My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) |OT| Big Screen, Small Horse

My question is if the movie is even going to be canon insofar as anything will ever get referenced in the show again. Sea ponies, pirates, the Storm King and his species.

For some reason, it annoyed me when the Rendy Review talked about how he watched the show "for several seasons" until Twilight became a princess (which happened in season 3's finale) and that he left at the same time Lauren Faust did (which was in the middle of season 2). Also, he was reaching for negatives when he put the presence of a Sia pony as the one thing in the bad section.

With the Letterboxd review, nice to see that the movie is open to some deeper analysis, though there was some reaching there too.

My question is if the movie is even going to be canon insofar as anything will ever get referenced in the show again. Sea ponies, pirates, the Storm King and his species.

About season 8,
a HasCon panel revealed that a new seapony character will appear in one of the episodes, though we don't know how strongly things will connect to the movie
.

Shame it seems like Lionsgate is dumping this. It's only getting released in over 2000 theaters anyway.

Lionsgate's animated division has been extremely poor up until this point. They've only published a ton of direct-to-video Barbie movies, Food Fight, and Norm of the North. This movie is by far the most quality thing they've ever published, and I strongly suspect that they aren't used to actually having a good movie on their hands to promote. Additionally I feel like they're not used to actually going all out and promoting something since again they've never really had an actual blockbuster on their hand. Lionsgate's marketing has been very dismal so far which is sad since I feel like this movie deserves WAY better then what it's gotten so far.

On the other hand, I've already discussed this at length in the OT but those estimates people are making are often based on the fact that they see "Lionsgate" and are familiar with their previous animated work and made estimates based off that. The estimates were so low for a movie of this scope that I can only assume that the people making them weren't very familiar with the movie and didn't think it would be any good. One of the predictors said it would get 21.5 Million Domestic which is Norm of the North levels of bad. I don't think the opening weekend will be particularly strong, but it should probably get strong word of mouth and have decent legs, especially since the only family movie competition it has for the rest of October is Lego Ninjago which isn't doing very well.

I'm not seeing anything too alarming or out of sorts from the early financials or projections for this type of films. Box Office Mojo is reporting an opening screen count of 2,500 theaters. The Numbers is speculating that the production budget was $25 million (which is probably a slight over-estimate).

Norm of the North generated a $6.7 million opening weekend and a $17 million total domestic take off 2,400 screens despite being a piece of trash.

This film will be considered a win by all parties concerned given the franchise's built-in merchandise machine should it match its production budget with solely its domestic box office take. Norm of the North pretty much accomplished this. And I suspect MLP will net itself a little bit of surplus on top of that if it winds up in any way, shape or form decent quality-wise, which appears to be the case.

Will probably do well on home video also, but I'll be surprised if it tops $10m next weekend.

Lionsgate is a third rate "newer company" who's gotten some major hits because other studios didn't want to take a crack at them. I'm not surprised. The biggest quality films they've released are Aardman's.

Honestly I think if reviews are really good, this could good enough business. It has a few weeks to itself in terms of animation content, but I don't see forsee it opening higher then 10m at most though, because it's not getting as much of a big push.

Despite losing interest in the show early in the season I'm very curious about the movie. Will probably see it if I get the chance. Also very curious to see how the critics not familiar with the source material take the film, as the previous posted reviewers were.

For what it's worth, a couple of critics unfamiliar with the show did review Equestria Girls years ago (not all listed on Rotten Tomatoes), and they were either positive about it or said it decent for a kid's movie. And if that's the response the first EQG movie got, when it's a rushed hodgepodge barely held together by Twilight-learning-how-to-act-human comedy, a catchy song, and the innate charm of the characters, then I have to imagine the Movie will be received more warmly.

Plus, there are some messages describing a warm critical reaction during the world premiere and early showings.

So it looks like the embargo is actually going to drop Thursday, the day before the official release date and when a lot of theaters are going to start showing the movie. This info is from a film critic named Jvanny Evans' Twitter. Looking through his tweet history it looks like he likes Disney movies but hasn't checked out the show before, and it seems like he really liked it.

