LOS ANGELES -- Rudy Tomjanovich, who guided the Houston Rockets to NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, agreed Friday to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We expect that he'll sign a contract and we'll hold a press conference tomorrow to announce it," team spokesman John Black said.

In a move expected for the last five days, Tomjanovich succeeds Phil Jackson, who coached the Lakers to three titles in five years. The team announced June 18, three days after losing to the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals, that Jackson wouldn't return next season.

The 55-year-old Tomjanovich coached the Rockets for 12 years before stepping down in May 2003 -- two months after being diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Reportedly in good health now, he worked as a scout with the Rockets last season -- his 34th year with the organization he joined in 1970 as the second overall selection in the NBA draft.

When PTI mentioned this, they also said something about Tomjanovich convincing Fisher to stay with the Lakers.

hey, all you Houstoners, how reliable is THIS guy's reporting? Cause he makes it sound like Kobe resigning/Shaq traded to Heat is a done deal.

Piston:

I don't follow that guy...the only two guys worth a damn in the Chronicle are Richard Justice (MLB) and Johnathan Feigan (NBA)

Every one else's articles I'd take with a grain of salt. Never listen to John McClain (NFL) though, his articles are like reading a bunch of Federman threads.

Whoa. What's the proposed deal?

Odom, Grant and......?

espn says Odom, Grant and EITHER Caron Butler or a 1st round pic, but Odom, Grant and a First Rounder doesn't seem to work under the cap, so i think Butler is gonna have to be a part of the deal.

Jim Gray...well, there's a credible source right there!

Haha. I'll wait til D.A. reports it.

Well Gray is firmly implanted up Kobe's ass, so if the Houston Chronicle scenario is true (Kobe assured Mitch he'd resign tonight after Mitch assured him Shaq was being dealt to Miami), he'd probably be the first to know.

In other news, the Spurs will resign Gino to a six year deal for $50-55 million, and will land Brent Barry in a four year, $22-24 million deal. Brent is a great pickup...he's one of two players that's averaged 40% shooting or better behind the three point line the last five years (including 45% this past season), with the other being Steve Nash. Heh, sure could've used him in the playoffs.

Well Shinobi ain't one. Shin.....Who does Barry replace? I love the guy, but is he their 2 guard now? That man has to be their #1!edit: They're no. 1 choice, not their PG

He's gonna be part of a three guard rotation, along with Parker and Ginobili. I could see them starting Gino at small forward, while Bowen (who's close to being resigned at a lesser sum of money) comes off the bench.

Oh yeah, I live in Toronto...the Spurs were my favourite team before the Raps were born though (thanks to D-Rob, then cemented with Duncan), so those are my co-favourite squads.

It was weird watching Gino come off the bench last year. It didn't feel right.. I admit that I don't know everything about the Spurs that there is to know, but he deserves to start...and so does my boy Barry :D I hope Bowen is the odd man out.

Seriously, it's fucking sad what's happening up there. Every year in the free agent bonanza, the Sonics stand idle and watch all the good players sign with other teams. They don't even attempt to go after competent big men, instead wasting their money on fucking scrubs. God, I wish they had the foresight to throw Boozer some fucking $$$. Now, they're contemplating trading Ray Allen because he'll most likely jet after this upcoming season.

Eat shit and die, Wally Walker.

At least I'll get to see Brent Barry in action with the Spurs. He deserves to be on a winning team -- guy is nothing but standup. Great shooter, good rebounder, able defender, always shows up for work, and a slam dunk champion!

Boozer would have been nice... don't see why he wouldn't come to the Sups.. I am just glad that they didn't throw a bucket of money at another 7 foot stiff... because he is..7 feet tall OMG call the presses!!! (I know they drafted one... but at least he isn't locked into a 6 year 60 million dollar deal!)

Oh and btw good things James used his option to stay... yay! :(

Jerome James is worthless. Blackace, I'm curious, are Sonics management vilified up there in Seattle by the media? Are the fans upset?

When I lived there people were pretty upset... and it was easy to get tickets to the game if you wanted to go... Last year was the worst it has been in awhile and I moved to Japan right at the start of the season...so I am not sure how they feel now... however I am sure if anyone like me, who was born and raised in Seattle, has to be pissed that there NO light at the end of the tunnel

He knows nothing about Gundy Ball + Lazy Eye Fun!

Has Gundy Ball ever won anything? I don't think Gundy knows how to run an offense and I think if they don't get T-Mac his 25+ (which is very hard to do with Gundy Ball because they hold the ball for 24 seconds every possession and only get 40 shots per game) then T-Mac might get mad enough to set his Lazy Eye straight.

WTF is wrong with miami...they take a speedboat of a team on the rise and attach a 500 pound , greedy, self-absorbed anchor.

the lakers just raped the heat if this deal is really done.

Are the Heat going to give him an extension? Why would the Lakers or Heat do this? The Lakers should have waited until Kobe resigned before they moved Shaq, otherwise they risked being BamBoozered. The Heat were a team on the rise and they just threw all that hard work away on a guy who is overrated and way past his prime. I really thought Shaq would prove everyone wrong this past season by dominating the way he used to, but I think he is just unable to do that anymore, injuries have caught up with him and pretty soon he will be fucking over the Raptors Hakeem style.

miami is close enough so its not like he will leave to go to orlando. leave to go somewhere else maybe but if i had a chance to go miami or orlando i too would chose miami.

this could really help miami. odom and butler were young but grant werent and while they had a great up and coming team who could have contended next season...this almost gurantees them to be a contender next season, especially in the weak east.

odom, grant, and butler are all good players but i dont see the lakers competing at the top 5 in the west next season.

Not really. If you can't win with Shaq, Kobe, and nobody else, what makes you think you can win with Shaq, Wade, and nobody else?

The only real question for LA is whether or not Odom is going to start hitting the bong as soon as he touches down in LA, or if he'll wait until midseason or so. If he plays like he did for Miami last season, he'll be a big help for Team Kobe, but if he relapses into the Clip-era Odom, it'll be bad news.

Ever heard of Eddie Jones? His game will greatly benefit with Shaq's arrival.

except for the shaq isnt playing with someone who he really dislikes and egos of payton and malone. im not saying miami is going to win the championship but it puts them up there especially in the east. yea detroit and indiana are dominant but after them its a throw up.
