Narrative of PS5 Exclusivity Hurting Games Countered by New Report

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
What a terrible article.

Using one anecdotal example that sold ~30% more than it would have, in just one region, by being on another platform and one year and a half late port. Meanwhile companies that do market research and actually put out games like Sega, Square (and even Sony and XGS to some extent) are opting to be multi-platform as it is a more successful strategy.

Oh wait, no success seen so far. I guess you're right.

Yes, others have purchased studios. Feel free to make the thread on it. I was commenting on the thread and my opinion on why Sony money hats so many games.

Literally in a response to my post you previously quoted. Brushing off increased sales on PC as just deep discounts and consoles are where the real money is.
You seem to be getting in your feelings about this.

Some of PC gaming's greatest strengths over consoles are backwards compatibility, mods and Steam sales.

Are we going to pretend that when we log in to Steam we don't go to Special Offers and check our Wishlist?

I do it everyday. Lol.

I don't understand, what's the point they're trying to prove? Would it sell more on PS5 if this was also on xbox? Or the game would sell considerably more if it wasn't console exclusive? The latter is obvious (you add one platform) but even for a multiplatform games sales on PS5 are dominant.

There is almost no benefit for exclusivity. If you’re a consumer, it’s better for you for games to be multi-platform. It gives you choice.

It’s also better for businesses as it gives them access to a bigger market.

And with development tools and hardware pretty much standardized, it’s easier to port than it ever was.

Exclusivity is stupid all around. Just let everyone enjoy good games.
There is zero benefit to Multiplatform games as a consumer. Multiplatform games means devs have to spend more time making the same game for multiple platforms, which leads to an overall less polished product, which leads to a worse experience for gamers.

Exclusives are typically of better quality, score higher on average, and act as system sellers.

If a game is only on Xbox, then I don’t need a million ways/options to play it somewhere else.

If BMW makes a custom ______ .. I don’t expect that shit to work in a Mercedes, nor would I even want it to

If the exclusives hurt them then these publishers wouldn't accept them 🤣.

Yes Square are upset, but anyone whose kept up with gaming since 2010 knows that square and their projections are laughable.

The truth is that all projects are different, have different expectations and targets. At the end of the day all Sony/ms/Nintendo do is say "here's money, only release with us" and if the publisher is confident on many sales on multiple platforms they'll refuse, much like you have seen with Black desert recently or whatever that game is called.

A game being exclusive not selling well probably means it was never gonna sell well if it was multiplatform anyway, putting concord on Xbox wouldn't have saved it (yes its a first party studio, the point is a bad game is bad, doesn't matter which box it is on)

And if all of those Capcom games were console exclusive, then Capcom would be missing out on that 50% yearly income.

Even if the revenue split between a new game released favours console, that doesn't mean a developer or publisher should abandon PC for console exclusivity.

What kind of backwards strategy is that?

In your very select example of a sliver of the market (Silent Hill 2 remake sales in Europe excluding the UK), Silent Hill 2 still sold 22% on PC. What benefit would come from exclusivity there? 22% less sales?
A big money bag from Sony. And the game would eventually come to PC, where they'd partially recoup those missed initial sales. It's not as if publishers are doing exclusivity to help out Sony

It's in Playstation's near term interest to make sure they have a decent cadence of 3rd party partnerships/exclusives, at least until Xbox consoles declines to complete irrevelancy. It's worth it for them to throw a bunch of money to support lulls in their first party output

I’m not getting feelings into this, I’m just refuting poor arguments as I see them.

Yes, those are indeed the strength of Steam, except for the Steam sales part. Check any modern AAA or AA game on Steam and you will see similar discounts on consoles all the time. PSN has mega monthly sales for thousands of games for a while now.

I also do indeed look for sales on Steam, I happen to do it on PS5 as well as the monthly sales generally have a few seriously cheap games worth picking up.

Most auto parts are mass produced by common suppliers. That’s why something like a Takata airbag recall affects multiple OEMs.

Look at how Proton works for Steam Deck. This isn’t the 90’s… porting is more straightforward. A PS5 just uses a trimmed down custom version of PC hardware after all.

On the flip side, some games wouldn’t be viable if they weren’t multi-platform. Capcom for example designs everything in its business strategy for multi-platform. The RE engine is excellent is designed with the sole purpose of being easy to port.

Sure, but older titles on Steam will be waaaaay better deals.

For example.

- I bought every Fallout game ever made for around $11.

- I bought Dishonoured 1/2 and Prey for around $13.

There is nothing comparable to those kind of sales on console.

