The fact that it's a 3 year deal makes it a tradable asset. He's still a top 10 point guard, which happens to be the leagues best position. Signing him to a contract and trading him later is better than losing him for nothing.

With the young players the Raptors already have, they should be able to trade Derozan and Lowry at some point and get more young pieces and picks and have a relatively smooth transition from this core to the next.
