My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 4 |OT| Twilight Princess Returns

Whoever decided to let Josh Haber write an episode made a good decision, or maybe even the directorial change in bringing in Jim Miller is making a difference. This ep was rather enjoyable and even had the best Rarity treatment in ages. Fluttershy wasn't even annoying! Feels like S1 again.

Maybe expectations can be raised again, or maybe this will be like last season's ep 3. Who knows! It'd be great to simply write off S3 as an aberration.

It was a decent episode, but all the wasted potential brought it down quite a bit for me. The setting presented an excellent opportunity for some world-building, but in the end we got absolutely nothing on that front. Disappointing.

True, and the reactions given by the end of the episode were shared by myself as well, but when the bar is low it's easy to surpass it.

Some of the facial expressions and reaction-takes in this week's episode are priceless.
There's one from Fluttershy, in particular, that had me in stitches. (You'll know which one I'm talking about when you see it.)

Also, Twilight's nerding out seems even more over-the-top adorable now that she has wings. I didn't think that was possible.

Since I'm stuck on mobile, I'll keep my impressions brief.

Much better than the season 3 opener. Glad to have this show to look forward to every weekend again.

Yes, I'm well aware how pathetic that sounds.

We now have an awesome official banner picture for the thread, courtesy of Myke.

More of this should be behind spoiler tags guys. It is a leaked episode.
Yeah, I made a point of keeping my comments deliberately vague for just that reason.
Love the new banner from Myke. It's glorious.
It's missing a Belle Eve cameo but if he's circulating this artwork through non-GAF channels I can understand the omission.

Because it's not there. Not sure if it's still out there. The original source is missing from the file sharing website it was on.

I just watched it. I'm not going to give a link, but its there. Maybe someone posted another up.

Anyway, a fun episode. Season 4 seems off to a great start.

Ending was a little obvious. Sadly pinky seems to be getting a flanderized too. Shes always been a bit crazy, but she started off being just really hyperactive and manic, now she seems just nuts.

All this talk of nightmare moon and now shadow ponies? Origin time!

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
They live in Saddle Arabia. You can see them in the Season 3 episode Magic Duel near the end where Celestia is entertaining two Saddle Arabian dignitaries by having Twilight juggle woodland creatures.

Yeah but why would they be decorated in some ancient castle away from Saddle Arabia

They were other "horses" in season 1 too. Non-talking, normal horsey horses.

I guess that explains it too.

They're an old race.

Is that based on the Final Fantasy Tactics PSP boxart? Love it.
That is what I was going for, yes... since this is a gaming forum and everybody loves that game. I was hoping to raise an eyebrow or two among non-pony-fan GAFfers, in the good sense.

Unfortunately, I was late to the thread creation, so I guess a good part of the impact was lost.

So I have to admit I'm a little disappointed they didn't keep Pinklestia in the flashbacks. Would have been a great nod to include younger Luna as well. Probably thought kids would be too stupid to figure out who they are.

Also, Tabitha didn't sound at all like her Nightmare Moon from the pilot.
Was thinking both of these things, actually. Particularly the latter. Her voice was so much deeper originally; this Nightmare Moon was just a less prissy Rarity acting a villain.

For that matter, her stint as NMM was remarkably short-lived. No wonder the tales about her from Nightmare Night are so exaggerated - they only had a good five minutes to go off of, so word of mouth must've been fuzzy as all hell.

Decent episodes, otherwise, I suppose.

I kinda just take the attitude that the flashbacks Twilight experiences are compressed versions of what actually went down, in the same way that real dreams often don't conform to the normal flow of time.

As you say, the alternative is that Nightmare Moon's reign lasted literally about three and a half minutes.

It is possible that the conflict between Celestia and Luna had been going on for a while before she turned into NMM though.

Yup, judging by Luna's whole "There can only be one Princess in Equestria!" speech, I'm guessing things were already pretty rough between the two of them. Lots of latitude there to justify what was shown versus what we've been told in the past.

So, I waited for the newest episode to actually air on TV and.... I liked it. Yeah,
Pinkie
has the potential to really take a bad slide this season, but everyone else felt spot on, and it was nice to have a different sort of change of pace episode, even if it didn't push the plot along directly, it still provided some indirect movement (The diary, the tapestries, etc).

