I think part of the reason that the midrange game is gone is due to coaches as well. Coaches emphasize players to take it to the basket, which often is a higher percentage shot than shooting jumpers, and plus it increases the probability of getting a player to the basket and having a defender getting fouled out. Guys that shoot jumpers all day are usually called 'soft.'

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
I'd like to point out that most of mine and Dm's posts came during that intense couple of weeks leading up to the arrival of Houston's new God aka T-mac.

You don't say, man it seemed like everyone in the damn thread was from Houston during that stretch ;)

I don't think that is all that true. Mid range jumpers have never really been considered soft. Turn around jumpers, baseline jumpers, off the dribble jumpers are all mostly mid range... I think the players that coaches consider soft are the ones that just float around outside the arc and wait for a player to drive and kick it to them... and that is their entire game...

The bottom line is players are not taking the time to learn the basic skills of basketball anymore...

As far as midrange shooting goes, Pierce has a devestating dribble, stop and drop shot. I seem to be the only one on the board that likes his game though.

2-3 years ago, he was insane, and I felt he was really going to blow up in the future. But he seems to have stagnated or even regressed in many areas from what I've seen; I'll admit that I don't see him play much, however, so I could be mistaken. Have his numbers dropped off at all from 2 years ago until this past season?

Bionic, I rarely see Kobe face-up his man, take one quick dribble to either side and pop the J. Now, if he gets the ball already AT midrange and faces up, and then just rises up and shoots it, yeah, he has a good % on those types of shots (and it is a midrange J, technically). But I was more talking about a pull-up J, something which I feel few players have, even though you say he does it 10 times each game-- I dunno, I must've missed it. I do feel that he has the most complete offensive game in the league, however-- from 3-pointers, to drives, to post-ups (where he needs some work), to drawing contact on pump-fakes. He does all this very well. He doesn't move without the ball very well, though, nor utilize the pick&roll as well as he should given his athleticism and creativity. He needs to start developing those sorts of skills now so that when his athleticism diminishes as he ages, he'll still be great.

Loki, your observation about Pierce is spot on. I think part of it was that last year he stopped caring once Ainge took apart the team. But I also think that team defenses in the NBA have really improved over the past two seasons (finally fulling utilizing the zone), especially in their ability to take out premier perimeter scorers. All the star SG had off seasons last year, and I don't think that's a coincedence. With Pierce it is even worse because he is not quite athletic enough to blow by defenders before help can come.

Another point that Bat highlighted some months ago is that Pierce missed Walker a ton. I'm still not a Walker fan (though I give him a lot of credit for appearing in great shape this past season), but he's still an offensive threat both inside and outside, and as a result made it more difficult for teams to crowd around Pierce. With him gone, Pierce had Ricky Davis and little else, which mean teams could just overpower him with D.

Another point I agree with is how all the shooting guards last year seemed to take a step back. In 2003 you had a lot of players that scored 24 points or more. This year I think we only had four or five. Teams I think finally figured out how to use partial zones, like having one guy standing on the outside of the lane as a second defender for a guard who's looking to drive from the wing. So you either need a lot of size (particularly in the front court), two or more primetime players, or one or two great outside shooters in order to overcome it.

LOS ANGELES -- The Big Guy had a big-hearted message for his Los Angeles fans Sunday.

Shaquille O'Neal took out a full-page advertisement in the Los Angeles Times to thank his fans for their support during his eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal signed last week with the Miami Heat, marking the end of an era during which the Lakers won three NBA championships.

"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support over the last eight years," O'Neal said in the ad, which included a picture of him smiling and gripping a basketball in one hand. "I am moving on to the next chapter in my career, but I will never forget the support that you gave me."

O'Neal, whose dispute with Lakers management led to his departure, told Lakers fans, "I will miss each and every one of you."

"You have been there with me through it all -- we never could have won any of the championships without you," he said.

The Lakers are rebuilding their team around superstar guard Kobe Bryant, who signed a seven-year contract worth more than $136 million. Rudy Tomjanovich will replace Phil Jackson as coach, and former Laker Vlade Divac, who was traded in1996, will return to replace O'Neal at center.

I have gain respect for Shaq after all this ordeal. I know he is also after the money, but at least he conducted himself like a true pro. My thoughts about Kobe are exactly the opposite.

After all the cheap shots he's taken at Kobe? Laughable, dude has been anything but classy, he's been a complete jackass if u ask me. The ad makes no difference.

Toying? He let the organization know that he would opt out and be a free agent for almost a year. How about Shaq toying with the Miami fans about coming to camp in shape and promising a championship. I believe he gave us the same guarantees after they got their asses handed to them by the Spurs. He came into camp fat and didnt win us squat!

I'm no Kobe lover, but what has Kobe actually done? He didn't say a word the entire time Shaq was popping off, gave credit to Shaq at his conference when he signed his new deal, was there to great his new teammates the next day, like a leader should. I was really pissed at Kobe at first, listening to all the venom the LA Times and local Shaq ass-kisser radio jocks, but the way Kobe has conducted himself actually makes me give him more respect. Shaq has acted like a bitter, money-grabbing ass. But as I've said before, I blame them both for having huge egos, but don't you think the decision is really Bus' after all? I have a had time believing Kobe is playing Bus and Kupchak like puppets. Bus is concerned about the value of his franchise, Shaq is getting older and wanting more money, Bus doesn't trust Shaq will be in shape and without injury. When you look at it from Bus' point of veiw, I can understand why he chose to trade Shaq and go with Kobe.

