Now I'm just waiting for ninjablade to see this thread.

Ghehehehe

I don't participate in GOTY threads because lol popularity contest, but the fact that Bayo 2 even managed to scrape together enough votes surprises me.

I mean, donkey kong at #6 instead of top 3 invalidates the list anyway, but its still nice to see.

There's nothing to "lol" about

Smash and Kart stood on a lot of recycled material we saw 5-6 years ago. Toad was easy, hyrule was another typical musuo game (of which a large number of those games exist). Hardly new or quality stuff there.

The bias is very real

This is almost better than the conspiracy theory in the voting thread

Not surprised to see Gartooth topping my affinity list, was reading his list at the time thinking that the order was damn similar to what mine was going to be, stealing my list and all that!

;)

What are you talking about? Did you see Cheesemeister's post, I'm #9 on overall affinity this year so you copied me! lol

Also shoutouts to some awesome gaffers.

Decent results, though 2014's strategy category is all kinds of fucked up. (Not as bad as the horror category, but still.)

I hope you voted for/played endless legend if you feel the startegy category is lacking...

You're welcome.

I'm not a Nintedo player anymore and I have no interest in a Wii U but I'm not gonna cry about or laugh at the results here. This is the most solid GOTY list/vote process on the web year in and year out. Two Sony exclusives running away with the top spot the previous two years shows that anything can happen.

There were 119 ballots that did not have any comments picked up by the parser, out of 1084. That's a user failure rate of 10.98%.

Geez. C'mon people. Read the OP and get it right. The list has more validity with more voters.

Great job as always, Cheese and timetokill. You guys make this way cooler than it has any right to be.

This is a dark path you're taking.

Good shit on Bayonetta 2 winning. It was by far the best game released last year and deserves every ounce of love it's received. It's going to be one of those games we'll remember for a while and will be replayed for a long time. I couldn't be happier with the game myself, it managed to live up to my expectations entirely.

Also happy to see Gundam Extreme VS Full Boost in the top 5 for PS3 exclusives. Best PS3 game of the year!

HOMIES:

And thanks to timetokill and Cheesemeister for another excellent job.

So happy about these results. Didn't vote (too lazy), but it reflects my favorite games of the year pretty closely. Wii U was the best console of the year, and these results show. Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will always be remembered as one of the best games of all time, IMO.

Would love to see platforms owned by all voters vs. rest of neogaf. Seems like wii u owners voting at a higher rate than others. Nothing wrong with being extremely passionate, just interesting.

Based on average rank, dragon age was second to Bayonetta 2, was available on 5 platforms and probably had > 5x total sales, yet still lost overall.

Though I don't think there's any doubt that Nintendo had the best platform exclusives. This year should be a lot more interesting in that regard.

Congrats for Nintendo and Platinum games. Bayonetta 2 really deserve it and Nintendo killed it last year. I hope 2015 will be a great year for gamers.

Reading through the voting thread I noticed a lot of lists that don't include the top 3 games or no Wii U game and don't include DA:I either. It seems people are quite divided about it. I'm yet to play it, but I'm curious how it will be when I will pick it up.

Edit: also MK8 is the most voted game and appears in a lot of lists as the only Wii U game, but it's usually not on the first 2-3 places. Talking about a very popular game around here.

Pretty satisfied with the list this year, outside of the low placing of Forza Horizon 2. Can't say it's too surprising though.

Out of 147,000 GAF members, how many voted ....

This thread is kind a funny in that so little votes skewed in a predictable manner, and some try to read something meaningful in them.

Did the winner get 100 votes. Meaningful.

Recommended for me: (I really should have played Bayo 2...)

1. [NWU] Bayonetta 2 (Action) = 11 points
2. [NWU][3DS][PC] Shovel Knight (Platform) = 8 points
3. [PC][IOS][AND] Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (Strategy) = 6 points
4. [PSV] Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Adventure) = 6 points
5. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC] Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (Action) = 4 points, 1 honorable mention
6. [PC] Age of Wonders III (Strategy) = 4 points
7. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC] The Evil Within (Horror) = 4 points
8. [PC] Divinity: Original Sin (RPG) = 3 points
9. [PS4] Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (MMO) = 3 points
10. [3DS] Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Rhythm) = 3 points

User Affinity AKA who are you people!

Question, why is there no 3DS exclusive games category?

There should be. See goty-consoles.txt.

3DS Exclusives
1. [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Fighting) = 141 points, 15 honorable mentions
2. [3DS] Bravely Default (RPG) = 135 points, 12 honorable mentions
3. [3DS] Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (RPG) = 128 points, 7 honorable mentions
4. [3DS] Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (RPG) = 99 points, 8 honorable mentions
5. [3DS] Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Rhythm) = 86 points, 7 honorable mentions

I guess I'm wondering why this isn't in the OP.

So crazy. I have played all the games in the top 10 and I have a feeling outside of Bayo2 I won't remember any of them this time next year.

The genre classifications are a mess every year and there's no easy remedy.

OlliOlli in sports, Garden Warfare under strategy instead of shooter, Banished, Goat Simulator and Steel Diver being put in the same genre. (
KuGsj.gif
) FRACT OSC has pretty much nothing to do with the genre we've come to call "rhythm game", maybe something like music game would be a better genre descriptor there etc etc

A good list. Glad Nintendo cleaned up given the overall quality of the software they put out this year. Glad all the big f ups stayed out of the top ten.

I hope the voting thread gets a sticky next year so we can get higher participation.