I think non-ponies will automatically click page one anyway, and not just the last page. Otherwise they would be totally lost.

Thanks for making this place more personalized for PonyGAF. It wouldn't feel the same without it.

re: ep - so he sowed the seeds of discord, the sisters took the magical heart of Everfree to defeat him, and kept it to consolidate their powers. Next thing you know, they're at each other's throat. I'm willing to buy Alicorn evil balance as long as I get a Dark Celestia story out of it in the future.

It's a shame, but it's still a really good piece and, for what little it's worth, I appreciate your effort.

On the Celestia/Luna thing: I feel like Luna going NMM and then being banished not five minutes later did diminish NMM's impact, as awesome as the flashback was. I like to think that perhaps NMM was a mystery enemy causing havoc in Equestria, and that the flashback was just the culmination of the conflict. Maybe Celestia had discovered that Luna was NMM, or Luna/NMM felt confident enough to reveal herself, or something.

Twilight Sparkle finds the diary of the gods and spends half the episode reading through it, and the only thing we learn is that Luna likes wacky slides.

Was that Luna's castle only? I thought Celestia said it was theirs.

It was theirs, after all it's the Palace of the Royal Pony Sisters, or the Palace of the Two Sisters. In fact, we can see the throne room, where there are two separate chairs with two tapestries above them.

I really wish they had Given Twilight regular pegasus wings all the time rather than just in animation errors where they forgot to give her those ugly giant wings.

The was just a fun episode. Classic idea with several parties in a scary location scaring each other, but it's pulled off really well.

Poor Fluttershy, though, putting her in a horror episode is kind of mean. Then again, as the easily startled one, she kind of has to be there. That scene where she thought Angel had been crushed was just cruel and funny at the same time. And they could totally do it because they had shown that Angel was okay several times before pulling it off, so we all know that Fluttershy is wrong about Angel being splattered.

Now we have the diaries as the new framing device. Was wondering what they'd do since Twilight isn't Celestia's student anymore. A diary works fine for that.

And then... THE SHADOW PONY! I wonder if that'll go anywhere. They did say they were going for a season long story arc, so we have 23 more episodes to see if there's a payoff. If what AJ speculated is true, then it begins to make a little more sense that Twilight saw Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon as part of the reason for the vines attacking in the first two episodes. What if it IS the darkness of Nightmare Moon lurking? This was the site where Luna was restored, wasn't it? In any case, it'll be interesting to see what they do with this.

Fantastic episode, loved it. Great choices of pair-ups, loads of laughs, a light sprinkling of lore, and even Pinkie's over-the-top antics felt right. Great debut for Josh Haber for sure.

TWILIGHT
GET EQUIPPED WITH TIME-STOPPER

Well, she really just froze their positions - Applejack didn't have much trouble moving her eyes or speaking.

Ha! Nice.

Interesting to see all these loose ends being left hanging this season. Between the Pony of Shadows, the chest/keys stuff and the "Alicorn magic" thing (which may turn out to be nothing) we're getting tons of things to think about between episodes.

Certainly fun to toss around, but more promising is the antics.

This season is off to a good start. Way beyond what I expected. After season 3, I was starting to think this show would jut go downhill. Glad it's fighting back. It's got that season 1 & 2 charm.

Discord is easily my favorite character.

It's actually all pretty promising so far. I can't really think of any aspect in the first three episodes that felt below-par (besides a lack of music, which I imagine will start to ramp up in the next few episodes).

Season 4 has definitely had a much stronger start than Season 3. The Crystal Empire opener had some nice moments (and songs) but it felt a little flat to me overall. Too Many Pinkie Pies wasn't bad either I don't think, but throwing in such a high-concept episode like that one so early on was a bit of a risky move.

They seem to be taking one step even further in the music department. Just listen to this BGM. I say damn.

My man. From my re-watching notes for Princess Twilight Sparkle - Part 2:

Me said:
...It's all quite beautiful, and for one of the first times since I started watching Friendship is Magic, I found myself really noticing the score. William Anderson has done a really wonderful job on this two-parter, with several old themes I recognised cropping up, and some amazing new ones slipping in, with one of my favourites being the mournful tune we hear as Celestia collects the Elements and faces her sister. If this is a new direction for the incidental music in the show, I am all the f*ck about it.
