My biggest surprise in visiting Europe

I've spent 5 weeks all over Europe now and I gotta say most of your average daily diets are awful, at least from the places I see as a traveler. The irony is that they eat like shit and stay skinny (dat walking culture though).

It's not fair that Americans are the fat ones (our food is spiked with HFCS so of course we're all fat no matter what we do).

French people eat so much fucking bread and sweets and chocolate it's absurd. Every hostel and hotel breakfast I've had served included rolls with chocolate chips. Every breakfast cafe sells CAKE AND PIE for breakfast. Fucking crepes man, they're just carbs folded upon Nutella and store bought fruit jam. You guys just munch on sweets until lunch time, when it's time for more bread, and maybe around dinner time you'll eat something green that is not an onion with some wine.

Germans? Pretty much the same. You guys graze on pastries and beer like its oxygen. It's very hard to find something open for breakfast that cells, I don't know, something that isn't sausage or bread. Your biergartens are just an excuse to guzzle liters of beer with fattening foods.

Czechs drink 150L of beer A YEAR. Men drink 500L of beer a year. Yet Prague had less fat people than any of my cities back in Texas.

Spaniards at least have some variety with tapas. The first country I visited where I felt like I had a choice in how I would die from fried foods.

The worst is many restaurants are not open between 3-6 pm. :(

As far as being a traveller goes, it's actually way easier for me to eat healthy in America. Not only are there tons of 24 hour food options available, most sell several different types of food at once. And different food groups. Not just sausage and cheese and bread and sauerkraut. I can get a salad for less than 8 euro in America.

That, and the fact that water is not a free natural resource in your socialist haven (seriously, why do you care so much about free access to basic human needs but you nickle and dime people to use the toilet and charge more for water than beer) means that I am encourage to order beer, tea or soda almost every time I go out instead of water (which is usually more expensive because it's fancy tiny bottled stuff).

I have a newfound appreciation for my food options in America. Yeah our cheese and chocolate sucks, but I feel like I can find healthy options more easily.

Edit: yes I am being hyperbolic and generalizing. Don't take this too seriously. After discussing in this thread it dawned on me that maybe Europeans don't eat the same at restaurants as they do at home (which is different than America, I think, where we basically eat the same kinds of food at both, we just go out to eat for either convenience or higher quality). So yeah, maybe it's not the average daily diet. But it's what I frequently observed locals eating.

Ask for a jug of water or glass of tap water. Never paid for water in a restaurant.

Fresh bread, who doesn't want that.

I have and many places refuse. Some offer it though. Has depended.

Bars usually will charge you for water, though, which is just awful.

How? You don't have to eat all of your portion, btw. I certainly don't. Although I agree that our portions should be smaller.

Not only is our food cheaper if you stay out of places like NYC, we have literally every type of cuisine because our country is an immigrant melting pot. And every place serves water for free and almost every restaurant will serve salads or vegetarian options.

Perhaps you could travel around Asia next, asking if anyone has some lettuce, or maybe something with avocado.

Toilets are usually free everywhere if you're a customer. And since when was bread or tea unhealthy :| ? Besides, if you eat in moderation, even if you eat "unhealthy" food, you won't get fat.

Mind you I haven't eaten many home cooked meals here, I said in the OP I'm judging based off a travelers lifestyle. In my case it's eating at local restaurants.

I don't eat hostel food often? I've eaten it twice in 5 weeks. I eat at local restaurants. Besides, hostel food is usually homecooked food.

They eat both. I've seen them. Mind you I didn't live in a German house but I went to German local eateries.

Yeah but the local restaurants are still widely different from what we eat at home. We go to a restaurant to eat something special, not because we're too lazy to cook.

Eh, 6,5 millions of adults are considered "obese" in France. Which makes like 14% of the population. Now I don't know about USA :p But it's true that weight is something seen as important here.

As for french people food habits... eeeeeh, not sure what you're talking about. First, hotel breakfast isn't the same as your typical breakfast. In hotel, they'll want to offer you a breakfast that sounds heavy or good.