It is really bizarre that the movie is getting embargoed until the day before, I think that goes without saying. Typically day-before embargos are usually used by movies and games that the publishers know are going to be panned and end up having the embargo drop as late as possible in an attempt to try to mitigate how those reviews will end up negatively affecting sales. First off, I think it's safe to say that the people that would go to the MLP movie before reviews drop are the same people that would have gone anyway even if it got terrible reviews. Opening weekend sales was likely just going to be fans of the show or little kids, and again the majority of them probably wouldn't have been deterred even if it did review poorly. Frankly I feel like this movie can only serve to gain from people knowing how well it reviewed because if it does well then it might attract people that would have otherwise been uninterested, and if it reviews poorly the people that liked the show would have seen it anyway.

This is even further compounded by the fact that all signs so far are making it look like this movie is actually going to review very well. After all of the reviews/impressions so far the most negative we've heard about the movie is that it's not the best thing ever but it's still pretty good. And there's been talks of critics loving it too but not being able to talk about it yet. Now obviously all the actual reviews so far have been by either fans of the show or kids and there's a massive difference between a second-hand account by someone that loves the show and wants the movie to be good saying that critics loved it and critics actually loving it, but given all we've heard so far it would be extremely surprising if it ends up doing poorly enough that it would actually impact ticket sales. I keep bringing this up but this kinda strikes me as Lionsgate being used to producing shitty animated movies and having the embargo drop as late as possible thinking this one wouldn't be any good either.

Also I've been getting some 5 second Youtube ads for the movie now. Yay, I guess.

I can't really speak to Hollywood, but for the games industry, I don't think there's any evidence that late embargos are bad signs. If a game is embargoed at all, that means the publisher went out of its way to get advanced copies out to a group of people and want all of them talking about it at the same time right before release. In games, it seems no advanced copies or post-release embargoes (rare) are what should be worrisome, but late embargoes have been held by plenty of solid games.

Perhaps movies are different since prescreening seems to be more of a universal thing than sending out review copies.

It's true that there's plenty of games with late embargos that ended up doing well and games with embargos that dropped well before the release date and ended up being terrible. But the general perception is that the later the embargo ends up dropping the less faith the publishers have in the product, regardless of if that is actually the case. Most infamously the Emoji movie's embargo also dropped the day before, so that perception is definitely still present in movies as well.

I watched a Jimquisiton (thank god for him) on the subject of embargos where he defended them with some caveats. Most interestingly he pointed out that many smaller publishers have their embargos drop as closely to the release date as possible as part of marketing and to remind people that the thing exists. To build in this it is feasible that the people in charge of when the embargo ends up being lifted knew that the movie would be reviewed favorably and wanted it to be as close to when it actually ends up releasing so it's fresh in the audience's minds when they decide which movie to see this weekend. Given that MLP is not on a lot of people's radar, it's not far-fetched to imagine that people's heads might get turned when they see that the movie reviewed well initially before forgetting about it by the time it's actually released. Of course, all of this is just speculation.

For sourcing, the Jimquisition I was referring to is this one. He's covered embargos related to the gaming industry in later episodes too though, usually in accordance with some big scandal revolving around some big game not sending out copies and turning out to be garbage, so if you're interested in that he's worth checking out.

I hadn't thought of the embargo ending so late so the good reviews can be fresh on the minds of parents going into the weekend. That does make sense, given the relatively small distribution.

Also good to hear more critics liking it. Though this does bring back my old worry of some reviewers focusing more on the brony aspect than the actual movie.

And I agree, Jim Sterling is a good YouTube reviewer. Helps that he's a GAFfer too.

So apparently someone has leaked the movie in full HD out on the internet. I saw it being shared on 4chan but it looks like the mods are going to start nuking any of the threads sharing links to it. Even still the cat is kinda out of the bag and as a warning (especially for those that browse derpi) there are probably going to be some stuff out there.

There's some impressions that people were sharing while it was still up but frankly a huge chunk of the people that browse /mlp/ are jaded assholes that were actively rooting against the movie and wanted it to fail so I don't put much stock in most random driveby 4chan anon's opinions on the movie.

No way there's a leak of the movie.

How the hell would an HD copy leak? I can understand a camprip, even this would be early, but how in the hell does Hasbro/Lionsgate let an HS rip get out there?

They didn't do something stupid like with "The Hitman's Bodyguard" and put it on Netflix in some areas, did they?

edit: Oh man, I didn't know "The Hitman's Bodyguard" was released by Lionsgate. Netflix could very well be the source.

