NeoGAF Games of the Year 2014 Awards

The 3DS Top 5 exclusives has Smash 3DS #1, then Bravely Default, Persona Q, Pokemon ORAS and Theatrhythm Curtain Call.

I assume most of the points for Ubi come from their two top 20 games (South Park and Far Cry 4) + Valiant Hearts (31st) and Child of Light (38th).

GAF ended up putting my top 10 1st, 36th, 39th, 24th, 6th, 10th, 55th, 47th and 2nd. Pretty fair go overall.

And the following are incredibly cool people:

This is the only list I have agreed with this year. GG GAF. Good job Nintendo. Anyone who doesn't have a Wii U stop worrying about how weak the system is, whether they are going to drop the gamepad or whatever other nonsense you can cook up and get yourself one. While I probably played more PC games this year I spent a lot of time on my Wii U and had the most fun there.

Great work, timetokill and Cheesemeister, thanks for your time.

I love seeing Bayonetta 2 on the top, but Tropical Freeze should have been a bit higher :(

I think it's easily the best Nintendo game since Mario Galaxy 2.

Wow my affinity is rather low:

I guess that's what I get for having PC indie, PS Vita, 3ds, ps4, and multi-plat games on my list.

As for the results I did not see that coming. I expected DA: I to be on top but the fact that it's further down the list is nice. Also expected Dark Souls II to be a bit higher but, eh.

Good to see Daganronpa 1 & 2 get recognition in multiple categories too. And Banished, even if it didn't have much competition in the simulation category.

And finally I suppose the reason my affinity is so low is because I was one of a very small number of people who voted for Soul Sacrifice and Endless Legend? Kinda dissappointed that those two games don't really rank, especially Endless Legend when Beyond Earth got some recognition despite it's mediocrity.

You got some good taste my friend

100% Nintendo Exclusive: 2.02952% (22)

Clearly, the 22 Nintendo exclusive votes out of 1084 total votes decided it all.

That said, if a user's list contained only Nintendo or Sony titles, I'm not sure how serious I can take that contribution.

>= 50% Nintendo Exclusive: 21.21771% (230)

When 230 people stack their list with Wii U games of course it's going to skew the results.

Wow I wholeheartedly agree with almost every listing, which is weird because I normally don't at all. The only game I haven't played that topped a list is Dragon Age. I may have placed Zelda ALBW higher, but still

You dun good, Gaf

It seems opposite of reality that Divinity:OS places so low, Shadowrun Dragonfall not at all, and Dragon Age: Inquisition in the top 5?

What have you done GAF?

I had never heard of Divinity:OS until after I voted. Definitely going to check that game out. I think the best thing that can come from GoTY lists is exposure for games that flew under the radar for some people.

My 10 games as GAF regarded them:

57. Legend of Grimrock 2
5. Dark Souls II
14. Divinity: Original Sin
12. Destiny
168. Lords of Xulima
10. Shovel Knight
65. The Talos Principle
306. Shadowgate
59. Might & Magic X - Legacy
27. Forza Horizon 2

It'd be interesting to know the number of distinct games with at least one vote in the full ranking per platform. I think that's the one statistic that might cheer up Durante a bit ;)

I'm curious too about who had the greatest affinity with GAF, that is, whose selection is more like the actual results? That way everyone with a complaint can point out to him and laugh/rage.

That's a great idea and I think we had something like that in previous years. Is that feasible, Cheese? To find the user (with a top 10 list) with the highest affinity for the overall top 10?

Next time someone asks "GAF? who is this GAF person you speak of?" we can finally point to this guy and say "that's him."

Of the Wii U games in the top 10 I only played Tropical Freeze (no interest in the others), but it was pretty damn good.

As you can see, he is clearly marked as such by having to sport an avatar showing the best CRPG ever made.
It's a heavy burden.

There were 119 ballots that did not have any comments picked up by the parser, out of 1084. That's a user failure rate of 10.98%.

I'm guessing there were quite a lot of posts that didn't even get picked up by the parser due to bad formating? Damn.

I'd also like to find out who has the lowest affinity, because I think I'm in the running. Most the people posting their affinity don't go lower than 90 points, while my top is 61.

Nintendo makes more than one console, though.

So does Sony?

I have to formally thank Nintendo as both a developer and publisher for preventing abject failure
(that is, a DA:I top 3 placement)
.

I'm not just whining or dramatizing here either, I'm honestly flabbergasted at how terrible it is. At the very least, I absolutely expected a Dragonfall top 10 RPG (top 5 really) placement. It's not a particularly hardcore or challenging game (unlike Wasteland 2 and M&MX), and should have broad appeal. For it not to show up in the top 10 at all is shocking. I knew that the polling methodology used inherently results in a popularity contest, but I didn't expect it to be that bad.