But it's not in the publishers best interest to get that money bag if it means excluding PC. The biggest 3rd party proponent of that strategy was Square Enix. Who now believes making their games even timed exclusive to Playstation is hurting their bottom line. Whether they are right or not, only time will tell...

But yes, obviously money hats and exclusivity helps Playstation. But this thread isn't about how exclusivity helps a console manufacturer, this thread is trying to say that PC sales are so negligible that it wouldn't hurt the game to solely release on Playstation.

Clear

CliffyB's Cock Holster
Square Enix would beg to differ.

SE are a pretty terrible publisher all around. As evidenced by their track-record of underachievement.

Get the most influential breakout hit they've had in years in Nier Automata, and they follow it up with ... what? A mobile game, and a cheaply mounted remaster of the first game!

Oh and that launched as a PS console exclusive too, and strangely that didn't seem to hurt sales on other platforms one bit!

Only Square (who’s notorious for claiming things underperformed - exclusive or otherwise) has said this in any real capacity. When more pubs start to chime in, then that conversation can gain traction.

Outside of feelings (because Sony’s franchises are much bigger), what lead you to this conclusion?
Taylor Swift might be bigger than Queen but that doesn't mean she is better. The reason is variety and unique offerings. Anything Sony does well others can already do better. What Sega does Sony don't.

That is business strategy, it is not impose on developers, if they don't want exclusivity, then don't accept the contract. Those complaining about Sony exclusive are just those bitter on the losing side.

And also badly manage companies, are those bitter and who are complaining.

Cool, opinions exist. One thing’s for sure - Sony made better business decisions with their properties and that’s partially why their hardware still exists and tops charts. And I say that with all due respect to a company I would have preferred in the race over Xbox.

I think it depends on the game. Final Fantasy is obviously a big franchise across all platforms and would sell decently wherever it Launched. So yes, it makes tons of sense for it to be on all platforms. I don't think Square Enix would have ever done an exclusivity deal with Playstation if Sony didn't help fund the FF7 Remake series

But with smaller AAA games, like Stellar Blade or Nioh, I can see it making a ton of sense for these studios to partner up with Sony. Where they get help with funding and most importantly Sony marketing

Fair. But it's impossible to say whether the value of partnering up with Sony outweighs the value that would have come with a day 1 PC release.

What this thread is trying to say, is that 28% more copies sold is negligible. Which is ridiculous.

You sure about that? Fallout obviously not as the majority of the games are not on console, but the Prey + Dishonoured 1/2 combo was recently $15 on PSN.

How about why the best games to play on a PS5 are PS4 games or how awful controller build quality has been since DualShock 3?

full

More irrelevant opinions to start. Now tell me, how does any of that support you narrative about SEGA’s games?

I think the PS console exclusivity deals sell more than multiplats. PC and PS5 is the majority of sales anyway, you get a bag for the deal, you get free marketing and a spot on a showcase of some sort, and PS players are more enticed to buy it cause it seems more special.
Then you don't have to spend the money to develop for xbox x/s or switch.

I bet for the small amount you'd sell on xbox and nintendo for most games, you'd see a loss in sales on the PS side from it not seen as a special console exclusive game.

Lets be real. You don't want to talk Sega. You want to praise Sony.
Why are we discussing SEGA in a thread……………. about PlayStation?

Go make a thread about them and their games if that’s what you want to talk about.

True, we will just have to see if future studios will continue to partner up with Sony. I believe they will, mostly because studios are doing it now with a PS5 install base around 60mil. In a few years, it will be over 100mil

But, It is possible with Xbox slowly exiting the console market as a reason why Sony won't feel the need to keep doing these exclusivity deals

There's been over half a billion third party games sold on Switch, that's worth developing for no?

Why are discussing SEGA in a thread that has nothing to do with them? Go make a thread about them and their games then. Who’s stopping you?
They were brought up by a drive-by shit post. Then you decided to gloat about Sony when the reply didn't suit your preferred narrative. As for threads, they are aplenty already. I participate when something strikes my fancy.

Well I meant games that typically can't run on switch. Most of these big console exclusive games probably couldn't be on switch to begin with.

Gloat about Sony? 😂

I asked you questions that you still haven’t answered. You did a dive into a pointless Taylor Swift analogy (which ironically supported my point), posted a beatin meat gif (which is all you’ve done for SEGA), and little else.

So, this thread piqued your interest, right? Why?

Full exclusivity probably does have a negative impact and I see no reason to leave out PC. Xbox is left out for obvious reasons and barely has an impact either way. Ultimately its the publishers choice as they agree to the offer being made. They must see a benefit to it if they are accepting. Remember they have the data for all the platforms and know where their games sell.