People seem to be more focused on actually getting a hold of the leak and discussing it rather then talking about where it came from. I haven't seen a single person mention where it came from. Given that it appears to be an actual video and not a cam upload that leads me to believe someone got a handle on the files and uploaded it to 4chan since it's harder to be found there. It seems like the mods there are going into overdrive to prevent it spreading though, they've already got a filter in place to prevent people from linking it for the most part. Resourceful people can still probably find it but most of the stuff is getting taken down near instantly.

At any rate, it looks like Derpibooru has already got a plan in place to deal with the new movie stuff: https://derpibooru.org/meta/a-warning-leaked-mlp-movie-spoilers/post/3359533#post_3359533

Yeesh, this year has been cursed for MLP in terms of leaks and early airings.

Probably shouldn't have to tell you guys, but don't post about watching the leaked copy.

EDIT: Looks like ED didn't post about it at all. For now, I'll hide movie images on Derpibooru; thankfully, I only have to wait six days before I plan on watching it.

The junior novelization has already spoiled the movie for me so I don't really have much to worry about. Also apparently Derpi is going to be vetting movie screenshots and requiring people to source which promotional material they've gotten them from so they can't post stuff that hasn't been seen yet.

I suppose the review embargo ending on Thursday really is working out in their favor now. If it was getting good reviews now, then an unscrupulous parent could decide to download a copy to show their kid during the weekday. With the wait, the feeling will be more, "Hmm, what can I distract my kid with while I watch Blade Runner oh wait this pony movie's getting good reviews!" As is, the only ones actively seeking out the movie are bronies, and I get the feeling that the people who watch the leak and decide not to watch it in theaters were never going to pay for it anyway.

Second hand, I'm hearing that even the scrooges at /mlp/ are giving it a 6/10 at the lowest, with a lot of higher reviews, which is a good sign.

Honestly an "unscrupulous parent" is not going to be able to find the illegitimate version. EQD didn't even comment on it and that's the biggest site for the movie so most people that aren't looking at some of the deeper fan sites aren't going to even know it's been leaked. Downloads and uploads of it are being struck down almost immediately even on 4chan and at the moment the only place you can really get it is by torrenting it and I doubt most parents would torrent a kids movie because their kids want to see it, especially since most people have no idea how torrenting even works. All of that being said I do think that having reviews go up the day that it's essentially released (a lot of theaters are doing showings on the 5th) will help keep them fresh in people's minds.

The biggest complaints I'm seeing being cycled around on /mlp/ is that the movie is unoriginal, predictable and bland. As I said before a huge chunk of the board was hoping that the movie would be bad and are emotionally invested in the movie not being good and terms like "unoriginal" and "predictable" can be projected on just about any movie and can be used to describe like 95% of all movies that have ever existed, so those being the biggest complaints that they can throw at it (not to say those are the worst actual critiques that can be levied at the movie, a lot of 4channers just regurgitate what other people said and those were the predetermined insults that stuck before the movie even aired) is a pretty good sign.

There's also some complaining about how
the princesses get captured and don't do much
. Which is to say they're meming about something that's only an issue for a small amount of dedicated fans in an effort to find reasons to hate the movie. I legit saw a "review" that gave the movie a 4/10 and only listed this as their issue with it. Not to say that can't ruin the movie for you but calling the entire movie objectively bad because of it is really silly given that it's an issue only a small group of people passionately care about and that's one small aspect of the movie.

Wow, the movie isn't out in theaters yet but Spotify has the soundtrack for My Little Pony: The Movie: https://open.spotify.com/album/2kUJgoPA2iz9c2jzUr0y1x

All the songs on the soundtrack are officially on YouTube for free, and while I haven't listened to them myself, I hear they're great.
Known to be in the movie:
1. "We Got This Together" - Mane Six (Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity), Apple Family (Granny Smith, Apple Bloom, Big Mac)
2. ”I'm The Friend You Need" - Capper (Taye Diggs)
3. ”Time To Be Awesome" - Captain Celaeno (Zoe Saldana), Rainbow Dash, Celaeno's crew, non-Twilight Mane Six, Spike
4. ”One Small Thing" - Princess Skystar (Kristin Chenoweth), non-Twilight Mane Six
5. ”Open Up Your Eyes" - Tempest Shadow (Emily Blunt)
6. "Rainbow" - Songbird Serenade (Sia) - Link is to the music video, which does contain some footage from the ending.