Usually, people will be fine with a bowl of cereals, or a hot coco/coffee with sliced bread and butter. It's all about quantity. As for café, sure they sell pastry, but no one force you to buy one with your coffee :p

As for crepes, this isn't something you eat everyday, or heck, every week. That's why it's usally coming with more sweetness. And yes, bread is a part of our daily food habits, but it's all about quantity.
 
There is a growing body of evidence that the city environment you live in and whether or not it facilitates walking as a form of transportation can have a great influence on how fat you are. It might even the single biggest reason.

I suspect the enrichment process is part of the issue many people have with wheat products- I'm allergic to something in it, where I can have organic flour or regular white rice without a problem, but end up with irritation if I eat enriched rice (like at Chipotle) or regular flour.

I've been to LA and NYC, most I saw was unhealthy, fat, fastfood stuff. My stomach did not agree with it. But that's probably also because those stand out and are in the more touristy areas. Same in Europe that way, you need to know where to look sometimes. You can find a variety of food just fine in most European cities.

Bread doesn't make me fat. Must be all the walking. I love bread. It's the standard breakfast here instead of cereal or something.

Comparing a supermarket bread section compared to an European one was strange. Over here we basically have bakeries inside the supermarket most of the time, so its all fresh. American ones... yeah... maybe it's better in some places, but not the ones I saw.

This "bread makes you fat" thing makes no sense. Look at any culture where bread is the staple. Skinny people! I don't know what's happened in the last 50 years, but we've been eating bread for 10,000 years so let's not say that that was the problem the whole time.

We might have ONE croissant or brioche in the morning with coffee and yeah we eat faaaaaaar less meat and more carbs than Americans. But we do eat vegetables. And lots of them. Have you only been to cheap fast food joints or what ?

The day we started to get fat is the day we allowed your horrible american fast food chains to open stores in France. Now we've the same problem with obesity and diabetes (not on the same scale though).

Well, you're doing comparisons, and a comparison between a "traveller's lifestyle" in Europe vs. living in the US is a bit weird. Because of course there will be large differences here.

I fear you may have gone to the completely wrong places to eat breakfast in Germany. Biergarten? Their sole purpose is to drink beer and eat fat food. I mean, that shouldn't be surprising really.
It's an easy mistake to make though and for those without better knowledge it may be hard at times to find good bakeries, cafés or restaurants to have breakfast.

We do eat a lot of bread. But the cakes and pastries, you don't have to eat, you know. A common French breakfast is just coffee, and "tartines" (slices of bread with butter and jam). Even croissants are more something for the week-end, usually. And those cakes in cafes aren't really for breakfast, but for dinner.
Nobody eats breakfast in a French cafe anyway, unless you just want a quick expresso. You either eat it at home if you're a local, or at the hotel if you're a tourist (and I can imagine that hotels just pack their breakfasts with many good things, but you don't have to eat it all).

To be fair, Sauerkraut is still popular among old people.

I haven't been to any restaurants here in america that are representative of my diet. They very much lack fresh vegetables and fruit and tend to have way big of portion of the meat and carbs (unless its a massive salad). Restaurants are pretty much for special occasions and people who are out of town

Pretty much. Many people don't do more than 10 minutes of walking/exercising in any given day since they use their car to go everywhere.

I haven't paid for water in like 10 years. Tap water is free everywhere. Even bars give you a glass of tap if you ask. It's even almost given with a coffee.

Also you probably got some reading or comprehension problem if you didn't find variety in Europe.... It's like ten times more varied than america and way better products too...

However you are right about restaurant closing between 3-6 and closing early. 24h service is just not in France culture AT ALL sadly.

Another point I forgot to mention, about "you stuff yourself with sweet things before lunch" : we don't, because we eat at specific hours. Food is serious business. ^^ We only eat at meal hours (morning, midday, evening), few restaurants would offer meals in the middle of the afternoon (or they're just for tourists, and you should avoid them). Another reason why we're less fat, probably.