Well, if you think driving away the team's best player and the coach that led you to three rings, only for personal benefit, is not toying wih an organization, good fo you. Enjoy the Kobe Lakers.

And now you guys are going to tell me, you believed all the bullshit Kobe spewed in his press conference? Scary.

That's the LA Times and Joe McDonald talking. The decision was Bus', always has been. He had an offer on the table to Shaq, which Shaq refused because he wanted more.

Edit: Are you believing all the BS the LA Times, noted Shaq Ass-Kissers, spew?

Sorry but your wrong. Shaq drove himself out by refusing to take a slightly different role. His constant critisim/attacks about Buss/Kupchak didnt help his situation at all. Then of course was his gigantic contract extension he was crying about.

So much fun seeing all the Shaq hate all of a sudden. 2 years ago you guys would be defending him til the end of time. :)

Well im a Laker fan not a Shaq fan so i could care less what he does now that he's not part of the team. I still got love for him because he did bring us 3 Championships. But it makes laugh when people lay all the blame on Kobe over the break-up of the team. I wonder what people would be saying next year had they stayed together and Buss wouldve give Shaq his gigantic extension. With Shaq/Kobe taking up 95% of the salary. What exactly were they gonna get to improve with the 5% left?

I'm speaking about the Local LA media, since they're the ones most familiar with the situation. Most of the local media are SAKs (Shaq Ass Kissers). These guys are afraid to criticise Shaq because they like him, he's funny, they enjoy hanging with him before and after games and don't want to get on his bad side. The national media love Shaq too, he's a great guy. What do we really have to go by, though? What Shaq says, what Kobe says (and what he didn't say while this whole drama played out), and what the orginization says.

Edit: If we go by what the media says, of course it's all Kobe's fault, but if you look at both sides, like some of what I've said, the blame can be spread all around.

Armed with the best inside-out combo in the league (Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming), Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has stunned doctors, who report that the shiny-pated coach has been regrowing hair. McGrady's versatility and outside scoring have balanced Yao's increasing effectiveness on the inside. That has the young Houston squad on a 55-win pace and apparently has allowed Van Gundy to relax for the first time in his professional life.

Doctors say the reduced stress on Van Gundy led to the follicular miracle. As for the coach, he is excited about hairstyle prospects and even says he is considering "a Billy Ray Cyrus thing."

:)

Lakers forward Lamar Odom was stunned into a turnover last week when a season-first took place during a victory in Los Angeles. Odom started the Lakers' offense by passing to Kobe Bryant at the top of the key and, to Odom's shock, Bryant passed the ball back. Unsure of what had just happened, Odom held the ball, staring at it until the 24-second clock elapsed. "I did not know what to do," Odom said. "There's nothing in our playbook that covers him passing it back."

LMAO!

Need to bring back a classic

Have any notorius potheads gone on to dominate in the NBA for more then a couple years? T-Mac is gonna have to lay off on the reefer if he wants to win that ring. The only thing more dangerous to NBA players is fat white hotel employees.

And in some real NBA news... Seattle just made a move!!!

Booth for Fortson

Sending Booth back to the Mavs and bringing the ex Rebounding champ to Seattle. Not overly exciting but it was a move.. also getting rid of one of their 5 centers.... Now only if we can get someone to take Potokojoufaihfkajajhgkhvkhako (sp)

The Rockets could use Potokojoufaihfkajajhgkhvkhako to back up Yao and be used for 6 fouls.....maybe the sonics would want man titty ?

Vitaly? Wow, been a while since I've seen him. He's been hiding up in Janusland?

Oh well, we need a backup center. We obviously need a starting PG, but at least we HAVE a pg. We have no backup 5.

While Kobe claimed to have not been with anyone in Colorado...oooops!! As for Jerry and Mitch, of course they're not going to admit that they capitulatedto the wishes of a free agent with a felony charge over his head...it would make them look pathetic.

Seriously, you don't need any sports writer to tell you what went down in L.A. Buss and Kupchak is just doing damage control since they don't want their franchise guy engulfed in the negative PR. Whether Kobe explicitly said to lose Shaq and Phil is not relevant. It's been implied and management knows they have to pick one over the other; they choose Kobe. It was a power struggle and Kobe came out the victor.

excerpt from Iverson after team USA's practice:

On his own championship prospects at age 29, after eight seasons in the league and with the rebuilding Sixers:

"I definitely feel like it's coming. And I don't want a championship where I'm 35, 40 years old, take a pay cut and go play for the team that everybody in the media is saying is gonna win it. I don't want it that way. I don't want that championship. I want the championship where I'm the leader on the team. I don't have to be the facial figure of the team. I honestly want to play with another All-Star or that type of player, but ... I want it in Philadelphia, simple as that. All the stuff that I've been through, that place turned me from a young man to a grown man, and I'm not talking about all the good things."