Guess Sigma didn't link the Spotify though because he's a casual.
One Small Thing is my favorite BTW. Also you can find an unofficial upload of "Off To See The World" uploaded from the album that's already been released here, at least until they nuke it.

It's literally the set up for the conflict of the movie. Storm King needs the four leaders to power his magic stick. Team of writers and a chance to expand the way they tell one of these adventure stories, and they still use the same, lazy set up.
If the books are accurate, they don't even put up a fight. The three of them just get taken out by a single character in a few seconds. Maybe the movie at least lets them put up something of a fight first, but I doubt it. That's a shitty set up.

So maybe the embargo has dropped now? There's a review from a writer for the Washington Post (hosted on the intelligencer, idk I got the link from 4chan) giving it 2.5 out of 4. The actual review is mostly a recap of basic info with little actual opinions in there so it's hard to tell what caused her to give it that rating. For the most part it's pretty positive although she mentions a couple times that it gets a little too cutesy (maybe not the right word but you get the idea) so I guess that might be what caused her to give it a lower rating? I could't find any other flaws she listed so I don't know. At any rate, you can find it here

Also Equestria Daily put up their review of the movie, and surprise surpirse, the writer says its amazing and that everyone should go and see it. For those that don't know, Equestria Daily (or EQD) is the number 1 MLP fan site by a substantial margin and often acts as an extension of Hasbro's marketing for MLP. (The review itself also recommends people check out the prequel comics for the movie too) They often get exclusive scoops and access to events as well as frequently take down articles that Hasbro doesn't want up. (Almost always these are articles that reveal leaked information that Hasbro doesn't want people to know about yet. I haven't seen any instances of them taking down stuff that's critical of the show) Given their extremely friendly relationship with Hasbro I don't see any situation where they ever would have given a scathing review. Now I'm not saying that the review isn't sincere (I think it likely is) but that is a major thing to consider when reading it. Another thing is that the review is extremely fan-focused and spends a lot of time talking about fan-favorite characters from the show and their role in the movie. All of that being said, you can find it here

The grade scale at the end mentions that 3 stars is very good, while 2 is OK, meaning 2.5 is probably "pretty good if you're in the right mood", which seems about right, along with the statement that it's sugary without being sticky.

There are a couple mistakes, such as failing to mention that Twilight has wings and claiming there are 13 songs, likely referring to the soundtrack and not the main movie.

The review mentions that the movie is a bit too long, a sentiment I have seen in multiple reactions. That's a bit unexpected, given how everyone was worried it would be too condensed.

Also, the note at the end, "End advance fri oct. 6" makes me wonder if this was accidentally published early.

I almost forgot

and Rarity, like Twilight Sparkle, is a unicorn.

Nvm the review is trash.

In all seriousness my takeaway is that the the reviewer probably didn't really like the feel all that much of the movie, which is understandable since MLP's style is definitely not for everyone. Length is a weird complaint though since 99 minutes is only a couple minutes above average for an animated movie. My sort of optimistic interpretation is that the movie was well-made but wasn't quite her style so she didn't get all that invested.

If the embargo hasn't dropped yet then why is EQD uploading their review too though? Maybe EQD had a different embargo date then the film critic reviews?

Planning to see this Saturday with my daughters. Hopefully it's good!

I'm seeing it tomorrow evening. We've heard that kids are loving the movie and that reviews are looking promising although the actual embargo is apparently dropping tomorrow. We're certainly hoping it's good too.

EQD review comment:

I have no doubt it will be a success. The big three elements (music, main cast and animation) seem to be there from what I have seen. That's the core of this series. That's where the bulk of the charm lies. Don't be surprised if we see the movie breaking 'Titanic' or 'Avatar' level of records at the box office.

I like your optimism, guy.

Saw it just now :) I try to be spoiler-free!

A fun little movie! The animations were top-notch for the most part, the intro part especially looked awesome. I do have some nitpicks though, the story itself was kinda predictable and, dare I say it, boring for a good time, the songs were, for the most part and with one big exception, not the best of the series.