We got over 1000 voters, more than good enough to conduct a survey into what Gaf thinks is the GOTY with reliable results.

Definitely a weak year. Though in my case it's "aside from Dark Souls 2" and I didn't play everything in the top 10.

This was a weird year for me in terms of voting. Not having a PS4 yet basically meant I missed out on a bunch of games I would have probably voted for (Wolfenstein, Alien: Isolation, Infamous, Evil Within, and Dragon Age are all on my to-get list once I get a PS4.). That being said, my top 5 games of the year all made the top 10 which means buying a Wii U this year was the right call. I wasn't surprised at all to see Bayonetta 2 top this year's list. It seemed to be #1 the most frequently in the voting thread. Still haven't picked it up due to wishing for a possible sale, but who am I kidding, it's Nintendo it won't ever drop.

It's also interesting that most of the second half of my top 10 I filled with games I thought were "okay" and that was reflected in where they showed up in the standings. What I was most surprised by is how few votes Borderlands got. I thought it was a more popular franchise and the game was fairly neat. I guess being last-gen only actually hurt it?

Wow so much salt. Sorry but critics agree too. NeoGAF Top 3 is also some of the best reviewed game in the industry this year.

firstly good work everyone, that's a nice diverse list

how gaf likes my GOTY list.
1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - #1 PSP game, #54 PC game, #17 on rereleases list, not eligible for main GOTY lists. I honestly hoped it to be much higher on the PC list... like in top 20 at least and in top 5 of rereleases also.
2. The Room - #104 PC game, #40 on rereleases GOTY, again not eligible for main GOTY lists.
3. Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - #87, #2 on PS3 GOTY list.
4. LYNE - #205
5. One Finger Death Punch - #173, #9 on fighting GOTY list.
6. Banished - #86, simulation GOTY
7. Divinity: Original Sin - #14, PC GOTY as I thought, #4 RPG GOTY
8. Hexcells Infinite - #90, #7 Puzzle GOTY
9. Final Fantasy X-2 HD - #54 rereleases GOTY
10. Hatoful Boyfriend - nobody else voted for it but me... why?

Considering my list lacking mainstream titles, I didn't expected much of affinity, but I still got some, these people have a good taste and I know most ;)

hi 28 Posts Later and Coxy
FUCK

I forgot about hatoful boyfriend. That would have been up there.

Excellent work, dynamic duo, and thanks!

My call of the tally having a gentler stope was true! We're in a great gaming generation here, I can seeeeeeeeeeeeee it.

My #8 pick dropped Evil Within out of a tie for #17. :O

Dragon Grandpa and the Smash Bros having multiple high-quality entries this year split their votes.

It's still really, really wierd how 2014's votes and points are LOWER than 2011, despite tons more members. Huh.

Mine -> GAFs

#1 -> #57

#2 -> #14

#3 -> #36

#4 -> #204

#5 -> #187

#6 -> #93

#7 -> #167

#8 -> #17

#9 -> #5

And called the wierd spread, too. It's getting to be a thing, but that gentle curve of above has something to do with this, so it's not as extreme as it was in years past.

Affinity:

This turned out higher than expected on the top end! That Divinity/Grimrock/Souls 2 trio, I guess.

1. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC] Dragon Age: Inquisition (RPG) = 9 points
2. [NWU][3DS][PC] Shovel Knight (Platform) = 8 points
3. [XB1] Sunset Overdrive (Shooter) = 7 points
4. [PC][IOS][AND] Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall (RPG) = 6 points
5. [PC][IOS][AND] Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (Strategy) = 6 points
6. [PC] Might & Magic X: Legacy (RPG) = 5 points
7. [PC] Civilization: Beyond Earth (Strategy) = 5 points
8. [360][XB1][PC] Titanfall (FPS) = 4 points, 2 honorable mentions
9. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC] Alien: Isolation (Horror) = 4 points
10. [PC] The Talos Principle (Puzzle) = 4 points

1. I don't give EA money, but this may be worth Netflixing or buying used.

2. Wishlisted. Looks fun as hell.

3. Don't have a One.

4. I don't have much affinity for the Shadowrun lore, really. No spark.

5. Good to see games like this and Overwatch showing that Blizz has stopped their degeneration into cringe-inducing parody, but no thanks.

6. Once Ubi drops that Uplay, I buy that day. I won't until it is, though.

7. I have huge respect for Sid & company, but maybe someday, after some time and tweaks.

8. Terrible at FPS

9. Not a fan of teleporting enemies nor horror games.

10. Looks OK. Maybe.

Great list, GAF. Nintendo really cleaned house this year, it's much deserved recognition.

9 of my Top 10 made the Top 18 (and my #10, Captain Toad, won best puzzler!) so there's not much about the list that I can complain about.

Thanks timetokill and Cheesemeister, great work as always!

Thanks for the work timetokill, you did great once again.

I'm really shocked that Nintendo cleaned house like that. I would have put good money on Dragon Age Inquisition finishing 2nd behind Bayonetta 2.

I guess it's time I picked up a Wii U!

Again, how is Smash an exclusive despite being on two separate platforms while Horizon 2 isn't?

Edit: Pinball FX2 appears on all microsoft platforms. This also contradicts why Horizon 2 does not show

Smash Wii U and Smash 3DS are distinct games designed for their respective platforms. There are features unique to each version - not just stages, but design decisions to maximize playability on each platform.

This is probably the reason they're counted separately in the tally, which is therefore why they count as exclusives.
