, which stuck out more and more as the layering of heavy music and editing tricks stacked up. Veronique might as well have been a part of this trilogy with its divinations on empathy based phantom emotions and whatnot.

This is so very different than me. I watched all 4 films close together last year or maybe very early this year, I can't quite remember, and was blown away by all of them. White was the weakest in my opinion, but still a fun romp.

Is Snowman still on here? I haven't seen that dude in a while. Anyone see Inherent Vice? Might go see it at the Angelika after work tonight. I hope PT Anderson can rebound after the Master.

Probably gonna catch it there on Sunday. Heard good things but I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more awards attention.

I am curious about it. I might go Saturday afternoon now. Me and the old lady are gonna stay in and watch stuff.

Does anyone have Fandor? I quite like some of the films they have on there with certain things like Little Feet just coming to theaters.

After seeing the hype online, I checked out:

The Babadook

I enjoyed it but didn't think it was anything special (7/10).
I've seen first hand
the main theme
and was able to figure it out from
desire for rest, dad's clothing on projected monster, and the fact she wrote children's books just to name a few.

I was left silenced in my chair at the cinema. That was really well done.

It's on Youtube. Obvious spoilers.
that scene was done better in a little movie which takes place in a certain town in china starring a certain jack.
Chinatown.

also, what took down Kaeptain? was it Exodus? fucking Exodus?

Magnolia - that was a fast 3 hours. phillip seymour hoffman and john c. reily made me sad and happy. pretty sure i'm pro-frogs. why do people hate this? some stories didn't work as well as others, but as a whole it was a 8/10

Laura - the clock gun was silly, but i really liked it. don't really understand why the plot synopsis says it's about the detective falling in love with the murdered lady when that was the least interesting plot-line in the film. also that wasn't really what it was about. last scene was great though. will watch more Preminger. 8/10

Munich - not bad. 7/10

The Fountain - didn't expect to like it as much as i did seeing as it's a gaf darling. speed racer was was just ok but that other movie gaf likes sucks. 9/10

In a World...

Really good comedy. Doesn't reach, doesn't try to be too clever. A little heavy on the romance and sentimentality down the stretch but it works in favor of the story. A lot of familiar faces. I want to watch more stuff with Lake Bell in it now.

Edit: it's on US Netflix

Insomnia (2002) on Netflix. Such a great film directed by Christopher Nolan starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams.
