I can personally confirm that it’s everywhere in that culture. I’m not too particular about where I get my free speech from when there’s barely any left, especially before I found new Gaf, even if I have to occasionally rub shoulders with people that disgust me.

As your frustrations go, I completely agree. As I said, I don’t want to downplay anything. I would just hold off on pressing the fire alarm, because the image EL passes on, is that this is quite business as usual.

This didn’t just happen overnight. It’s been happening, and we’ve been just fine, for long before I was even posting here too. A compromise was made on Clown World, and that seems to have generated no end of controversy, but it was specifically made as an acceptable sacrifice, so those big battles could be tackled.

I don’t want to downplay that either. There needs to be all kinds of perspectives and opinions on this, but Clown being removed from a title is a very small sacrifice for a very big gain (so advertisers and hosts don’t think we’re literally Hitler), imo.

If we get down the road and words are regularly disappearing from Gaf, I’ll hit that alarm button with you.

This story perfectly highlights why crazy people should be stopped before it's too late instead of them running free. They can be in positions in power in the least unsuspected places and if it's up to them, they'll gladly enforce their twisted views unethically through questionable or illegal methods. Protecting the weak is not the same as abusing power while using 'protecting the weak' as the excuse, which in itself is ironic.

I only read the one post where he was banned. If he meant it as black people = chimps then, its hard to argue against it. If it was less literal and just a stupid usage of a turn of phrase then permanent is too harsh.

If he is banned for being a racist, I would edit the post to say something along the lines of "post edited as it makes the community look bad" or something.

It's easy to tag us all as racists because we have more freedom than any other forum on the Internet, we don't need evidence to make us all look complicit in racism. Hopefully that makes sense.

Fair enough. Honestly I think it is the freest forum on the Internet. The other few places that I visit are polarised politically. Where here at Gaf all sorts of nutters, eccentrics and garden variety mental patients mix with normies, political activists, religious peeps, atheists, fatties, fitties....

Apart from socially unacceptable posts calling for people to be killed, almost everything is allowed to be posted here.

I mean look at this for an example. We're discussing how You, the owner, run Your forum. Any other place on the net the owner would have nuked my account. And yet here we are. Smells like freedom to me.

It's not the freest, because hopefully this place will have some standards. That's what the rules in place enforce from what I've seen. When you look at the moderation on gaming side it becomes clear. You're free to talk about what you want, and they're trying to let you do that. But sometimes enforcement needs to be used to make sure the best possible quality content gets created. If you're just posting garbage and dragging down threads, that's not helping anything.

You might be on to something here... in that people care about things happening around the world but with a hierarchy sorted by proximity.

And hey maybe if Palestines built shelters to defend their people like the Israelis did instead of digging tunnels to funnel suicide bombers into them they might not be losing as many of their people. Israel sucks at global PR but they're better at war and it's hard to knock them for the latter.