Most of the really good jokes were in the trailers, sadly, but there were some really fun moments and cameos to be had still. Due to the nature of the preview, the cinema was stocked with a bunch of "bronies" (god I hate this word), and while some fit the cliché really well - one guy in my front row apparently never heard of the word "deodorant" - we had a nice crowd who actually cheered on a few scenes. This hardly happens in Germany, so there's that. Also, a lot of costumes going on, and WAY more people than I thought brought their plushies. Yes, plushies.

Anyhow, for the majority of the movie it was a lot like watching not an epic movie, but an above-average episode of season one (or a mashup of various episodes, due to the episodic nature of the movie). Some action scenes were fantastic, some fell flat, some jokes were really good, but a lot of the smaller ones were exact rehashes of season one one-liners, which was kinda meh. I don't know why, but it also feels like some of the Mane6 kinda got the short stick - Pinkie and Twilight were all over the place, while Rarity and AJ had barely any scenes of importance. Fluttershy had like, 5 lines or something (but among those were at least some pretty good scenes).

The storm king was an alright villain, but you could easily recognize a big dash of Discord in most of his lines. He didn't seem very menacing, but quite silly, and while a lot of his jokes landed really well, he might be a bit too silly for some. I liked him. The side characters introduced in the movie ranged from great (pirates) to meh (sea ponies) to "what is this cat guy doing in a pony movie". The pirate scenes alltogether were pretty great and I'd love them to return in the series. Couldn't care less about the sea ponies tho.

But sweet Celestia, one single character made up for all of this.

Tempest is such a fantastic villain. My god. Her animations were amazing, her voice-work was among the best I've ever seen. She oozed charisma (and menace) in every single scene. Her song was fucking amazing, expect a TON of remixes for this, and she was easily, easily the best character of this whole movie. She was absolutely incredible and the movie's worth it just to see that performance. I was smiling like an idiot every time she was on screen. From the moment she first appeared to her last, she owned the movie.

Also we got a poster (with the subpar german cast, sadly, which kinda ruins it).

Have fun, PonyGAF, despite me sounding kinda negative, the movie was really good and I had a fun time. It took quite some time to finally see the real thing on the big screen, and I don't think this movie will disappoint.

EDIT: Glad you enjoyed it! Sucks that you had a stinky guy in the audience, but good that most everyone else was fine. This was an English airing, right?

Is that over weekend?

I'm watching the movie on Sunday, so after most of you guys.

The movie even approaching Blade Runner's sales would be good for me, enough to maybe get some new blood in the season OT but not enough that I'll actually have people at work bring it up.

Yes, english airing, day before release I think, and 8pm. So yeah, that wasn't a kids' screening :D

I do think that the pieces are there for this movie to hit it big. If this movie was made by a more recognizable studio, had good marketing behind it, and didn't have the stigma of it being based on 80s toys aimed at 8-10 year old girls I think it could be one of the more successful animated movies. The movie as it stands is a bit of a dark horse (pun partially intended) but if the movie reviews well and audiences love it I could see it making a good chunk of money across its lifespan and set itself up to be a very lucrative movie franchise down the road. MLP as a series I feel lends itself extremely well to being expanded into full-length movies. And make no mistake, if this movie does remotely well there WILL be sequels. As it currently stands outside of the show's fans no one has any clue who DHX is and MLP isn't really a mainstream brand yet. This movie could put them on the map and could open up the sequels to do even better.

That being said lol at this doing Avatar numbers.

Looking at the article has quite a few interesting tidbits. I'll just quote them verbatim since I think it's very interesting:

Pros
My Little Pony (Lionsgate) is the latest nostalgia-driven animated pic to aim for young crowds, particularly girls and their parental generation that grew up on the property. Presales are significantly higher than expected in recent weeks, and Twitter activity has been stronger than Jem & the Holograms. Facebook growth is markedly ahead of that film, Leap!, and Ratchet & Clank. Columbus Day on Monday and Fall Break in some areas of the country should additionally help attendance with Sunday not being a school night for many young viewers. Also, Bronies.

Cons
After a number of under-performing animated films since late July, expectations have been reasonably conservative up until now for My Little Pony — especially since it hails from distributor Lionsgate, whose recent family-oriented and animated credits include the modest-to-underwhelming runs of Rock Dog, Middle School, The Wild Life, and Norm of the North. Presales could also be slightly misleading given the fan-driven nature of the property.