People invested their WRPG hours in either Inquisition or Original Sin or both. Both of these games are longer than some in the top 10 by four times over. And that's before considering the cross-genre competition (including two Diablos lolwut). Something to keep in mind. You should see how fighting games are treated, nevermind STGs, etc.

Well, based on the results and the affinity data, I believe that I am now required to run to the store and buy South Park: The Stick of Truth. I hope its fun!

Also, this is apparently the first time I've never played the GAF GotY winner at time of voting, based on the other thread. As a fan of Platinum Games (who does not own a Wii U yet), congrats to Kamiya and co.

[..]
I will never get the Platinum love on Gaf despite me being a huge action/hacknslash fan.

Damn, how can people continue to get this wrong when the format is right there in the OP?

Regardless you did good GAF. Here's my affinity aka my soul brothers

Nice list. 2014 was sure a great year for Wii U.

I still have to try Shadows of Mordor and Wolfestein on my PS4.

Hahaha. For what it's worth, Divinity was the best RPG I played this year. But I spent more time and enjoyed Dragon Age: Inquisition more. I can't really explain that. It's just... a personal choice? I have a pretty big MMO background though, so maybe that's why some of the MMO-ish quests didn't bother me that much.

Seems like a good list. They're not all games I would have put there but still it's easy to recognize them all as good games. That publisher award is pretty funny. Nintendo got more points than MS and Sony... combined... multiplied by two.

They released more then ACU this year.

Yup. Valiant Hearts especially was a pretty good game.

So?

My point is that assuming 230 people 'stacked' the results toward the Wii U without backing it up with evidence is a silly claim to make when they make another console that's much more popular.

To preface: I don't frankly care or think there's a conspiracy theory or what not, just putting in my two cents.

Getting that out of the way, I think it's pretty safe to say it's stacked toward the Wii U when there's not a single 3ds game in the top 20. Like, I don't see how that can even be an argument.

We could call it the hipster award. :p

It's funny, because in my particular case, I didn't think my list was at all controversial.

Its sad to not see Forza Horizon 2 in the top 20! T-T
Its my GotY 2014, by far! But I guess the XB1 player base may be the main reason for that, on top of being a racing game.

Have not played any Nintendo game though!

What 3DS game would you expect? Bravely Default had a mixed reception by people who played it through, and I struggle to think of what other releases this year I would expect on here

lol at everyone complaining about the "Wii U bias".

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8
Smash 4
Hyrule Warriors
Captain Toad

The 5 "big" titles that came to the Wii U this year, all exclusive, and all at or near the top of their given genre because of the high quality of the titles themselves. Not about Wii U Bias, Nintendo just had a KILLER year for software, and that's just counting the Wii U platform. Nintendo is among the best developers for a reason. That's not even counting Shovel Knight or anything on the 3DS.

That isn't to say other great games didn't exist this year - of course they did. Just for any single platform, it can be argued the Wii U had the most high quality titles (next to PC, but PC always gets little love). GAF is just giving love where love is due.

Next year should be interesting. Outside of household names like Star Fox and Zelda, not sure if any other nintendo game is going to do well. Will be interesting to see the reception to games like Code Name STEAM and Splatoon.

Bayonetta 2 deserves the top spot, but the over-representation of Nintendo is laughable.

They made lots of solid games across multiple genres so it's not that surprising, though how high ranked most of them are is. Even though I voted for it I did not see MK8 even making top ten.

I don't see anything in my post that says anything about expectation. In fact what you're saying here agrees with my point.

That said, if a user's list contained only Nintendo or Sony titles, I'm not sure how serious I can take that contribution.

Why? It's not unreasonable for somebody to only own a WiiU and if they do there's a good chance they'd only have Nintendo titles on their list.
I suspect there's plenty of people that exclusively played on their PS4 or XB1 but I assume that wouldn't be reflected in the stats due to the larger number of multiplats.
That said I don't see a problem with bias anyway, there's 284 games on the list and there's no way anybody played all of them so there's got to be some inherent bias.

Anyway I'm another with low affinity, my range was 64-57.
However unlike most situations I felt my vote made a difference, putting TxK second certainly propelled it up some of the categories.

Finally as it was mentioned above I'll put a little reminder that Bravely Default was released in Europe last year.

Wow at that list and congrats to the winners. My tastes are so different than the majority of this forum. My only gripe is seeing forza horizon 2 so low on that list. Such a shame more people didn't play it.

Hey, I'm on the front page :D Good work OP, I can't begin to imagine how much data you had to work with.

Nice list. I really was hoping Alien: Isolation would be in the top 10 though.

I guess.
I'm one of the 230 and I don't look at my list as stacking Wii U games (even split with 3DS and Wii U with Vita and PS3 peppered in). I look at it more as the minority of people who own Nintendo systems were graced with a lot of standout games that were exceptionally well received by players and critics alike.

If people are this upset about the results, maybe they should just be happy that the majority of voters did not even have the chance to play these games so their percentages are at least limited by multi-console owners and 22 maniacs.