This sort of confirms my suspicion that their initial estimates were so low because of Lionsgate's history as an animated movie publisher. 12M is still very much on the low side for animated premiers but they do mention that the buzz for the movie on social media is much higher then expected. On the other hand, as they mention the fact that the people that like the show are so passionate about it means that they might be over-representing the movie in those metrics.

Thanks for your opinions. Glad to hear that despite all the issues you still liked it. It's probably the most detailed "negative" review so far because a lot of the negative ones I've seen so far either come off as fan whining or are very light on details.

Interesting that you didn't care for Capper as I heard from a lot of people that he stole the show for them. It's inevitable that some of the Mane 6 are going to get left out in stories like this though so it doesn't really surprise me at all that it's the case here. Most everything sounds unsurprising and likely won't be a deal breaker for anyone.

Another professional review has been dropped.

The Movie" zigs where others zag, throwing it back to the old school with its traditional animation and musical structure. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who already love it, it'll be just right.

At this point I'm going to start trimming my reviews/impressions post I did back on the first page. My thoughts are to either move most of the stuff onto a separate section called "impressions" while the professional publications will be listed under "reviews" or just remove them altogether.

Good to see confirmation that box office estimates were conservative due to Lionsgate's previous films, and that there's a lot more buzz.

About Capper, I expect it's just another case of different characters appealing to different people. Like those people who think Applejack is a good character. Nah, I kid, she's a good side character.

Another professional review has been dropped.

Uh... what?

My impressions would sound more positive if I wouldn't care for spoilers, a bunch of really good (and one really bad) scenes I'd comment on are really big spoilers :D

None of my criticism should be a deal breaker, it's still a very good movie and a lot of fun.

Is the really bad scene the one where
Twilight gets mad at Pinkie?
I heard something like that happens and that it was weird.

Yup, exactly that. Completely out of character for everyone involved, at least to me.

My friends and I are seeing it this weekend. I'm looking forward to what I expect to be the best movie based on a Hasbro property to ever see a theatrical release.

Yes, I think this will be better than the 80's Transformers movie.

Reversed? Maybe?

Looking through her other reviews most of them the stars match up with what she was generally saying but there's definitely a couple weird outliers. Her Dark Tower review is similarly fairly negative and also gets 2 stars. Given how the review is a lot less specific then many of her other reviews I'm guessing that she wasn't particularly gripped by it and wanted to point out that there's an audience out there that would probably like it. How that equates to 1.5 stars I don't know maybe that was just her personal enjoyment rather then trying to make an objective rating based on how good she actually thinks it is.

I mean aside from 80's Transformers and arguably the first Bayformers movie there's not really any competition. Something tells me it'll be better then 'Jem and the Holograms'

So I find out that this girl exists 2 days ago and then today this gets released. Jenny Nicholson has a channel on youtube that usually talks about Star Wars, Disney stuff, and superhero movies (she's really funny and very insightful. I would strongly recommend her) but way back in the day I believe she used to be the voice actor for Twilight in Friendship is Witchcraft. She still has a couple demo reels of her singing some of the songs if you go far back enough. The video itself is just her being excited and she doesn't really talk about the movie all that much (unsurprising since it's largely just an advert for the movie) but says it was "so good" so I guess she really liked it.

So I don't have much interest in MLP, but I kinda hope they keep making movies, if only for more random celebrity pony cameos.

If only so that we will one day have a John Cena pony

Well there is Starlight's new friend...

By the way, guest stars that have appeared on the show:
John DeLancie (promoted to regular)
Weird Al (whose character makes a nonspeaking cameo in the movie)
Lena Hall
Patton Oswalt
Felicia Day
William Shatner

Probably the most well-written review so far from swfweekly. This person definitely knows what they're talking about:

an act of generosity by Rarity gets them out of a jam while Rainbow Dash’s mindless showing off gets them into deeper trouble, something that stands to reason considering Rarity is the best and Rainbow is the worst.

It's definitely written by someone that's well-versed with the show but it's still a fairly professional review.

So serious question: should I remove all of the fan impressions in the 2nd post I made or should I move them to a separate section?

Keep them.

I'll read the review later, but he has the right idea.
